    March 26 08:03 PM
  • Spec the the cube sessions, k bye
    March 26 07:52 PM
  • Voivod On second thought, strike Gian as a tech thrash band, check them out nonetheless.
    March 2 04:50 PM
  • Voivod Unfortunately the sport is not excercized by many outfits nowadays, last two entries are Dimesland and Gian (more like melodic death/thrash, but technical at that).
    March 2 04:46 PM
  • Voivod excellent crossover thrash from Estonia, unfortunately the album is partially streaming -
    March 2 04:36 PM
  • Voivod From the old AA albums, I liked Clockwork more than anything else, and all of them are great albums, even the first one.
    February 28 12:08 PM
  • Voivod The recently released Angelus Apatrida was quite good.
    February 28 11:55 AM
  • Voivod killer thrash from Finland (Aratic - Secret Laws of Hell) -
    February 28 09:51 AM
  • OmairSh LS has some really cool bits, and some not so cool bits. Leprous is a monstrous band. They'll hopefully be releasing the AOTY.
    February 19 01:07 AM
  • OmairSh Yeah you're right, the release is too far away!! Yeah they do the mellow and aggressive stuff equally well. I hope it's not too similar to the new LS album, that was a let down. At least Leprous' album will be released a little earlier.
    February 18 09:00 PM
  • OmairSh New Riverside album out in a few months, really excited. Although I'm a little anxious to see the direction they've taken, hopefully it will be refreshing.
    February 18 07:20 PM
  • Winsomniac R U FEELING IT NOWWWW
    February 4 07:43 PM
  • Winsomniac It was definitely cheesy as s***. Idk I still dig the polyrhythms enough to go back to a song or two every few months
    February 4 02:14 AM
  • Winsomniac Whoa man! Imaginary Condition was pretty cool. Idk, it might be my AHP. Remember how you thought that album isn't kind of awful? :D
    February 3 11:57 PM
  • Winsomniac Well yeah. It's BoO. If nothing else, it'll be loads of fun.
    February 3 09:22 PM
  • Winsomniac F0ckin' b0w d0wn m/
    February 3 05:18 PM
  • Voivod yeah they do go about death metal as well; also, the excellent vocals are from one of the female members... You have to know it to really believe it!
    December 28 05:49 PM

    December 28 05:19 AM

    November 25 10:41 PM
  • Winsomniac Yeah, I definitely know that feel ;_;
    November 25 07:47 PM
  • Voivod Crossover thrash with a twist from Finland -
    November 25 07:28 PM
  • Winsomniac Really? I've been streaming it heavily today, and maybe it's just the fact that it's great productive background music for me, but I thoroughly enjoy it!
    November 25 06:21 PM
  • Winsomniac Broc! How ya been dude? Also, I don't know if you're into that kind of music but jam Submotion Orchestra's new record if you get a chance ("Trust / Lust" and "Time Will Wait" being good examples)
    November 25 06:02 PM
  • Voivod You really need to check this demo out ;) -
    November 17 05:56 PM
  • Dancedrewdance You are awesome man
    November 14 04:00 AM
  • Gmork89 I really didn't enjoy that album, I tried to get into it but the only song I ever listened to repeatedly was Down, it just seemed really uninspired. This new one is just a real surprise, especially how dark it is, I didn't think they would go back to that violet/WWS sound again after how rock oriented their last 2 were.
    November 10 10:08 AM
  • Gmork89 It is, I was worried after their last album but I think they redeemed themselves on this one.
    November 9 04:29 PM
  • Gmork89 Dat new Birthday Massacre...
    November 8 08:33 PM
  • Voivod Yeah, it crushes most thrash metal albums that got out this year.
    November 2 01:53 PM
  • Voivod British thrash metal that deserves your attention:
    November 2 05:26 AM

  • Insurrection The new Neurotech leaked :)
    October 27 10:16 PM
  • Voivod hahaha that's the spirit! The album is awesome, band sounds better than Municipal Waste, for example.
