  • kildare Oops, my "Debussey" message got messed up. I tried to use a "greater than" character and Sputnik didn't like it. I meant to write something like "So, Debussey rated better than Bach in your library?" Just a follow-up from a comment you made awhile back
    April 15 07:12 PM
  • kildare Debussey

  • kildare Thanks for the inquiry in my shoutout box. It was kind of final, but I run into old, disappeared users on the site and I always wonder what happened to them, so I wanted to put some...certainty out there in case I disappeared.
    April 3 05:43 PM
  • Wasn't on my release playlist, but now I ought to hear. Cheers

  • Demon of the Fall Congrats on Staff, you?re a good one. Well deserved!
    March 16 05:58 PM
  • JohnnyoftheWell Hmm if your question is inclined towards perceived ethics, I'd say you're okay, but if it's based on uncertainty that your criticism can remain unclouded, I can have a peep?
    March 15 03:24 AM
  • xxm Congratulations on Staff!

  • kildare Hey, I thanked you for all your support in the third(?) comment block from the top of my new Joplin review. Have a great winter!
    February 12 05:11 AM
  • JohnnyoftheWell Apologies for stalling - hit a bit of a slump lately. Got a few skinny writes to burn through to gather steam, will hit you up in the (hopefully) soon!!
    February 10 09:26 PM
  • JohnnyoftheWell Oooh yeah could do - not sure how balanced the dialogue would be given that my wider familiarity with Jarrett/that whole arm of jazz is probs considerably behind yours, could could still make it work ig! Alternatively, there are uh two of us and two halves of the album lol
    February 3 06:17 PM
  • JohnnyoftheWell Survivor's Suite review? Am game for a collab if we can think of a good structure
    February 3 04:44 AM
  • JohnnyoftheWell Have bloody finally gotten round to Doji Morita - your original rec was so long ago that I can't remember the specific framing (Meiko Kaji aside), but have been enjoying her debut and A Boy q a bit in the last few days. Fills a perfect middle ground between trad-leaning melodies and the trending 70s folk pop palette, great stuff
    January 25 05:55 PM
  • Elynna I gave it another spin, and I enjoyed it much more this time around. Definitely a grower
    January 24 10:32 AM
  • Elynna Yes, I?m sorry it just wasn?t for me. I remember liking how they fused their traditional and modern sound, but it was the repetitiveness I found off putting. I might give it another shot in the future, because they?re undoubtedly very talented.
    January 23 05:46 PM
  • kildare Yeah, there's no underground music on that site, so not a real alternative to Sputnik for most of the reviews we do on here. Just thought I'd mention it
    January 22 03:56 AM
  • kildare Oops, meant to put this in first. Link to one of my fairly mediocre, but fun to write articles: https://medium.com/@Lkildare/musical-tastes-collections-concerts-and-our-lives-with-the-art-of-sound-part-i-7b08b6b69074
    January 21 02:45 AM
  • kildare This year I made resolution to (1.) learn Audacity then (2.) use a copywrite-free recording of a Bruckner or Mahler or Shostakovich (their long) symphony to snip out audio bits of it ? like the beginning and end of the Recapitulation, say -- and post them as videos. I can then (3.) elaborate on the main text in the video caption. The caption tech actually seems more powerful than YouTube itself.
    January 20 11:24 PM
  • kildare I thought you might interested in the site. It would be perfect for posting your potential Webern review. First, there?s a larger Classical audience on the site, you can apply to ?magazines? with editors. Also, I like Sputnik for a few reasons, but Medium is far more powerful multi-media wise: Embedded YouTube videos, images, pretty much anything we can do on Facebook. It?s not great for underground stuff, though. But it might get more view and comments for stuff like Webern and Lainey Wilson.
    January 20 11:18 PM
  • kildare Got it, thanks! No hard feelings if I overstep and you feel the need to defend Country with a troll-like ferocity. I'm sort of tough. I think.
    December 27 06:46 PM
  • kildare Unless you were planning to review it - I'll just recycle what I have somewhere else. You'd do the genre justice in a way I can't.
    December 27 05:19 PM
  • kildare Hey again, I'm tinkering with a Lainey Wilson review. Kenny Rogers: Butt Country? Garth Brooks: The epitome of butt-country? Kenny Chesney?
    December 26 09:06 PM
  • xxm Thanks.
    December 23 08:13 PM
  • xxm PS your reviews have really made my year this year. Sorry for essentially repeating myself but you?ve had one hell of a year when it comes to quality reviews and I wanted to once again thank you.
    December 15 01:09 AM
  • kildare Lol. I SUSPECTED it was butt-country! The other few on my list are probably of the same ilk. It's possible I don't have the ear for the better stuff. The music of the track is very regulation-issue; maybe I just like it because I want to see what watermelon moonshine tastes like. Thanks for checking it. My wife likes country but could care less about analysis, which I always crave
    December 14 08:15 PM
  • xxm Hey there again, just want to know how you?re doing right now. Hope you?ve had a pleasant year all things considered.
    December 12 04:45 PM
  • DoofDoof thanks for the rec, will check
    December 10 08:28 PM
  • kildare I value your opinion even if you hate it! I value your opinion no matter what genre we're talking about, but my emotional investment in Country is not very high, so in this case it's purely out of curiosity
    December 6 04:57 PM
  • kildare Hey, so I heard a Country song over Thanksgiving that really clicked with me: Lainey Wilson's "Watermelon Moonshine." Not counting Johnney Cash, that brings my list of country songs that I "love" to around five. But maybe Lainey is part of the "rrrmusic industry" that you disparaged in your old 2013 list "In defense of country"? Anyway, adding a country song to the list is a rare occurrence for me, so I thought I'd mention it in case you were looking for a country album to review.
    December 6 02:49 AM
  • pizzamachine EZ. Pick album that you?ve been thinking about lately. OR pick an album that is something special to you. Just start writing about it. If it doesn?t turn into a full review yet don?t sweat it, write whenever you have more stuff to say

