Devourment is one of the pioneers of "slamming death metal" now im not saying they were necessarily the first, just maybe the first to do it with such style and musicianship. Devourment definately isnt for everyone, well, its not for you if you hate death metal or if "insane gutturals followed with powerful slamming guitar and some masterful drumming" just isnt your thing.

This is pretty much the perfect slam metal album. If you like slam, you should like this. If you hate slam, you still might somewhat dig this because it's just that good, but that could never be guaranteed.

Probably the best "slamming death metal" considering 90% of the genre is bands attempting to emulate this and failing

Sometimes I doubt my rationality when I either give an album a 5 or a 1. Both of these numbers are extremes, and it's hard to rationalize extremism. This album, however, leaves little doubt. I'm not sure if I've ever heard a worse album. Or, for that matter, a more offensive to the death metal genre. If the core of death metal could represent a fetus (to draw some similarities to the lyrical concept), Devourment "stillborned" it, stuck a hand in it and used it as a sock puppet. Every second of this record is nothing but notes that are massively centered in the first fret of the C string (or whatever their tuning is). The drumming is very sloppy, and the vocals are holding a contest with the guitars who can more monotone. No biased factors other than my sanity here, this is truly a horrible, horrible album.

debating between 2 and 1.5. the album is for the most part a bunch of guys trying to play the same tiny section of the chromatic scale in as many different ways as possible (mostly just up and down). The guitars are tuned too low to hear the notes played in the faster passages, but I can only assume they're equally unimaginative. As well as boring note choice, the rhythms in the slams are made as boring as possible (literally just quarter notes played one after the other, maybe 2 eighth notes if you are lucky). It's redeemed by a couple of things such as the drumming, the vocals and the overall gorefest aesthetic. The lyrics make the album mildly entertaining. i don't know how people rated this with 4's and 4.5's when it's just soo f*cking boring.

Borderline unlistenable. Vocals are alright for the most part, but the songwriting on this record has got to be the one of the most monotone I've come across. It just keeps chugging on and on, almost like on an attempt to drive the listener nuts. However, the song "Choking On Bile" is decent and keeps this from getting the minimal score. Avoid this as if it were a plague.