    October 20 10:16 PM
  • Voivod Ran into thisterribly fun crossover thrash band from Italy and thought I'd let in the know -
    October 20 03:02 AM
  • OmairSh -_- For that album, its blasphemous. I know you want your objectivity above 90 but damn :-P
    October 13 10:33 PM
  • OmairSh Dude your Leprous - Bilateral rating hurts my eyes, give her another chance. Its a quite difficult album to digest.
    October 13 09:43 PM
  • Dancedrewdance I'm sick of twisting the knobs
    October 6 04:22 AM
  • Voivod Glad you liked it, I saw that you have rated the first Algebra album, you can listen to their sophomore effort here -
    September 23 03:03 AM
  • Voivod Hey man, how are you holding up? Here's an obscure thrash/death metal gem from Italy -
    September 22 03:59 AM
  • zakalwe DM, pos violator?? All I know is as a band they totally rule and they've done one of my greatest ever with personal jesus.
    September 1 05:28 PM
  • zakalwe It was a test dude having looked at previous posts. You rule and are probably correct!
    September 1 05:11 PM
  • zakalwe Dude, greatest song of all time?
    September 1 01:54 PM
  • Dancedrewdance Do it in your mind
    August 28 08:47 PM
  • Dancedrewdance hey bloc add me on tumblr

    July 12 02:10 PM
  • Voivod Hey I think you like this, adventurous thrash metal from Salt Lake City, Utah -
    July 9 06:25 AM
  • Dancedrewdance Man I love the ending of hook line and sinner
    June 18 10:40 PM
  • Voivod You'll love this, death/thrash metal from Serbia -
    May 12 03:27 PM
  • OmairSh It's mainly songs from SONGS though. And Piotr G looks uninterested. Still I don't mind good quality live performances of Riverside :-). No worries.
    May 6 07:23 PM
  • OmairSh Better qualty than their first DVD, but the mix is congested,Riverside-i-nowe-pokolenie-muzyczne-Zobacz-wideo
    May 6 01:27 PM
  • Voivod It's mostly error for me too, but every now and then, something good pops up, so the hunt is worth it overall.
    May 1 04:16 AM
  • Voivod Simply by trial-and-error haha ;-)
    April 30 02:59 AM
  • Voivod Hey man, I think you will like this -
    April 29 08:32 AM
  • Acanthus It's my favorite release by them, pretty sure it's almost perfect.
    April 24 09:28 PM
  • Acanthus Yeah that album slays in general, at the very least it's been a long time since you've heard it.
    April 24 10:32 AM
  • dannyboy89 Saw a post on the Violator thread. Been too busy with academic stuff man, so I haven't made time for reviewing lately. Maybe in May when class is over, I might make the time.
    April 24 12:36 AM
  • Acanthus Glad you liked it, it was a blast to sing along; hadn't heard some of those in ages.
    April 23 08:06 PM
  • Acanthus Took a lot of those new CDs and mixed with them, if you want some Futurepop nostalgia give it a go:
    April 21 09:31 AM
  • Acanthus Yeah I can understand that, especially for the rarer/lesser known albums.
    April 6 11:41 AM
  • Voivod Hi man, I think you will like this, solid thrash from Spain -
    April 6 09:28 AM
  • Acanthus I was going to buy from Amazon but then remembered that Metropolis did mail-orders; most of them were $13 each, but that was still cheaper than Amazon shipping if I bought them used (and these are new). Had to get AXOE from Amazon though, and picked up Seabound locally for $9. Been meaning to buy more music lately, and finally got around to it. Last week I did a futurepop set and it really pissed me off that I didn't have good quality bitrates on the songs I wanted to use.
    April 5 01:24 PM
  • Acanthus I have the futurepop bug again, bought these on CD today:Covenant: Leaving Babylon Covenant: Northern Light Apoptygma Berzerk: Harmonizer Assemblage 23: Storm Assemblage 23: Meta Icon Of Coil: Machines are Us Panzer AG: This is My Battlefield Rotersand: Welcome to Goodbye Flesh Field: Strain Seabound: No Sleep Demon V2.0AXOE: Telegraphic
    April 5 12:25 PM
  • MasBarHigeuoris21 Your review comments for Johnny Truant In the Library of Horric events swas spot on. Thanks for posting that.
