This one is special, strictly because I don't even view this as an album, really: Person Pitch is a mood, a feeling, one that I wish I could feel 24/7. But since life is life, and feeling this way all the time is impossible, I'm thankful that for roughly forty-five minutes I can at least escape the dirge, and in briefly escaping it, hope.

Person Pitch is a very Brian Wilson/Beach Boys influenced outing for the famed Panda Bear (Noah Lennox). Fans of Bear's other group Animal Collective (especially Feels) should be right at home with this disc, as all 7 tracks features the lush production and trippy effects that are so prominent in much of the Collective's work. One word to describe the sound of Person Pitch? Perhaps watery, but maybe tribal, or even poppy, because, at bare bones Person Pitch is just a collection of well written pop songs. From the jarring jungle beats of Good Girl/Carrots to the choruses of Bro's (as sweeping as they are sad) to the reflective album closer Ponytail, every thing about Person Pitch just works.

A messy, sprawling album, even for an Animal Collective related effort! But what makes it a redeeming and interesting album is the production, which morphs Panda Bear's Brian Wilsonized happy-go-lucky harmonic vocals into part of the wild soundscapes that are created on this album. The atmosphere encompasses every aspect of the music into one psychedelic chain of sound, whether it'd be the jingly percussion, jangly guitars, or jumbled sound effects, sounding like the album is being tumbled through a washing machine. The Can-like meandering of Person Pitch aside, most of the songs themselves are weak, and half-baked, seeming like Panda Bear had to rely too much on making the lyrics incomprehensible and magic mushroom trip recreation to keep the album together. That being said, if I were to take a load of mind boggling drugs, I'd certainly agree with everyone else and say this is one of 2007's best. Until then, I'll stick to my other Animal Collective albums.

Unfortunately when it comes to this album I have to agree both with the fanboys and the critics. Person Pitch is full of incredibly warm, Beach Boys inspired sounds that are incredibly pleasant on the ears and psychedelic. Sometimes, however, the songs also seem to to just "float around" for a while and then fizz out. Very little that actually grips and enthralls the listener ever takes place (with the clear exception of the opening track). So I feel a little torn between Panda Bear's brilliant tendencies and his tendencies to just make weird sounding noises and repeat them over and over again...

Completely overrated. I think this is some of the worst material of the year. The only thing I give props to him for is his talent to create this type of music. But it's way too drawn out, and boring, and really spacious (spacey?) It's just bad, and totally not my cup of tea.
