Dear Lord man. This album has one of the best three track spans of all time (Blanket and Crib, War Criminal Rises and Speaks, The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion). The climax in War Criminal will bring you to tears.
Will Sheff is a god. Not a song that isn't amazing on this album. Lyrically it is spectacular. There isn't much to say about it that hasn't already been said. It's just such a goddamn good album. Not a thing I'd change about it. I guess that would make it perfect.
Lyrics really can make or break an album--luckily this one stood up to the tests. With classics like "The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion" and "Maine Island Lovers" providing the soft-spoken yet hard-hitting power, it is hard to imagine this album being anything less than extraordinary. One of my favorites of all time.
there are few albums out there that posses this much introspection and this much lyrical accesibility provided by one of the greatest lyricists of all time william Sheff. This album stands out as okkervil rivers masterpiece backed by songs like "The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Coversion" and "The War Criminal Rises and Speaks" the word epic is the only way to describe it.