    April 4 10:59 AM
  • Acanthus Giving "Robots Don't Lie" a listen, I think I've finally come to a point where I can enjoy THYX's sound.
    March 29 11:46 AM
  • Acanthus Well they are less known if I had to guess, but maybe the name change was just a coincidence?
    March 20 10:28 AM
  • Acanthus Yeah the original is pretty badass, though I liked how the cover turned out. Myers gave up the Destroid name for DSTR after an americanized dubstep "supergroup" started using the name; caused some confusion among fans for awhile.
    March 19 10:37 AM
  • Acanthus Assume you've heard this cover?
    March 17 11:30 PM
  • Owantjaaaa Yo bloc, you are sputnik's biggest FACT fan right?Their latest album was released last week
    March 17 09:26 AM
  • Acanthus Will look at it then, thanks sir.
    March 8 07:53 PM
  • dannyboy89 KEA is way overlooked on this site, I'm thinking about doing a 5 review for it.
    March 8 06:33 PM
  • Acanthus Might have to look it up, don't think I enjoyed much of their older stuff but things change.
    March 8 11:41 AM
  • Acanthus Definitely, that's so 2010.
    March 7 11:22 PM
  • Acanthus Yup, the "classic" EBM/Futurepop sound is pretty hard to find outside the genre staples. Sucks hard, because with the influx of new electronic music in other areas I'd hoped that EBM would pick up too (and be quality).
    March 6 11:14 PM
  • Acanthus True, but Leaving Babylon has more than one great track for me; I wanted more driven songs as well. Sad to see how the music market has become, but it's also provided some cool creative bits too; I think I'd be happy with it being a 4/5.
    March 5 10:05 PM
  • Acanthus Yeah for me the Covenant album was pretty much what I'd hoped for, aka more upbeat than Modern Ruin. I haven't gone back and listened to a lot of futurepop/EBM, but lately it's been taking up more of my time; wish I had paid attention to bitrates when I first started collecting because it's just sad to have this many fun albums in low quality. I really hope Neuroticfish blow my socks off with this album, it'd be a wonderful surprise!
    March 5 09:39 AM
  • Acanthus Yeah just finally got Les Chansons Neurotiques the other day, been meaning to pick it up for years now. Looking forward to the new album, and though I know you didn't like the new Covenant it seems like we may have a pretty good lineup to the year so far.
    March 4 10:22 AM
  • Acanthus Been craving some of that futurepop sound but wanted something new and actually enjoyable, glad you enjoyed it! No news as far as I can find on a solid release date, but I assume it has to be soonish.
    March 3 10:50 AM
  • Acanthus New (3 months ago) Neuroticfish video for his upcoming album, it's ****ing awesome to have the group back and it be this enjoyable:
    March 2 05:57 PM
  • Mad. Reviewed the new HAC, maybe it'll change yo lil mind
    February 15 06:38 PM
  • Mad. o rly
    February 13 12:23 PM
  • Mad. Aww come on brah I bet you haven't even heard it
    February 12 02:51 AM
  • Mad. Dat HAC rating
    February 11 01:11 PM
  • Spec I was about to comment in the emmure news thread then I saw you said everyone in there was going to listen to the album so I didn't.
    February 2 07:21 PM
  • Voivod Just jammed the eponymous track from the Condition Critical album, the band cuts it indeed.
    February 2 04:10 PM
  • Voivod Shrapnel's debut album came to the site for review and while I was/am reluctant to review it due to "no free time" issues, I checked their two EPs and frankly they are one of the few decent thrash metal revival bands out there. Will check your rec and get back to you in due time.
    February 2 03:43 PM
  • Voivod This band's thrash kicks serious ass bloc, check this tune and let me know what you think -
    February 2 03:10 AM
  • Insurrection I did too, but it's really not much different from what they've done before. Don't want to oversell it or anything though, let me know what you think when you get a chance to hear it.
    January 16 09:06 PM
  • Insurrection I'll admit I didn't think it was that special at first but it really grows on you.
    January 16 08:44 PM
  • Insurrection Anxiously awaiting to hear what you think of the new Periphery EP :P
    January 16 10:23 AM
  • SadAndHolyGlow Right. A shame.
