After the first listening of this album, I was disapointed cause I was awaiting something as cold and dark as Devoid. But after some listening, I opened my mind to something of different and I found out there was alot of tragedies here. How can't we feel all the despair, the pain and the pride through their sounds and lyrics ?
I decided to get this after the 2003`s Forget me not. The Diarist is a concept album dealing with the Leningrad siege, an event in WWII during which the city of Leningrad (St Petersburg) was blockaded from 1941 to 1944. The record uses the perspective of a woman who writes on her diary a day-by-day account of life in the bombed, isolated city whose inhabitants die of cold and starve, and the Red Army soldiers, young and frightened, carry on a desperate resistance against the German enemy. it is to say that, actually, there is no political theme in The Diarist. The focus here by the band is on suffering, fear, hope and desperation, which fits like a glove.... a must hear for all prog/ melo death/ metal fans.