  • robertsona This is a good question. I don't have to deal with it much. Sometimes I'm just sardonic about something lame about the insulter, which probably isn't the best move. Lemme think.

    August 10 03:50 PM
  • someone I have noticed some such upheaval. They've been consistently dropping stuff like twice a month since at least 2020. I never paid much mind, considering it's all mostly just them ducking around with improv, amplifiers, instruments, etc. Hardly sth you can consider a proper studio album.

  • xxm You?re welcome.
    June 10 03:47 PM
  • xxm I?ve practically said this before but while Country Music isn?t my favorite genre (though I do enjoy some of the poppier hits from when I was younger and prior) you point out what?s great about it with verve and I love your reviews and lists on it (I don?t share your apperant dislike for Waylon Jennings but that?s neither here nor there). May 10 10:11 PM
  • kildare Thanks for alerting me this, not to mention the kind words. I always read yours, and should comment more, but I'm far more self-conscious about my comments than my reviews. Incidentally, every time I read one of your reviews I go to Spotify and see if they?ve started streaming the Takacs quartet recording you reviewed. Still not there, but it might show up on YouTube eventually.
    May 4 05:18 PM
  • robertsona I haven?t thought about that script since I wrote it in a three day burst, but I?d like to combine the dialogue I like with a plot about teaching kids in NYC maybe mixed with the love triangle thing?Ty either way!

    March 20 08:30 PM
  • Mort. the aforementioned edu entry https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/simone-weil/
    March 17 11:25 AM
  • Mort. but in general i would say that understanding the concepts of attention, void and ego hold the key to understanding weil. the very dumbed down version is our ego gets in the way of us seeing people or events how they really are (giving just attention). as the stanford edu entry puts it:the void by definition is empty (vide)?of idols, futural self-projections, consolations that compensate un-thinking, and attachments of collective and personal prestige.
    March 17 11:23 AM
  • Mort. Gravity and Grace is a very good place to start. for background reading to make it easier to understand Weil i reccomend Iris Murdoch's The Sovereignty of Good. her moral philosophy is basically Weil's but translated into a more analytic philosophy style and much more understandable. Murdoch isnt a mystic like Weil. i also reccomend any of the essays by Silvia Panizza, who translated an unfinished play of Weils with one of my lecturers, Philip Wilson

  • pizzamachine Lots of great stuff this year :], how goes the writing?
    February 25 01:59 PM
  • Sunnyvale It's a great writeup, I just a made a few minor edits for flow and then also (for formatting) made it so 12 is in italics. It's the typical standard on Sput to make album titles italics, which you can do by typing [/i]Album Title[/i]. Thanks!
    February 13 03:57 PM

    September 3 02:16 PM
  • Mort. lol yeah plato is a strange one because he can be extremely straightforward and down to earth, the best introduction to philosophy you could ask for (literally just some guy going 'what is x concept?/what does x mean?) and on the other hand can be incredibly esoteric and mystical. I havent got round to Parmenides yet but if it involves a discussion of Parmenides' philosophy im not surprised. read a book on the pre-socratics a while ago and it was incredibly difficult.
    August 25 09:26 PM
  • Mort. if you havent read any simone weil it sounds like you would find her interesting tho. she was continental and her philosophy/take on mysticism is at its core ethical
    August 25 07:33 PM
  • Mort. 'essay on Heidegger's Philosophy of technology' god kudos to you for attempting that, i find heidigger (and a lot of contintental philosophy) really difficult to understand. all ive read is a little bits and pieces of most continental authors, its a massive gaping hole in my reading(along with eastern philosophy). pretty sure ive read heidigger on technology and understood probably 10% of it lol. Im currently reading Plato's entire corpus which has been slow going but very satisfying.
    August 25 07:31 PM
  • Mort. was getting my masters a couple of years ago with plans to go onto a phd but covid forced the course online and i was struggling with mental health issues/family stuff so my marks were dropping pretty drastically. i plan on going back and getting my masters at some point in the future. You have a philosophy background or just an interest of yours?
    August 25 02:18 PM
  • Mort. mainly analytic philosophy with a pretty heavy focus on language, logic and ethics. Specific philosophers-wise I studied a lot of Wittgenstein, Simone Weil and Iris Murdoch. im also decently well read in Plato. the uni i went to specialised in wittgenstein studies. also took some one off modules on other areas of philosophy such as environmental philosophy, a module on Nietzsche, philosophy of religion.

