The Low End Theory is the epitome of a “grower.” Not only does the album get better to go on, but it takes more than one listen to fully appreciate. The beats are pretty good, with jazzy undertones, prominent bass, and an upbeat New York feel. The MCing is an easy A-minus with contrast amongst the group members despite each having considerable skill, and the lyrics are an easy B-plus, could probably be an A if they dropped the good punchlines they’re capable of, but the storytelling is very good. The Low End Theory is a really good New York hip hop album, one of the albums that changed the way I thought about east coast hip hop. 4.1/5

Old school hip hop at its finest. The lyrics and delivery are good and the simple beats do the job. A jazzy, soulful album with heart and intelligence. A Tribe Called Excellent

A Tribe Called Quest was one of the four big native tongues hiphop-groups from the early 90s (the others being De La Soul, Black Sheep and Jungle Brothers). Although their first album is very enjoyable, it had it's flaws. ATCQ made up for that completely on this album. This album has everything you'd expect from an early 90s hiphop-album; grooving basslines and big sounding drum breaks spiced up with some jazzy samples. Lyrically this album is great, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg serve as each other's yin and yang, although Tip sometimes outshines Phife. The real star of the album however is Busta Rhymes with his killer verse on Scenario. A definitive hiphop-classic.

What De La Soul started, A Tribe Called Quest perfected. Because of albums like this it pays to keep an open mind. Much like rock, hip-hop over the past decade (or at least its public face) has been largely a non-stop parade of mediocrity, but A Tribe Called Quest provide convicing proof of just how much potential the genre actually has. Instead of focusing too much on establishing a threatening image or blasting the listener's eardrums with mindless and overbearing basslines, Tribe allied the seemingly contradictory poles of jazz and rap with more musicality and intelligence than anyone would have a right to expect. The uber-smooth Q-Tip and Phife spit out witticisms and allusions with a flow that puts the likes of Lil' Jon and Ja Rule to shame. The jazzy drums and bass in the background give the music a warm and organic feel, in sharp contrast to the canned beats that predominate in hip-hop (with a few exceptions) these days. Perhaps most importantly, the fourteen songs here are all irresistibly catchy. This album isn't for rap fans, this album is for music fans.

Every track stands out as its own entity.The album has a wide variety of great jazz samples.This album is an amazing start for anyone looking for some true Hip-Hop.A Tribe Called Quest made a successful attempt to honest,and this is definitely the album that defined ATCQ and their intentions as a group.Jazz (We've Got) and Butter have the best beats that I've ever heard.The Low End Theory will be forever engrained in my mind.

This is my favorite rap album of all time. The alt-rap vibes, and heavy bass instrumentation are at their peak, along with frequently clever lyrics. Consecutive tracks "Butter" and "Verses From The Abstract" tell stories through their words, and the samples throughout the album are exquisite.