    January 11 08:03 PM
  • SadAndHolyGlow Wow. Just a week or so after we talked about Benea Reach, they broke up. Weird. I'm posting a news article on it.
    January 11 02:02 PM
  • Kusangii I listened to some songs of it and it sounded really interesting, definitely going to listen in full soon. Legions was alright though, pretty unmemorable and forgettable in the end, with a few cool moments imo. And yeah, I don't think there's any classic thrash band that has released an album in this century that's worthy of a 4 or higher rating tbh.
    December 16 10:13 AM
  • DatBeefPudding oh neat, that makes sense. i just checked the wiki page and it said the album was mostly successful in japan so i guess i can understand why they did it... sort of. and also their label was Sony so that also adds to it.
    December 10 10:49 PM
  • DatBeefPudding yeah that just blows my mind. and wasn't the label canadian that they were signed to at the time as well?
    December 10 10:35 PM
  • DatBeefPudding especially since all the B-side songs are generally AWESOME. why not just extend the length of the original LP?
    December 10 09:57 PM
  • DatBeefPudding yeah i don't know why they added additional songs to the Japanese (i think it's the Japanese) version. a few bands have done this, and it seems to generally always be the punk or pop-punk bands. it baffles me.
    December 10 09:56 PM
  • DatBeefPudding i figured you'd like it considering i love it myself. i totally forgot about this record until a few days ago and i've been listening to it non-stop. shoplifter is one of my favourite tracks
    December 10 06:27 PM
  • DatBeefPudding i noticed you enjoy Gob! if you haven't heard the B-sides from Foot in Mouth Disease then you simply must!
    December 8 09:30 PM
  • Kusangii Agreed about the singles, the opening track is pretty solid though imo. Oh well, I suppose you can't expect too much of the Stützer-brothers, considering they're pretty old now. I haven't even heard When Death Comes yet, maybe I should turn my hopes over to that album instead.
    November 30 08:30 AM
  • Kusangii Damn, is the new Artillery album really just a 2.5? My hopes are quite high for that one...
    November 28 06:40 AM
  • Decay sup man, what genres do u like? :)
    November 15 04:23 PM
  • Storm In A Teacup Hi bloc! What is really good in 2013 that I may have missed? Something like your top two picks?
    November 14 06:40 PM
  • Winsomniac Really? I'd highly recommend Shudder. Excellent guitarwork, and the album before that (The Walking Wounded) is pretty good.
    November 12 04:33 PM
  • Winsomniac Yeah, actually after listening to it...Not that great. The guitars can only carry it so hard..
    November 12 04:05 PM
    November 12 04:02 PM
  • Acanthus Yeah I like it, but the rest of the album is more of a standard thing; still solid though.
    November 5 09:19 PM
  • Acanthus If you feel the need for some EBM/Agrro give this track a try, going through the album now but really love this one (especially at work, really makes you pick up the pace):
    November 4 09:25 PM
  • Simsalabim462 Hey there. I was curious about that Vista Chino rating, so I thought I'd get a grasp of your taste in Stoner. Very nice! On a side note, that Unwound rating really caught me off-guard...and made me sad. Animal Collective's MPP was expected, but it's all good. My objectivity is kinda s*** on this site...anyway, neat stuff!
    October 26 02:43 PM
  • DatBeefPudding how you like it? im curious
    October 23 08:58 PM
  • DatBeefPudding erra leaked if you're interested. it will tide me over till the actual release, i defs plan on buying this masterpiece. yessssssssssss i said masterpiece :p
    October 20 08:12 PM
  • Shimana fck u toronto rules
    October 18 02:29 PM
  • Toondude10 It's the first album since their debut that's under 50 minutes, and VF is shorter than their debut.
    October 10 05:52 PM
  • Toondude10 I saw your shoutout on Vengeance Falls and just pointing this out to you, but VF is Trivium's shortest album
    October 9 12:31 PM
  • Acanthus Didn't know it leaked but knew it was coming, added it to the db a bit ago. Really not expecting anything at all from them, not sure if that is a sad or smart thing.
