A perfect complement to 2003's Everything Goes Numb, Somewhere in the Between is one hell of a record. Everything you'd expect to find on a Streetlight Manifesto album, from frontman Tomas Kalnoky's anthemic lyrical essays and lightning-fast chord progressions, to a tight rhythm section, to a sensational brass and woodwind section (that far and away trumps the work heard on the group's debut), is all here. From the first minute of opener "We Will Fall Together," listeners become instantly aware of how killer the quartet of Mike Brown (alto and baritone sax), Jim Conti (alto and tenor sax), Mike Soprano (trombone), and Matt Stewart (trumpet) are on this album. Further, Kalnoky returns true to form with his legendary dissertations-for-lyrics style of writing, and his witty lyricism and palpable charisma provide for an enthralling listen. Another final strength of this album lies within its accessibility: Streetlight are typically known as a good introductory band to [third-wave] ska, and a first-time listener or a lifelong Streetlight fan could pick this up and get more than just something out of this record. All told, expect a huge debate amongst fans as to which album is better... that is, until they release a third album of original material.

Streetlight Manifesto immediately lose the potency they realized on their debut album, but at least create quite the solid follow-up with Somewhere in the Between. Also, "The Blonde Lead the Blind" is possibly the greatest song they've ever written. (and no, I'm not just saying this because it came out of the Everything Goes Numb recording sessions)

I could never say that Streetlight's sophomore effort is anything less than great. On the contrary, it's about as good a follow-up to Everything Goes Numb as anyone could reasonably have hoped for. The horn lines are more intricate and majestic than ever, and energy levels remain near-solar. It's just that the whole album seems so...unnecessary. Everything Goes Numb thoroughly overshadows it and makes it redundant. It's not that SITB sounds just the same as Everything Goes Numb, but on some vague subliminal level it doesn't have anything new to offer that EGN didn't already give us with more force and pathos.

Easily the most infectiously catchy album I've listened to. It's almost a shame, as everytime I listen to it, I start singing it everywhere. A mute person couldn't listen to this album without humming it. So fun.

WOW what an album, these guys are really talented. I only knew about these guys actually though this website and so went out the next day and bought this album and have loved it since. Watch Streetlight Manifesto in Brisbane, Australia when they were the backup for Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, and they were the best band of the night. You Guys Rock!!

In this day and age for ska bands it is hard to have a follow up album that is on the same level as or out does their old material. In Streetlight's case "Somewhere in the Between" blew my mind when I first heard it, the mixture of the up-beat melody and the intense horn montage really makes this album unique while taking from "Keasbey Nights" as well as "Everything Goes Numb."

When a band debut's with an album as good as Everything Went Numb, they are usually haunted by it's success, forever being compared to "their old stuff." A lot of people were worried after a pretty disappointed re-release of Catch 22's Keasbey Nights, but Streetlight bounced back hard with this new release. This album is pretty typical Streetlight Manifesto: catchy tunes, anthemic lyrics, and impressive musicianship. Rather than duplicating the sound of Everything Went Numb though, Somewhere In Between has it's own original sound. Though still focusing on themes of betrayal, frustrated rebellion, and tough times, the album generally has a much more hopeful outlook compared to some pretty bleak lyrics in Everything Went Numb. While I feel that none of the songs on this album can't compare to older songs like Point/Counterpoint, there isn't a bad track on this album.
