Gucci actin' like a rapstar, and it mostly works when he's accompanied by other rapstars - all the feats are straight-up fire. Fortunately, no tune here is a dud - few are bangers tho -, which makes for a consistent record.

Dude's flows are middling, tired, permanently slow-to-mid-paced; not to mention he's barely likable as a person to boot -- but with Zaytoven+Mike Will Made It commanding a bulk of the beats and a steadfast sense of artistic solidity throughout, he ain't quite a schlockmeister. His clarity is refreshing, his hooks catchy and understated, and by the near-end when he's claiming "all-a these rappers" as his offspring it's not hard to concur that he's been an impactful fellow in hip-hop's trajectory. Plus there's something to be said about a guy who spits "fuck the feds, fuck the cops, fuck the DEA" on record hours after being released from prison early, or can promptly call upon Kanye to help compare his cash-stuffed pockets to a "pussy print" and have it come off no-nonsense momentous. Noteworthiest moments occur after the guests depart, however: the so-cocky-it's-funny "Gucci Please", the nightmarish jail-cell fx and back-turning mama of "1st Day Out tha Feds", the teasingly wealthy "At Least a M", the one where he reminisces about the day he got robbed but never quite reminisces about the day he got robbed, etc.

Honestly, it's good to have Gucci back. Understandably, as Everybody Looking is his first release since being freed from prison, there is an enormous amount of hype surrounding it. That said, it feels more like a compilation of material he'd been working on over the last few years than a full-fledged, completely brand new project. That doesn't mean that songs like "No Sleep" and "1st Day Out Tha Feds" aren't excellent, but it does mean that some of the songs here aren't as up to par as one would've assumed. To be sure, this is a solid trap record, and there are flashes of brilliance that remind one of some good years of Gucci Mane's discography, but that's part of the problem. Gucci certainly isn't the artist he was stylistically years ago, and with him sounding a bit rusty coming out of prison, the allusions to his past and his massive influence come across as mere celebratory and reminiscent fare. Not bad, but those years have passed him. That's why the next thing he drops, when he faces the artist he is today, will be better.