  • JohnnyoftheWell I moved back in April, so you're close! Miss it a whole lot though :[ And yeah - real dent for the country. Really hope this isn't turned into some twisted logic bs by gun lobbyists elsewhere ("if shootings can happen in countries with the strictest acquisition laws in the world, they can happen anywhere so what's the point" -type beat). what an awful day
    July 8 01:48 PM
  • JohnnyoftheWell yeah jfc, am still reeling from that. feels awful to put it this way, but you hear about that stuff happening in the US so often that as a non-american it's horribly easy to process it as just another headline - but in japan, it's totally unthinkable. i don't live there anymore, but i can't imagine what a shock it must be to people there. also, while i was never a fan of Abe and he q rightly got considerable flack for cronyism, he did a lot for his country and deserved a better end than that

  • Point1 I appreciate it, I'm in the Hague for the summer and spending lots of time writing REM reviews there is exactly the kind of thing i would normally do so I'm making an effort. I'll resume soon though.

  • Brostep Awesome, good to hear
    February 18 05:05 PM
  • wabbit I got spoiled. I grew up in an area of rural ontario where a lot of the Vietnam draft dodges ended up/ became hippies/ my dad befriended. So I spent a lot of my childhood hearing all of the songs being preformed by amazing musicians. I know all the songs as a result, but not the album's as much.
    February 18 03:23 AM

  • idkpokeit Yeah those Grimes and feels threads seriously make me lose faith in humanity.
    January 25 08:18 PM
  • idkpokeit Did you start the thread? Yeah I don't really know why I still browse that s***hole either haha.
    January 25 07:22 PM
  • slipnslide hey saw your electronic section list and didnt want to bump it. If you click on a section of a pie-chart itll bring the charts and related reviews for everything tagged with that genre. sites a bit disorganized but yeah, dont have to type a link in. The pop section on the top is utterly pointless and should be replaced with Electronic though.

  • Trebor. lol fair enough
    January 4 02:26 AM
  • Trebor. umm Bluebird is the best poem ever and the guitar riff is catchy damn good song

  • alachlahol if i were to pick one swedish band youre missing it would be totalitar. overall you were pretty comprehensive with your choices though so thats cool. youll need to delve into some of the eps and other releases put out by bands like dystopia, iskra, doom, stormcrow, and his hero. too good to overlook
    December 24 07:56 PM
  • alachlahol also a lot of the swedish bands like martyrdod, s***system and disfear i lost interest in a while ago. i still put them on essentials lists simply because theyre great for accessibility though their discogs get pretty weak when you run through them. id exclude stuff like teen chthulu, leper, chokehold, left for dead (more hardcore than crust) and then some of the others i just consider to be lesser crust bands like warcollapse and appalachian terror
    December 24 07:48 PM
  • alachlahol im pretty stingy with my crust taste nowadays! never was a fan of aus rotten regardless of their influence and then a lot of those bands that throw in violins and crap dont do it for me (except madame germen) so that means i wouldnt include oroku or fall of efrafa (decent band though)
    December 24 07:43 PM
  • alachlahol hmmm let me run through it and get back to you in several minutes
    December 24 06:53 PM
  • XingKing I just found out about that Holy Mountain band the other day too and was like this is not the Holy Mountain I know! THE Holy Mountain is great though, very Tragedy like.
    December 24 05:39 PM
  • Aids right on man, glad you are enjoying it. the guy who made it is my best friend in real life (I introduced him to the website) and it's been amazing to see him grow. He started making wub heavy songs that were an awkward combination of brostep/dnB and ambient, but he's found a sound completely his own with this LP (if you ask me). All we do together is chill and listen to deep dubstep so it's awesome to see him making this sort of stuff.
    December 4 04:36 AM
  • Aids yo you spelled iNTRiKeT wrong on your aoty list in the forums, it won't get counted unless you edit it. also take out the bracket bit cause that could mess with it too. haha sorry I just really want that album to make the list and you're one of only two votes for it so far.
