Revolutionary, offensive, unapologetic, and truthful, Straight Outta Compton is the public and social representation NWA so vividly paints for America. With misogynist and violent lyrics about ghetto life, NWA narrates the tales of drug dealers, gang members, and suppressed people alike. They hate police, they hate women, and if you can't get over that, they hate you too. In terms of MCing style, they are distinguishable and contrast quite well, and while the beats had not become Dr. Dre's brand of patented G-funk, they are fairly jazzy and old school and - either way - are great. 4.4/5

Making rap of this quality seems to have become a long lost art. Music about real issues and the hardships of life with catchy beats and lyrics.
Even if you hate the scum on the radio these days that people dare to call "rap", check NWA out, you will be pleasently suprised of the quality of Old School rap.

Never been a fan of any entity getting popular solely on shock value. The band is full of energy with some crafty word play here and there, but this album is mostly full of undeveloped 80s hip-hop. But of course, notable pioneers leading on to the perfection of hip-hop soon to come in the early 90s.

When it comes to hip-hop as an image, I don't know if there was ever a more influential album than this one. The style of hip-hop displayed here would come to be known as "gangsta rap", and that alone is enough to cement this record's impeccable status, but the true reach of the album goes much further than that. In one fell swoop, hip-hop became violent, unapologetic, uncensored, loud, and threatening. Add that to the already socially and politically conscious nature of the genre even then, and you have a recipe for the then-future of hip-hop to create some of the most amazing music around. It started here, though, with classic cuts like the title-track, "F*ck The Police", "Gangsta Gangsta", and "Express Yourself". And while in a vacuum the album might sound a bit dated and have a slip-up near the end of the record, it's impossible to deny the influence of it. Hip-hop simply wouldn't be the same without it.

Every time I listen to this album, it hurts to think how good it could have been. "Straight Outta Compton", "Fuck Tha Police", "Gangsta Gangsta", "Parental Discretion Iz Advised" and "Express Yourself" are all stunningly good songs, and if they could have produced 5 or 6 more tracks anywhere near as good as these then NWA would have easily made one of the best Hip-Hop albums ever. Straight Outta Compton still recieves that accolade in many places, and while it's certainly one of the most influential albums of the past 20 years, in the end it's just not consistent enough to really warrant it.

"Straight Outta Compton" is one of the 4 or 5 best rap songs I've ever heard, "Fuck Tha Police" is one of the 4 or 5 most intense rap songs I've ever heard and NWA's Straight Outta Compton, other than "Express Yourself," is one of the 4 or 5 best rap albums I've ever heard. I love Ice Cube and when E was spitting rhymes Cube wrote for him, those two were unstoppable. Oh, and then there's that Dr. Dre guy ...