    October 8 09:28 PM
  • DatBeefPudding haha i figured, i just saw your name and was like "BLOC HOW!??!?!" in my head
    October 2 10:40 PM
  • demigod! well demigod. wouldve seemed pretentious and demigod? is just weird soWHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO BLOC
    October 2 04:49 PM
  • demigod! well i wouldnt say it SUCKS but yeah i wanted to just drop the 93 but apparently theres an old inactive user named demigod, so :(
    October 2 04:47 PM
  • DatBeefPudding bloc how could you rate Marcus D's "Melancholy Hopeful" a 2.5?! it's so chill.
    October 2 01:17 AM
  • Acanthus So is this, the VAST comparison is still insanely valid but I swear Numan's voice is just getting better with age.
    September 30 11:35 PM
  • Acanthus Check the new Gary Numan if you haven't, well worth it.
    September 29 09:49 PM
  • Metalstyles I don't, but I'd still love to regain my writing form (and flair, especially flair, because god knows that' the component I miss the most). I think it would be for general good.
    September 27 05:31 PM
  • Metalstyles But I want a cure!
    September 27 05:18 PM
  • Metalstyles Oh and usually the page or two that I in fact manage to muster up isn't the greatest literary material out there haha.
    September 27 04:34 PM
  • Metalstyles You're correct, lately it seems I'm incapable of writing more than a page or two's worth about anything. What makes the whole situation especially weird is that I've seen inspiring movies, heard inspiring albums, had thought-provoking conversations, and yet none of those seem to have any positive effect on my writing.
    September 27 04:33 PM
  • Metalstyles Yeah and lately I've been in dire need of added creativity. God knows why but ever since spring I've been lacking it.
    September 27 08:34 AM
  • Metalstyles Indeed it would though I doubt I could pull it off in style. I'm pretty sharp irl, but I'm not great at transitioning cleverness into my writing when I do it in English. I guess I'm still not as comfortable with the language as I could/should be.
    September 26 05:18 PM
  • Metalstyles We'll see, maybe I can improve upon my black talk ;)
    September 26 03:12 AM
  • Metalstyles I know, I'm too white to be saying that hahahaha
    September 25 06:46 PM
  • Metalstyles Well yeah but I'm never going to give you the satisfaction and say "that diss was hot yo" ;)
    September 25 02:43 AM
  • Metalstyles Oh that's just ice cold my man!
    September 24 05:53 PM
  • Metalstyles So I gave that album you rec'd a listen and unfortunately I wasn't too impressed with it as a whole (the title track was pretty killer though). Some of the leads were pretty cool, but both the industrial elements and melodic death metal elements were too standard-fare for me. Thanks for the rec though, on paper I should've loved it.
    September 24 07:48 AM
  • Winsomniac I thought new BoO wasn't anywhere near as awesome as it could have been, but it wasn't complete s***. Just really out there. But I fanboy them hard.
    September 19 05:42 PM
  • Winsomniac Yeah I was blown away by how much better this is than a lot of deathcore lately.
    September 19 05:39 PM
  • Winsomniac Ah, I see. Oh well. I thought you would like the melodies n stuff. Cheers!
    September 19 05:29 PM
  • Winsomniac I just wanted to see if you liked the album, tbh. I really ****ing liked the record
    September 19 05:06 PM
  • Winsomniac
    September 19 04:52 PM
  • Metalstyles Awesome man, sounds like my kinda thing. I'll give it a go ASAP.
    September 12 02:09 AM
  • JokineAugustus Ya man. It just takes me a very long time to get into new music no matter what genre. I'm slowly improving on that though.
    September 4 09:53 PM
  • JokineAugustus Damn you got pretty varied taste imo. Hopefully I'll get that open minded one day.
    September 4 09:15 PM
  • Acanthus Yeah I haven't heard their discog either, just really like the dudes voice. Been listening to Pandora a lot lately and that's about it.
    September 3 07:07 PM
  • Acanthus It's not "new" but I'm just getting around to the latest Blutengel album and am saddened by your rating (though I can agree). They're just one group that is always solid and hasn't really disappointed me, Pohl may not be innovating but their sound works really well.
    September 3 05:03 PM
  • OmairSh Where the f uck did you get time to listen to 4.5k albums?
