  • silentstar wow, thanks for that sweet rec! really liked Wanderlust - will probably check out the album sometime this week. and yeah, I totally understand - sometimes it's hard to see an album as an independent piece and rather see it as an artist's identity
    March 24 03:06 PM
  • silentstar found you through your review of A Different Kind of Fix - you should listen to BBC's latest! it's really good, although much different in sound (more electronics/synths/female vocals, less guitars/indie feel)
    March 24 01:11 PM
  • MisterTornado the nicolas theory. yesterday gravity waves gave it even more stability ~
    March 18 09:31 AM
  • MisterTornado will do, sounds interesting. ya haha, frequencies reminds me of what's happening far, far in the back of confield. anything that features artwork that looks like an electronic installation piece is a m u s t listen.
    March 18 09:19 AM
  • MisterTornado not familiar with any of danny norbury's solo work (tho i know he's in the boats), any good? oh yeah segue, pacifica's cover art alone drew me in last year (reminded me of riven), how's the here and now? haha absolutely, what are your thoughts on signum and frequencies?
    March 18 08:53 AM
  • MisterTornado okay i'm gonna listen to Not Knowing and Yesterday This Would've Meant So Much To Us ... soon
    March 18 08:28 AM
  • MisterTornado mhm, i feel you there. haha awesome, this'll work ;)
    March 6 07:13 AM
  • MisterTornado it's a cool mix of dream pop / ambient, very stranger of sorts
    March 6 05:40 AM
  • MisterTornado check out Fog Lake - Virgo Indigo, i think you'd like that
    March 6 02:08 AM
  • MisterTornado Well that's okay, I'm sure other relics brought you up well. Mhm, very groovin'
    February 21 04:33 AM
  • MisterTornado 'Last Ditch Legacy' reminding me of Blast Corps if you share those memories with me
    February 20 10:59 PM
  • MisterTornado Right, didn't actually see the cover art until last night and went "OH, well that kinda makes sense then"
    February 17 08:14 PM
  • MisterTornado Not sure what to think yet. Feel like he should have put it out on The Stranger instead...a borderline techno EP isn't what I expected at all of him. How about you?
    February 17 07:44 PM
  • Guzzo10 sent your a request friendo, I'm Joey Stillwell
    February 12 11:16 PM
  • Atari i'm sure i'll enjoy it, folk is one of my favorite genres
    February 12 12:58 PM
  • Atari I dug your review for Sun Kil Moon man. Stoked to check them out
    February 12 12:10 PM
  • thelastsignal Haha well the black metal was a little out of my comfort zone, I reviewed that for a site that I was working for beforehand. It was just something I figured that I would try out.
    February 12 08:23 AM
  • Jacquibim Thanks a lot, don't think we've ever really interacted before though
    February 12 06:41 AM
  • Guzzo10 thank you sir! Can you post a link to your profile, I'm having difficulty finding it right now haha.
    February 12 01:50 AM
  • thelastsignal Hey, I know that we have never really spoken, but I love your reviewing style. I was wondering if I could shoutbox you when I have a new review ready; I'd like to get some feedback from someone that I could learn from in terms of content and voice. I have some up already, so you can read one or two and let me know if you think that it's a worthy enough cause haha.
    February 11 11:21 PM
  • mindleviticus never change your profile picture
    February 11 08:21 PM
  • hogan900 I stopped using my Facebook like 4 years ago. I'll see if I can log on and stuff and I'll join the group if I can! Thank you.
    February 11 02:57 PM
  • ethos i love your night shift review ( :
    December 7 09:24 PM
  • AliW1993 Yeah Excavation will probably make it into my top 10 of the year. I'll listen to Ben Frost later, sounds like it could be up my street.
    November 14 02:54 PM
  • AliW1993 Have you heard The Haxan Cloak's new record. I was reading your description of Ben Frost's new one and it sounds like it's in the same bracket. Valid comparison? I'll check it out either way.
    November 14 06:22 AM
  • Eloriaz Thank you! Bookmarked. I appreciate it :)
    November 10 04:33 PM
  • clercqie "Enjoy, it's one of my favourites. " You have it as a 3, what? :p
    November 9 12:04 PM
  • GnarlyShillelagh you should review darkside ur soundoff is on pointttt
    October 8 03:38 AM
  • Hyperion1001 its up on slsk thanks though, i hope its good
    June 28 03:16 PM
