Bleak even by Xiu Xiu standards. Jamie Stewart's dreary, unnerving confessionals and despair-drenched songs have been a staple of the band since day one, and, 'Angel Guts,' at first seems to inconspicuously fit nicely into the dark Xiu Xiu catalog, but, repeated listens reveal a harrowing desperation that creates an eerie, heavy, and wholly uncomfortable atmosphere. Along with, 'Knife Play,' and 'Air Force,' this is the band's best work, and also their most disheartening and beautiful!

An experimental album with a few decent tracks, and a few others where the vocals don't seem to mix.

The music paints vivid images, but the hushed, breathy vocals make everything sound like a nightmare trip to the dentist where a frenzied harrasser half-whispers half-yodels bizarre things in your ear. It's too bad, but I can't get past it. r

Xiu Xiu releases their darkest and most experimental album to date.

I was taken to a very dark place. I never imagined music could sound so bleak and terrifying without being 'metal'. I'm having a harder time justifying not giving this a perfect score.
