Le1f's mixtape "Dark York" is kind of like a soundtrack to one of those parties like in the movie "Midnight Cowboy" (featuring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight). An underground party in New York where all the art college graduates come to take ecstasy and psychedelics, get drugged up and have orgies. Except this time you take a little too much and you start to feel drowsy, and as you start to pass out on the couch, your friend slaps you in the face and says "dude, you can't fall asleep when Le1f is on." And suddenly you listen to the music and you hear Le1f's flamboyant voice over these dark, twisted intrumentals and, in a genre full of hetero-testosterone and homophobia, you hear a side of hip hop you thought you never would.
I hated this at first, but man those beats are crazy and he does well playing up his voice with the music. Great to see rappers who can produce as well! And even the production choices for the songs he doesn't produce are crazy too. Much love!