  • Hyperion1001 did the new u-ziq leak yet? been looking for it for a while now
    June 28 11:57 AM
  • Rev That was referring more to how it's probably terrible haha :p. The sound is pretty derivative of my past stuff, with some new stuff thrown in, I guess
    June 19 05:49 PM
  • Rev Hey man! The bansheebeat full length drops next week and I was wondering if you'd be willing to give it a listen. It's probably not quite up your alley but I'd love to hear what you think of it
    June 19 05:27 PM
  • clercqie Idk, I was really looking forward to it, but it just seems like a recycling of LA beat ideas that others have done far better. Most of the songs don't compell all the way through their playing length either. Practically the same reason why I didn't like the Lapalux album all that much.
    June 19 10:25 AM
  • clercqie Looking forward to it! And maybe if we're talking regular pils, but the specialty beers can get you pretty baked. I'm speaking from experience. ;]
    June 19 05:03 AM
  • clercqie Ah good to hear! Yeah, Bruges is very touristy, but beautiful nontheless. Kinda like Prague actually. It's such a shame none of my friends like going out/clubbing, so tbh I haven't experienced the nightlife in Brussels yet. It really bugs me. The bars/cafés are very chill though, and the beer is nice. ;]
    June 16 11:26 AM
  • clercqie Hey man, how was your Belgian trip? Again, I'm sorry I couldn't make it, it's a shame...
    June 15 05:37 AM
  • mindleviticus Duuude gimme some more awesome IDM recs :D
    June 1 02:45 PM
  • mindleviticus And odd that you find Fullmoon to be the song that hits you every time because it's my least favorite song on the album. My favorite is Ringvanes
    May 17 11:11 PM
  • clercqie Lol no offence but I totally can understand why you hate it. Around here, that's pretty much the garbage-study for people who just want to go to college, but don't have any business there. I've nearly graduated in Physics and Astronomy. I only still need to do my Master thesis next year.
    May 7 12:31 PM
  • Rev Thanks bud, I'll hit you up for more after I get through those
    May 7 12:16 PM
  • clercqie Haha thanks. What are you studying?
    May 7 12:11 PM
  • Rev Yo jonny throw some recs my way
    May 7 11:28 AM
  • clercqie Yeah, starting from May 27. I'm terribly sorry man, I'm not trying to weasel out of it or anything. Kinda bummed about it myself... :[
    May 7 11:06 AM
  • clercqie Oh crap, I'm just kinda remembering that I have examinations coming up in June, so unfortunately I won't be available then. :-/
    May 6 12:18 PM
  • clercqie You're welcome, buddy :]
    May 6 12:10 PM
  • clercqie Lol, long away in Belgium. :p Ghent is around 35min from Brussels with the train. If you have 5 days, Antwerp is another big city that's interesting to visit (they have a zoo!). Or Liege, but that's in Wallonie, so I still have to get there myself someday.
    May 6 11:47 AM
  • clercqie And you could also come to Ghent if you have the time. It's the city were I study, so I know a lot more cool places here. ;]
    May 6 09:56 AM
  • clercqie The AB, Botanique and Handelsbeurs are to places to go for concerts of popular music. There are also a lot of bars with local bands, jazz and stuff, but I'm not all that familiar with them, sorry. The comic book museum is fun as well, and you can do the comic book walk which is a great way to explore the city centre. If you have the time, there's a cinema affiliated with the Rits, the biggest art school in Belgium, that plays nothing but old classics on the big screen.
    May 6 09:55 AM
  • clercqie Tbh, I'm not all that familiar with Brussels (shame on me, I know). The old city centre is great for a walk, and you'll get to see all the tourist stuff. Be wary of stands that sell chocolate, beer and stuff - if you want to try some, go to the supermarket and buy some Cote D'or chocolate. For beers, there are a lot of cafés in the area of the Grote Markt. Go to one in near the Galerie Royale. Some of my favorite beers are Tripel Karmeliet, Rochefort 10, La Chouffe and Gouden Carolus Tripel.
    May 6 09:52 AM
  • mindleviticus I'm gonna be listening to it for a while trying to decipher it
    May 5 09:04 PM
  • mindleviticus I don't know how hard it will hit me, so far it isn't hitting as hard as BBGT or Tryshasla but who knows? Maybe it'll hit REALLY hard hopefully. Regardless this deserves no less than a 4.5
    May 5 04:59 PM
  • mindleviticus You commented on my secede review about it and holy **** it's so ****in good

