This is easily the most "flawless" death metal record out there. The fiery riffs that retain
the instability that characterizes an open flame; the destructive drumming that pummels you
further into submission; the potent molten production the emphasizes every point this album
tries to make; and the vocals that sound like they come straight out of the pit, distorted
through the fires of hell. It's all so damn fitting and it makes this one of the most
exhilarating and cohesive death metal experiences ever. Other "classic" death metal records
have moments that let you come down (or rise up, rather) as they cannot manage the intensity
for the full duration of the album. Close to the World Below, however, continues to rape
you, your family, your dog, possibly your cats, and every significant other and child you
are to ever have for a full 42 minutes...and you'll probably enjoy it.

There are some metal releases that I enjoy quite a bit, but I think I?m more of a melodic metal type of guy than a death metal one. These guys must kill live, cause they destroy every instrument, but the album is mixed in a way that it just feels overwhelming, instead of impressive. The drums sound really thin, and those vocals, I?m really not a fan. The lyrics are also the cheesiest, most metal thing I?ve ever seen. But the production sounds just so inexistant, the loudest thing is the vocals, which doesn?t help its monotone and boring nature, and the drums and the not oversatured guitars are the lowest here, which makes really underwhelming, when I think it should be the most important thing of the record.

Top tier dissodeath, but here's the thing: it's quite a lot to take in. Borderline sensory overload at times. I'd prefer a bit more variety and I don't think I'll ever revisit this, but for what it is, it's one of the best in its class.

Almost as evil and chaotic as The Work That Transforms God, this puts me in a mood like very little else - emotive desolation, destruction and utter terror of hell. As a bonus its got good little fairytale believing choir boys like AngryNeighbour upset.

This is quite frankly one of the most brutal, disturbing, and terrifying metal records I own - granted, I don't listen to much death metal, but I chiefly love this album in particular because it is so evil and twisted. The best part about this beast is that the music is properly technical and it doesn't just endlessly spew out wank and nonsense like a lot of "technical death metal" bands tend to do. Oddly, there is something so emotionally destructive about this album that I can't quite put a finger on - just listen to 'Father You're Not a Father' or the bridge to 'Lost Passion' to find out more.

79/100. I sort of vacillated on this one--- while I loved the clean production and fiery riffs, I felt at times that a lot of songs on this blended together. There were certainly a lot of positives on this album: the vocals were horrifyingly demonic, the lyrics were terrifying, the drums were spastic, and the atmosphere was absolutely hellish. However much I enjoyed this though, I don't know that I see the masterpiece that so many others so clearly do. I'll keep this one in rotation for a while.

"Close to a World Below" is a very brutal work that needs a lot of debate. I see Immolation as a very consecrated band, but it had their most respected lightning flash in other works. "Close to a World Below" shows the band's most satanic and brutal stage, from its sonic weight, lyrics and cover art that must have frightened many parents at the time of its release. An eternal milestone in the Death Metal genre, and a lesson in how to perform perfectly in a style that was in his best decade.

A MASTERPIECE OF ATMOSPHERIC BRUTAL DEATH METAL! Perfect from start to end, this album is an experience with great vocals that are like coming straight from the hell and the guitar riffs that make you feel Satan moves around you throught the whole album. All the songs are 5/5s, but my favorite song is definitely "Father, you're not a father", one of the best death metal songs ever written. Other favorites are "Furthest from the truth", "Unpardonable sin", "Lost passion" and of course the title track! This album is 42 minutes to hell! BRUTAL DEATH CLASSIC!!!
