| Cygnatti hey there, I'm a big fan of your music, if you can't already tell.
| Havey Don't know about that. Occasional temper tantrums aside, i'm a pretty sunny person :] tho if a single hate post (not even hate, really) makes you upset then you should probably learn to handle the internet a lil better, js!
| Cygnatti Uh, I never said banal. Besides that was potsy, don't take him seriously too often.
| LilLioness I still have to hear the rest before I can choose faves and I may not be able to do that in the time remaining this year. The title of "Flagpole Sitter" definitely reminds me of that 90s song, though. xD
| LilLioness Of what I have heard, Epizootics has some really engaging bits. I haven't downloaded the album, though, so it may be a while before I hear it.
| LilLioness I am not in love with it so far (and on the thread I mentioned that I am not into the quiet whispered parts as they feel too dramatic to me), but I do think I like it more than the Seer. What meanings are you pulling from Bish Bosch so far? :)
| MisterTornado Such possibilities can't rendered to the limitations of human thoug- OF COURSE! I BELIEVE IN BOTH ALBUMS. But sometimes you've gotta keep it giggles, y'know.
| LilLioness listening to it. I would have just turned it down, but then her voice is oddly placed in the mix to where she is barely audible when I have the volume at optimal percussion-not-raping-my-ears level. Anyway, I will probably give it (Bish Bosch) a pretty high score, regardless of how much I like it. It sounds really innovative, even if it throws me off. I am objectively nice like that. :D
| LilLioness Oh, I also see we feel quite differently about the new Passion Pit LP. I found it horrendously boring and mostly forgettable. XD But then again, as much as I dislike that LP and Koloss and and L'enfant Sauvage, nothing will bottom that Purity Ring lp. Seriously, **** that percussion. Percussion never needs to be mixed with that much pop. I would describe in technical terms why I hate it so much, but I don't think I can really. All I know is that genuinely offended/hurt my ears both times I tried
| LilLioness So I watched the Bish Bosch album trailer that 4AD just posted. I really like the soundscapes they are building are actually really engaging. However, if Scott Walker's vocals are going to sound the way they do in the trailer without any sort of fluctuation whatsoever....it is will probably be a mixed bag for me. As it stands, the sounds his voice is making do not really match the shades and tones of the music. Maybe the point is contrast, though, I guess.
| GiaNXGX Yeah, I'm pretty varied myself but black metal was not really good this year. I disagree with "OM" though - There are many incredible bands out there, not just cheap "kvlt" bedroom projects lol. I'm probably gonna review it next month (if Crysis does not), haha I remember when you were going to neg my review because my personal rating was not equal to the review's!
| GiaNXGX Hey dude I also loved Dor De Duh's latest! It's amazing, the atmosphere and instrumental arrangements are so polished. It's an incredible achievement within the realms of pagan black metal. Pretty much what I was expecting from a Negura Bunget side-project.
| LilLioness Did you check out Rwake? Also, have you heard of Ultraista?
| LilLioness Looks like he has got something coming out in December. Perfect place to start for me. I love how any BM thing I happen to like is always the "crappy" BM and the things those who call the stuff crappy idolize really obnoxiously boring stuff. I know different strokes and everything, but I just find that disconnect kinda odd. Most often I can at least comprehend a person's inclinations.
| Aids oh ok fair enough. i wasn't accusing i just didn't recognize your username. who are you in the mezz crew? (um...aka in real life haha)
| I have heard of Scott Walker, but have yet to hear anything of his. I know his underground reputation is pretty huge. Yeah, my preferences are sometimes as grim as they are doofy. "Lure of Light" by Rwake is one of the best achievements in sludge metal, imo, as it puts you in a very vivid, unique place. Not entirely negative, but definitely intimidating and colossal. I will also check out The National.
| At the moment, I am listening to the Ultraista stream on NPR, since it will probably get taken down by tomorrow morning. I think I read somewhere that Lynch does some work on a track. I listened to Crazy Clown Time through NPR before its release and while I haven't heard the whole album a second time yet, I do keep coming back to "Good day today". I have only seen bits and pieces of his films yet, though.
| LilLioness As for specific sounds: the droney guitar throughout the Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath soundtrack, the hazy synths in "Voices Carry" by Til Tuesday, the extended melodic passage in "Ghost of Perdition" by Opeth where he is talking about the diary and the last four minutes of "Fossil Genera" with the pizza strings and acoustic guitar are up there at the top of my favorite sounds in music I have ever heard.
| LilLioness I got into AC because my first ex was obsessed with them and I guess she saw similarities with DT's music (which are actually several). Listening to Infinity and then Feels...yeah, you could almost swear they were influenced by him.
| LilLioness So you are very feeling (subjective to what you can relate to) first and technique way back back in the aether? XD I like oddball stuff. I love curveballs. DT's goofiness and zen oriented nature (with lots of GRRRRRRRRRRRS) pretty much exemplifies how I feel music is at its best. The offbeat/neuroticish nature of Meshuggah and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. The seriouslynevergivinga**** of Mike Patton. Self mockery really makes an experience for me.