    February 24 12:53 PM
  • mindleviticus oh man congrats on contributor, electro buddy!
    February 24 10:56 AM
  • Gyromania congrats on the promotion man! your writing has progressed a lot - that burial review of yours is legendary
    February 24 05:56 AM
  • Typhoner I liked your reviews (at least, the ones I read). Keep up the good work now you're promoted!
    February 24 05:34 AM
  • Eclecticist I haven't listened to Pattern Language enough to give a thorough critique but it's hard for me to give it very much love except for the fact that it's by A.M. Architect. They dropped my favourite part about them which is love super fresh, clean electric jazz guitar licks and smooth bass. Those brought depth to The Road To The Sun and I feel like Pattern Language is hollowed out for that reason and I know that their debut would not have been nearly as good without the real guitar and bass.
    February 13 01:07 PM
  • Eclecticist Did you hear what I mean when I said that their debut is the ****ing bomb?
    February 12 08:54 PM
  • Brostep Did it, enjoy!
    January 30 02:28 PM
  • Brostep Would you still like criticism for your latest review? I've been busy lately but I may find time to give some.

    September 15 02:57 PM
  • mindleviticus Oh lol, Yeah I try to keep my classical and ambient seperate like I'll listen to Dvorak, Bach, Arvo Part, Tchaikovsky etc. and then I'll listen to Steve Roach, Mathias Grassow, Klaus Schulze, Demdike Stare etc.
    September 15 02:54 PM

    September 13 10:24 PM
  • clercqie It's rare that an ambient album can hold my interest, so thanks again for the (kind of) rec! That Loscil album is also very good. Really relaxing stuff.

    August 23 04:27 PM
  • mindleviticus Oh I see :p
    August 21 10:44 AM
  • clercqie Indeed, anything with lovely Tilda is gold (except for that Narnia flick, but let's forget about that one...). You mean the review or album? I'm still not over the fact that it's such a big letdown. Saw them live last week as well, and they were terrible. Gargh, all my favorite bands start to suck nowadays :[
    August 21 04:45 AM
  • clercqie Yeah but still... In any case, I'm glad I saw it when it was up, because the album is awesome :]
    August 21 04:05 AM

    August 9 10:16 PM
  • TheGardener Have you heard the newest album from 36? It's called Lithea; it's ambient/electronic/drone and it's one of my favourite albums of the year so far. I'd be interested to hear your opinions on it.
    August 7 09:30 PM
  • mindleviticus To be completely honest,I find with dubstep/ garage/ bass I can't really seem to get into it. For example I loved your Borealis review and I liked the songs, but I have a really hard time actually picking it up again and listening to it multiple times. Maybe I'm just crazy ;p
    August 5 05:08 PM
  • mindleviticus I feel like we're kind of balanced when you rec me new stuff and I rec you old stuff (old meaning like early 2000's late 1990's ;P)
    August 4 10:11 PM
  • mindleviticus Thanks for the recs, man. Really diggin' Eternal Sunset :)
    August 4 10:03 PM

Will look at it and give you some feedback when I get home in the morning =] Also, perhaps you can make contrib yet if you keep the reviews coming in the next couple to few weeks.
    July 17 10:30 PM

