Seriously a masterpiece and undoubtly Amorphis best album followed by Tales from a Thousand Lakes. All tracks are fantastic and has an overall great variety. It's just so beautiful and not to many albums have achieved this ceratin feeling.

The best word to describe this album; lackluster. It is not so much that the band cannot play their instruments, it is more that their songwriting is trite and painfully dull. The hooks and rhythms are predictable, never rising up to catch the listener, only wallowing in their own melodrama. Tomi Jousten is perhaps the sole grace of Amorphis but even he can't save this album from its greatest flaw; it lacks a genuine, captivating atmosphere. The contrived nature of the instrumentation makes the album's melodrama feel forced, not sweeping and powerful. For an album of this genre, the power of the atmosphere is crucial so having none renders this album inert and thus a nearly complete failure.

This album is filled with so much perfection it's hard to know where to start... The guys from Amoprhis once again showcase their stunning musical skills creating an imersive universe of majestic and powerful metal. Joutsen harsh and clean vocals are top-notch, Etelavuori leads the rythm of the whole band with godlike skills; but Koivusaari and Holopainen are not to be overlooked. Amorphis lives up to its name by not letting you pinpoint the genre they're playing. Call it Death Metal, call it doom, call it progressive if you will. I call it: Classic.

Now I'm sure everything positive about this album that can be said has been said, and let me say I totally agree with all the immense praise this gets. From every song being excellent to the vocals which are literally to die for (they used 5, yes 5, backing vocalists for this), this album is just perfect in every way. Okay, there are small gripes like 'Enigma' killing the Metal feel of the album, 'I Of Crimson Blood' having a dragged out intro (at that point) and 'The White Swan' having a weaker chorus than all the other tracks, but those do not hold this back from perfection. I rarely give the 'Classic' rating, but this deserves it 100%.

While it could be considered a little more accessible compared to earlier efforts, Silent Waters still has enough depth to compel over a period of time. The vocals are faultless, production good and the infectious melodies prove just as addictive as the aggressive highs. As a bonus, there isn't a bad song present either. A remarkable album that was understandably one of the highlights of 2007.
