| liledman Haha that's gold. Awesome dude, glad you are digging it. It is a pretty intense one, though if you can wrap your head around that then most of Coltrane's stuff should be approachable. Both Meditations and Sun Ship are fantastic.
| SgtPepper That was incredible. I loved the sound, very mellow sound. I've never heard of Milton Nascimento but I'm eager to get some of his stuff. I'll definitely look into the album you recommended. Thanks, mate.
| Jom Yes, please! The site can't yet process accented characters (yet). Thanks for writing, appreciate it!
| SgtPepper Thanks, man. Hopefully things turn out well. I'll definitely try to pump out as many jazz reviews as I can.
| liledman coleman should start unravelling a bit more every time you kind of break into harsher stuff, because he is still incredibly melodic. his style is just fascinating. haha that live in japan set is just insane. very rewarding listen though, even if you just go one track per listen or something.
| liledman awesome man. yeah its really interesting, every time i come back to it, each of the players stands out more on their own. freddie hubbard is a really distinctive player too, and he always seems to sound like himself whether hes playing bop, free or his later fusion stuff.
| liledman yeah ascension is probably not his craziest performance, but having all the others there and the intensity of the interplay makes it stand out. ornette coleman's album 'free jazz' is basically the same thing, a double quartet. makes for an interesting listen.
| liledman thats a pretty awesome combo of artists right there. mccoy tyner is actually coming out for the melbourne jazz fest, tickets are like $100 though and im flat broke. so frustrating. yeah ive still been on a bit of a classical kick, but ive just downloaded a whole bunch of random stuff so who knows where it will take me. im trying to slow down my listening habits though, too excited about new stuff but i need to enjoy what ive already got.
| liledman haha nice. the experience of those albums can be amplified certainly by alcohol or other substances, or even better, an early morning half awake state. the intensity is ten fold (whether thats good or bad depends on how far around the corner you are i guess). let me know what you think of ascension, because if you dig the others, its then just like adding more players. what else have you been listening to lately?
| aok from what i typed it appears you are a better person than i. and remember to always look for the chance to 'put the knife in'
| aok thank you thank you. will look into it
| liledman ive got the village vanguard box set, so damn good. id be interested in seeing what you think of interstellar space, they are some fiery duets. i find those drum/sax duets he more frequently implemented late in his career are some of the most inspiring moments. just so raw.
| liledman haha yeah i have a problem with containing my love for that quartet. the live stuff is great, and the live albums are really interesting because its like his studio life was a few months behind what he was doing live, its all experimenting. the live in japan album is just a behemoth though, 40-50 minute jams...
| liledman yeah its funny i thought my favourite things would be just a novelty thing, but the song itself is really great. i read this cool thesis i guy posted online, charting coltranes maturation through 4 performances of my favourite things, seeing as it was one of the few songs he kept playing.
| liledman yeah im pretty much the same, havent really explored his catalogue too much... unlike coltrane's gold mine which i constantly raid haha.
| liledman yeah it definitely keeps it interesting the whole time, no filler. its a good length for that sort of stuff. i need to check out more of his stuff, and also later miles stuff, there are quite a few of his that ive put off for too long.
| liledman his wholehearted embrace of electronic elements is definitely way ahead of the rest of the jazz game. its like bitches brew and electronic noises in some ****ed up alien blender.
| liledman listening to sextant now, damn its cool.
| Pharoh ohisee, she looks 90% like my ex, just a tad more wavy hair, and a "coke bottle" figure, if you get me.
| Steoandnoodles Thanks a bunch man! =)This is great. Nothing like waking up to some smooth jazz.
| patrickfannon Yeah, I need to listen to High Violet a bunch more. I remember being blown away by it on a few occassions, but sometimes it feels so burdensome to get into. Oh, I meant to ask you, have you heard of Bill Callhan and/or smog? His LP from this year, Apocalypse, is a solid 4 for me, and I think you might like it. Hope all's well, dude.
| patrickfannon Oh, awesome man! I'm so happy you like the Bon Iver album as well. It's really fantastic, and if you have it at a 4 now, I'd definitely expect to see it grow to a 4.5 in the not-too-distant future. Still haven't gotten around to PJ Harvey, but the new Middle East album is really great. What else are you listening to these days?
| patrickfannon Well, I guess those italics funtcions only work in message boards. Hahaha, sorry about that. Lesson learned!
| patrickfannon Hey Chris, I've never gotten into PJ Harvey, but I've only ever heard great things. I'm going to download Let England Shake and let you know what I think. I hope you love the new Bon Iver. It's fantastic.
| patrickfannon Thanks for the compliment, man. I really appreciate it. Also, you've got terrifyingly good taste. What's your pick for AOTY so far? Well, thanks again, and I look forward to talking music with you in the future. Have a nice holiday weekend.
| aok 'animals' is a more arduous journey, but it's got a way higher upside
| aok hey man -- you ever listen to 'animals'? 'dogs' is arguably pink floyd's greatest achievement as a band
| liledman good to hear man. check out alice coltrane - journey in satchidananda, joe henderson - multiple, i guess some more modal stuff like herbie hancock - maiden voyage, and other pharoah sanders albums: elevation, black unity and summun bukmun umyun.
| alachlahol one of the greatest jazz albums of all time and such a beautiful genre in general glad you're enjoying it