    May 25 10:41 PM
  • VlacDrac I love your lists, especially the ambient ones, they have lots of albums that i haven't heard of.
    May 25 05:32 PM
  • gosk8n Thats cool man i love art i work at a gallery do you have any other pieces
    May 24 01:05 PM
  • gosk8n Sweet profile picture where is that from?
    May 23 11:44 PM
  • Rev I've actually found it to be quite the opposite. Despite being a long time user of cannabis and hallucinogenics, I find "psy" genres (mainly the ones associated with electronic/dance music) to be extremely grating, and most of the fans are people who have no tripping experience whatsoever
    May 13 07:46 PM
  • Rev thanks. I have 76:14, Benn Jordan's stuff, and Solar Fields, will check out the rest. I actually really dislike electronic genres with the "psy" prefix, because they tend to suck and aren't actually psychedelic in the least (psytrance is the biggest offender) lol
    May 13 02:19 PM
  • Rev hey dude, what's up? i was wondering, since your ambient catalogue has far exceeded mine, I was wondering if you could throw me some recs? i'm really look for stuff that gives the vibe of being on an alien world, if you can kind of get the kind of thing i'm looking for (super vague i know :p). thanks!
    May 12 02:34 PM
  • Xenophanes Haha, I don't think you're a fat whore if it's any consolation ; ]As for the SJF record, I downloaded it but haven't yet listened to it. Is it good?
    May 4 09:55 AM
  • Xenophanes And yet you give it a 2.5. Whaddya doing givin' me your D-List recs man? I want the good stuf -_- But yeah I'll give it a go. It's free, I dig the artist, and yeah it definitely sounds like my bag.
    May 3 04:58 PM
  • TheFonz123 again, it's vikki jackman-"of beauty reminiscing. i can provide you with a link if you like.
    April 29 05:07 PM
  • TheFonz123 Hey dude, you appear to be the ambient offical on the site right now so I have a proposition. There is an album I love called "of Beauty Reminiscing" by Vikki Jackman. i dont know how to add something to the database and it is one of my favorite ambient albums. great stuff. if you could add it to the database that would be fantastic. thanks
    April 29 04:40 PM
  • Graveyard if you need any post-punk recs, just let me know ;)
    April 29 11:50 AM
  • Days of Future Passed Just saw your "free music" list and went on a d/ling binge. The Colony/Akito Misaki album seems really interesting. Thanks dude!

  • TheGardener Just wanted to thank you for your review of Bersarin Quartett's II. Such an amazing album and I don't think I would have found it if you didn't write it. So thanks :p

  • Xenophanes I have not stopped listening to it since it dropped...so maybe its just Stockholm syndrome lol. But really, it succeeds as a substanceless piece of pretty music. So instead of me expressly enjoying it, I guess I'm saying that I find it "good enough" now that my initially disappointment has worn off
    April 21 06:00 PM
  • Xenophanes I'm actually beginning to come around to "Valtari"
    April 21 04:02 PM
  • Xenophanes Yeah i get what you mean. I attempt to talk to my friends about music and it almost always fails. Example, me going into great depth about my disappointment in the new Sigur Ros, only to have my friend say--they make music in Iceland?? We sputnikers are all we have lol
    April 20 05:52 PM
  • Xenophanes Haha, actually I was going to message you the same. I genuinely feel bad about posting a dickish critique earlier. I distinctly remember disagreeing with you about a winged victory, then eating my words later when I fell in love with it. So I will continue looking for what you see in that record. But what I'm really saying is, baby forgive me!
    April 20 12:21 PM
  • BaselineOOO but you're just saying...
    April 20 10:27 AM
  • Deviant. You'll have to ask in the meds thread, staff don't have anything to do with that. We can only feature lists
    April 20 08:19 AM
  • AGuyIsWatchingYou That was meant to say "my whole position against"
    April 17 09:31 PM
  • AGuyIsWatchingYou I dunno, I'm just not seeing it, Mick even turned down the link and offered to wait for an official release. Maybe it's just my who position against thinking about the hype an album gets for fear of disappointment, kind of like what I've been doing with Fleet Foxes since forever. Oh well, I haven't even listened to the album yet but I've heard it's darker than their other releases. Any truth to that or is it just a rehash of the second half of ( )?
    April 17 09:30 PM
  • AGuyIsWatchingYou I don't think there's a hype train for an album that leaked in s***ty quality a few days ago....
    April 16 04:38 PM
  • Xenophanes he always manages to impress me. HBW is one of my favorite albums ever, and even 7 Idiots kinda blew my mind. Thanks man, I'll let you know what I think, even if you don't care what i think because that's how I roll.
    April 16 02:35 PM
  • Xenophanes Is the new WEG that soundtrack? If so, might I ask how you came across it?
    April 16 01:54 PM
  • Xenophanes Yeah I kind of hate that I agree with you in regards to the new Sigur Ros. While I'm not so harsh on it, it saddens me that my favorite band has disappointed me so badly. It's as if they took the most boring parts of ( ) by taking out all of the dramatic climaxes and made a short album out of it. There's no explosive or memorable moments...it's just flat and lacking in any sort of passion. I'm going to continue to listen hoping I feel something but goddamn
    April 16 01:42 PM
  • BaselineOOO Thanks, getting it. And yea I know who he is, he's pretty great.
    April 16 01:17 PM
  • BaselineOOO Starry Starry Night soundtrack? I'm looking for it for quite while but I can't find it anywhere so if you can send me a link I'd be grateful. I think I heard a compilation from them once but I'm not entirely sure which, had a similar album cover but I don't think I've heard this one, thanks.
    April 16 12:46 PM
  • BaselineOOO np, the guy is really underhyped
    April 16 12:19 PM
  • breakingthefragile Hey man. Sorry about posting 7 reviews in a row, I just switched from reviewing music on Tumblr. to using Spunik, and I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this site. Those where all reviews I had previously written on Tumblr, and I just wanted to post them and get some reviews already posted on my profile to get started. I had absolutely no idea it would cause problems. No hard feelings? lol.

