Just to clarify I use usually map out everything in my mind first but I never write anything down. So for that purpose I do technically write as I go. Sorry for the confusion.

 | twlichty The studio time was free for me because the bassist in my band has a recording studio in his basement, worked out nicely haha. He usually charges $25 an hour for other bands he records. I used to do a lot of recordings like you're talking about when i was just starting out, and it's a good way to learn how to record and what sounds good. I hear ya on the drum mikes thing though, everything for drummers is so freaking expensive.

I'm listening to Amia Venera Landscape's "The Long Procession" right now, and it is pretty devestating. Definitely like what I hear so far. Any other band recommendations? | fr33convict I guarantee you on Ruiner he's using throat but that's cause it's the thrash metal vocal style. He uses a lot of grit on his vocals but he's definitely using it on the singing parts.

| fr33convict yeah i don't care for them much myself but i'm sorry but they're not going anywhere. i personally prefer his screaming voice myself (great range, awesome growl) to his cleans which are usually pitchy or rough but there's no way he's leaving the band and he wants to be known as more of a singer instead of a screamer. plus there's no way to get mainstream success as an all screaming band and to be honest my heart isn't in making that type of music right now.
