A solid slab of Brutal Death Metal. Suffocation?s last release before splitting, their 1998 EP shows a quite different side of the band. They strip all the technicality they pioneered Tech-Death with, and instead perform a slaughter of brutal riffs. Not bad, but doesn?t come close to their earlier work.

Before their unfortunate break-up, pretty much everything Suffocation had put to their name was undeniably seminal death metal, sparking a few subgenres and creating a trio of death metal classics. Despise The Sun, while nowhere near the quality of their first three full-lengths, is a condensed version of everything that made Suffcatiom great: sickening riffs, rolling and blasting drums, spidery bass, and beastly vocals. The songs here are all very good, lasting about three minutes in a sustained blast of energy. No song reaches the highs of their previous efforts, but all of the tracks are well above-average death metal. If you want a sample of what one of the greatest bands in metal has to offer, you can't go wrong with this EP.