  • DeafMetal "The whole point of ambient, or at least the way it was envisioned, is that you can both listen to it passively and actively."... people who don't like ambient do not understand this key concept and i applaud you for drawing attention to it, as it is the cornerstone of what ambient/drone music truly stands for and encompasses...

  • alanranta Nice taste, my man.
    April 7 04:11 PM
  • ThroneOfAgony yeah same here. i typically like to listen to ambient during the winter and more dubstep/house/trance duringh the summer.
    April 5 01:00 PM
  • ThroneOfAgony So is ambient your favorite genre?
    April 5 11:59 AM
  • BaselineOOO I could say the same thing about The Romanovs.
    April 4 08:32 AM
  • BaselineOOO Your taste is pretty incredible, that Okkervil River album is brilliant, I feel so guilty for not loving it as much as I should.
    April 4 08:32 AM
  • BaselineOOO I trust your taste.

  • Piglet do you live in melbourne?
    January 20 04:49 PM
  • Knott- Ha, no, I appreciate it. If you wanna let me know outside a public forum, just email editor@byvolume.co.uk - and you're definitely right. The thing is, starting up, I wanted - and do still want - people to feel as free as they can. But I definitely acknowledge the point you're making, and agree to a certain extent. I just have to find a way towards a healthy medium.
    January 12 07:49 PM
  • Knott- Yeah, it's interesting because I want to give people as much license as possible to express themselves; I think every writer we have is a top-notch reviewer with some genuine insights. But I recognise that it could at times feel like a collection of writers as opposed to one publication. Out of interest, which pieces would you say don't fit the tone? If you don't mind.
    January 11 06:22 PM
  • Knott- By "tone", you mean the tone of the actual writing, sí?
    January 11 01:03 PM
  • Omaha Fantastic! That makes me feel a lot better. :] I really appreciate you taking your time to discuss my review; I feel like I really learned a lot about my writing, what I like and don't like about it.
    December 22 09:58 PM
  • Omaha Hey man, I made some heavy edits on my review. If you would be interested in reading through it and seeing if the changes you mentioned have taken place, then I would be very appreciative. Cheers!

  • Cells When did I ever proclaim myself an anarchist? Never. Just because I said I like a girl that is rebellious doesn't mean you can assume that and doing so makes you look like an idiot. And what the **** are you saying? How is that a "hollywood belief"? Just because I have STANDARDS and PREFERENCES doesnt mean its a hollywood belief. If anything my preferences go against that of the hollywood archetype. Just stop being mad cuz YOU said something stupid and I pointed it out.

    October 25 08:34 AM
  • DaveyBoy Wild Beasts are clearly unique and original. No doubt about that. Unfortunately, I could only get into Two Dancers. There is something about Smother which is just too sterile for me. We clearly have different priorities in the type of music we like to listen to. I am glad we agree on this and can still give other types a try. And it definitely was not me who negged your review.
    October 12 07:16 PM
  • DaveyBoy In a Twilight Zone twist, when we were having that discussion on original music, I was about to mention Wild Beasts, as that is what I was listening to at the time. Lo and behold, I go to Smother and who reviewed it. Freaky.
