4.0 excellent | happyg0lucky | December 9th 06 | Massive Attack meets futuristic Deftones. This is the album I thought I would listen to in high school year 2100. Trutfully this album's first half owns the second half with the best of the bunch (Capricorn, Edge Of The Earth, Buddha For Mary). Catchy melodies, spacey music, Chino Moreno esque vocals, futuristic distortion. These are the things this album did excellently and way way better than A Beautiful Lie which is IMO a considerably worse release. Jared Leto was on the right track with this one. If only his future releases will expand on the unique sound presented here.

3.5 great | AtavanHalen | June 15th 11 | Let me tell you a story, boys and girls, about a time when Jared Leto wasn't content on being the most intolerable rockstar douchebag this side of Bono. He actually had an idea on how to make some pretty listenable space rock. Still amazingly pretentious dickwad, but you'll be damned if Capricorn, Echelon and Buddha for Mary aren't freaking awesome tunes. Time flies, huh. Wonder what his pink mohawk is up to these days...

4.0 excellent | AlexTM510 | December 2nd 08 | In this decade full of half *** alternative metal. 30 Seconds To Mars debut album sticks out above the mediocre with oddball spaced out yet extremely solid prog metal. Drummer Shannon Leto (who records everything organically) plays in experimental way and keeps the beats pulsating and interesting at the same time. In addition Jared's power chords riffage mangage to sound extremly innovative with using weird chord fills in songs such as the beginning of "Oblivion" and "End of The Beginning." which sound oddly fresh. Many of the leads part sound very dynamic and at times downright beautiful in all of the songs. Jared's voice in addition fits the band really well bending and showing perfect expression with each of the songs. The lyrics are downright weird which builds in a weird concept of space/planet Earth/Aliens? etc. but it sits on top of the explosive sound in a very unique way. There will be those who listen to this and find this cheesy and very overindulgent although you can't deny the talent this band has displayed with it's writing skills on this superb debut.

4.0 excellent | Shinde | January 2nd 08 | Very different form of music than was mainly heard on the Radio in 2002. 30STM's Self tiled album is still their best album to date. A good mix of energy and calm with the songs and there is a good creation of this eerie feeling through the song.
One thing this album lacks that I believe would have made it better would have been some more advanced musical techniques. For goodness sakes their drummer is a monster (and I mean that in a John Bonham sort of way) yet we don't hear any Major drumming ability. Hope fully their 3rd album will have a better sound than A Beautiful Lie.

0.0 | altertide0 | June 19th 15 | Before the group turned into a piece of teenage wildlife, Thirty Seconds to Mars's music was actually a moderately ambitious blend of alternative and space rock and neo-progressive metal (the spiritual "Buddha for Mary", the twisted "Echelon", the catchy, rhythmically broken "Oblivion" and the epic "93 Million Miles").

3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | May 22nd 15 | The realm of space rock isn't exactly a vast one, though bands sometimes dabble in its otherworldly features. 30 Seconds To Mars craft a decent slab of hard rock made over with a space rock finish. Jared Leto and brother Shannon Leto are a force on the vocals and drums respectively, though it is Jared who really runs the show. Even from the opening lines of "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)", you know he is much more than just an actor. Spacey atmosphere makes the anthemic "Edge Of The Earth" can't-miss material, and the furious "Buddha For Mary" also makes its mark as one of the best on the record. The album does suffer in that much of the material, while not necessarily bad, seems like it's been done before. It's a classic case of a band having some ambition, but not enough to take their work to the next level. That being said, it's still a solid release, and shows that the band had some good ideas in their early days.

3.0 good | happyfunball | October 30th 12 | Jared Leto makes little girls ginies tickle and occasionally strikes gold on 30STM's debut album. The space rock found here has it's moments, but is otherwise buried in a sea of forced melancholy and electronic overdubs.

2.5 average | IAmKickass | November 24th 11 | As long as 30 Seconds to Mars has been doing their thing, it came as a surprise to me that I never really had an honest rating for any of their albums. I tend to think of the band positively and admire their creative tendencies, but never found their albums to be getting as much play as they should be so to speak. So grabbing myself their self-titled album and sitting down wasn't a hard thing to do, it was the second play through when the difficulty kicked in. There is an undeniable entertainment atmosphere here, but it's what the band does with it that made it so easy to turn away from. All the sounds and style can't cover up a run-of-the-mill rock music sound, barely ever was I pulled into a song enough to fully enjoy what it could be. Jared Leto being the main draw here with his fantastic vocal range, but he just can't cover up the more generic than interesting song structure and lack of real hooks.

3.0 good | LepreCon | January 13th 11 | 30STM's debut sees them take the listener on a bizarre, pretentious and unfocused journey through the pseudo-philosophical ramblings of their actor-cum-have-a-go- frontman. Spacey alternative metal is the name of the game here, with several references to popular sci-fi and Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War' scattered throughout. The heavy alternative vibe is what carries these shaky ideas more than the band's average skills as musicians and Jared Leto's forced vocal range, but it remains an interesting listen but hardly one that warrants a lot of time when so many bands do it better. That is to say that the band certainly like to wear their influences on their sleeves more so than taking the tried and tested ideas of alternative and heavy rock and making them their own. Somebody certainly should have told Jared Leto that chucking Metallica, Tool and Radiohead in a melting pot together doesn't produce as refined a work as he would like to believe.