| LilLioness What, for you, exemplifies good metal music. Like, what components connect with you? Varying production quality? Song structures? Tempos? All that jazz.
| LilLioness XD So that makes you a very recent big fan. The Becoming is Abigail Williams' last record. People of all stripes have shat all over it for "being a Wolves in the Throne Room clone" or some s***, but I don't care. After disappointments from Gojira and Meshuggah, it took me by complete surprise and the closer remains my favorite song of the year so far.
| Steoandnoodles Haha, I haven't a clue. XD What about Villagers? They're a cool band from Ireland and will be opening for Grizzly Bear on their next tour.
| LilLioness Shields is gorgeous and a bit more streamlined. Def one of the best albums I have heard so far (still find The Becoming the best of the year so far), but it hasn't yet connected with me on a deeper level yet.
| LilLioness "Sun in Your Eyes" just barely got an A from me. There were bits I found lacking, but the song as a whole works pretty well. As far as their whole career goes, I feel that Veckamest is their magnum so far. It may just be because I associate it with my really s***ty first relationship and break up (I am trans and she tried to manipulate me to be "normal". That isn't to say I wasn't a bitch to her as well), but it actually speaks to me on a deep level.
| LilLioness I listened to the whole album when it streamed on NPR. In my notes, I wrote down that I found "Yet Again", "The Hunt", "What's Wrong"(despite some gorgeous bits) and "Gun-shy" the least interesting. All four tracks, while having something that would appeal to me just fell short of engaging my love. I love "Sleeping Ute"-reminds me of "Plans" and "Southern Point", my two fav Grizzly Bear tracks so far of their career-"Speak in Rounds", "A Simple Answer" and "Half Gate".
| Steoandnoodles Cool, glad you liked 'em. =) Some really beautiful stuff. What have you been enjoying lately?
| Like Dream Theater? Hopefully that won't materialize as aggressively bad news for me. :O What tracks are you really digging from Shields?
| LilLioness I finally finished Centipede Hz. As you can see from my rating, I strongly disagree with most critics. Not only that. I personally feel like it is a very good step away from MPP, in a better direction. And Parallax II gay? I may wind up really digging that one then. ;D I eat box like it ain't nuthin.
| Steoandnoodles I'd say check out either their most recent self titled album or Gather Form and Fly. =)
| Steoandnoodles I honestly think I might agree with you. =P I've listened to We Are Him and New Mother and I love them both. It's right up my style. I love folk with abstractions. Have you gotten the chance to check out Megafaun?
| Steoandnoodles Got any recs for me? And how is the new house all set up for you? =) Is it nice?
| Steoandnoodles Well, anything under the Bedroom Community record label might tickle your fancy then. =) Try Valgeir Sigurosson. Sam Amdion does vocals on his second album Dreamland. Here's his first. http://www.bedroomcommunity.net/releases/ekvilibrium Or perhaps try Megafaun. They have quite instrumentally driven and progressive folk tracks. =) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIgpNUYhLtM Glad you liked Sam Amidon. He's worth seeing live too if you get the chance. He's very funny and has a really warm presence
| LilLioness Also, my opinion of the album may be influenced by my disdain for Koloss (I usually love Meshuggah, but that album didn't feel focused at all and during the more spacious moments of The Seer, I was reminded of how impatient I felt listening to that record). Btw, of the pre Sung Tongs AC, which album should I tackle first? I love Tongs and Feels and am so-so about MPP and Strawberry Jam.
| LilLioness Nah. I get you. And I can relate to sincerity in music, although I don't always like the music the sincerity is accompanied by. In the case of The Seer (I haven't listened fully through another Swans release yet), I just couldn't connect to a portion of the music which made listening to the longer tracks more difficult. And I think that is true of any artists' work. If they aren't doing anything the listener is connecting with, the listener isn't going to feel too kindly about
| LilLioness stuff like Swans is too in its own little world for its own good.
| LilLioness To answer your statement, I prefer goofy, "let's just **** around" music to self-serious stuff. Dev and Patton are what I really like in music. I can dig serious stuff, but I tend to get put off by artists placing their issues on a pedestal without taking the time to acknowledge that doing such is kinda pretentious. So yeah, I do love Deconstruction because the whole album he irreverently acknowledges that his personal issues are pretentious bs. If you prefer self-serious, is fine. I just feel -
| Steoandnoodles Check him out. =) http://www.bedroomcommunity.net/releases/i_see_the_signI think you might be a Wild Beasts fan too if you haven't already heard them.
| Steoandnoodles I'm already a huge Talking Heads fan and I already have Remain in Light on CD. =) I'll check out Scott Walker though, thanks. =)
| Steoandnoodles I like music abstraction. Things that aren't right will interest me and from what I hear; Swans seems to be that. Thanks for the heads up though. I'm definitely checking out White Light first. Anything else from other artists while I'm at it? I've just finished listening to a batch of albums recently and got the ones I liked on order so I'm ready for more. =)
| Sowing It doesn't get to me...not much does after four years on the site lol. But still, its nice to hear the appreciation duo thank you

| Polymath Dude sup, what are you drinking this evening? I love Swans right now and whiskey.
