This is a great album, the songs are arranged really well and get better after each listen. Mainly I love the contrasts; the album is subtle yet progressive, cold yet emotional, complex yet melodic. Great vocals, too.
The arrangements and overall soundscape are sometimes so impressive (just listen to "Medicine Brush") that you'll have a hard time figuring out why it isn't better, the actual result being often on the edge of the lackluster and, well, boring side, with poppy songs that aren't catchy and flat ambient constructions. Still, it does sound great.
Like many of these recent types of albums, the best thing I can say about Chiaroscuro is that it's inoffensive. At best, it's atmospheric and diverse (for the territory), most of the time, it's just boring. r
