Coming out of their element and sitting on this thing for the greater part of a decade, Pig Destroyer shows that when they are in the mood for doom they can crush it. Is it grind? No. Is it good? Very much so.

Carrying elements of doom and sludge metal, Mass & Volume doesn't have so much staying power going for it - which is a bit of a drag since it's an EP, nonetheless. "Red Tar" is as dark as it is crushing, but that's all there is to the track; the one preceding this is hardly what anybody would call 'sonically mean-spirited'.

As a stand alone piece in their discography, this is pretty great drone/doom metal ep.

The second song is slightly better than the first, but overall this album is not that good at all, especially not since we've come to expect nothing but greatness from Pig Destroyer.

An odd change for PxDx. I hope they don't continue in this direction after this experiment. "Red Tar" is great towards the end, but all of the album preceding that point is just messy, droney garbage. They could have tried a little bit harder to make it interesting.

This is not Pig Destroyer. They should really stick to the breakneck speed stuff.