    August 31 12:44 AM
  • Omaha Hey man, I know exactly why you said what you did! I just needed to take it further.
    August 30 03:10 PM
  • Omaha Mine is even deeper in meaning, though. Adds a metaphysical importance.
    August 30 02:59 PM
  • Guiro Great taste in futurepop. What is your favorite Assemblage 23 album? Defiance ftw
    August 29 08:55 AM
  • Eloriaz Will do!
    August 27 03:44 PM
  • Eloriaz are awesome! I gave listens to "Lost Alone" and "Dreamweb" and I'm really hooked. Guess I'm in for a treat with "Crossroads". I like how they blend synthpop, EBM and trance altogether. They have a very modern sound to me. And they do have style!
    August 27 02:04 AM
  • Deviant. I checked out their last album when people were high rating it and doing the whole "it's not just standard deathcore/djent/whatever stuff" so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And yeah, it wasn't bad at all - but by the same token, not amazing or anything
    August 21 05:21 AM
  • Eloriaz Agreed man, and nice to "meet" you! I already knew you were really into futurepop so that's why I sent you a message. I'm big on synthpop/New Wave/80s electronics so the next logical step for me was futurepop. Looking forward to discuss further with you on Sputnik ;)
    August 18 05:45 PM
  • Eloriaz Yep, it's the Montreal show and I'm from there, born there and lived there :) I'm one of the few French-Canadians on Sputnik ;P
    August 18 05:35 PM
  • Eloriaz Thanks ^_^ And yes I am going to the Delta Machine show on September 3rd! Damn, that must have been a hard choice if both are your favorites. But I will post a little something in the Delta Machine thread after I return: how it was, what they played, which songs they played best, etc. so you can have a general idea of this tour ;)
    August 18 05:21 PM
  • Eloriaz VNV Nation is the only band I know. I've listened to their first three albums (I go chronologically) so I'm at "Futureperfect" now =) I really like their personality and I love that hybrid EBM sound which isn't exactly trance nor exactly techno. "Saviour" on "Empires" is MENTAL! I've read a little bit about, it really seems to be right up my alley too! I will start there. BTW, are you going to see Depeche early September? ^_^
    August 18 05:00 PM
  • Eloriaz Cheers, I really appreciate it :)
    August 18 04:51 PM
  • Eloriaz Mr. lego bloc! I would like some futurepop recs please =) also I have a question: is there a clear distinction between EBM and futurepop? I'm kind of lost on this. thanks!
    August 18 05:15 AM
  • Acanthus Yeah I could dig an entire album in the same vein
    August 9 09:32 PM
  • Acanthus Celldweller and Varien team up, kinda like CD's first album but with more 80's synth

  • AfricanCowboy Hey do you have Tripwires- Spacehopper album by any chance?
    July 25 02:46 PM
  • Baphomet It's really been quite a while, bro! How have you been? I see you're staying true to your roots and keeping the ratings terrible. No wonder the necrodogg guy thought you'd be a great victim ;)
    July 18 09:51 PM
  • iamSeraph I love you dude, but a 2 for Bring Me Solace's 'The Sightless Inquisition'? .D Sure, the production is quite bad, but these songs are four years old and complete DIY recordings. Technically these dudes know exactly how and what to play. So please give it another spin someday or maybe reconsider your rating. 'Poor' is - in all honesty - not the right term for the music that is presented to us here. Thx bro .)

  • ResidentNihilist I feel that it reached it's peak about mid-nineties with the speed with bands like Sarcofago etc. and it's stayed there ever since. How do you feel about that? Also sorry this message took so long, I've just been preoccupied with other things and only had time to leave a couple of comments here and there.
    July 12 07:22 PM
  • ResidentNihilist I think metal just needs a good kick up the arse creatively etc. What do you think on the whole subject of their being a dead end in creativity in music? Also how do you feel about the nostalgia being too overbearing in the metal community and do you ever finding it annoying? Also I can see where you're going with the whole pop becoming more synthesised etc. as electronic music is in someways the newest form of classical music but I don't totally agree with you about metal getting faster.
    July 12 07:19 PM
  • ResidentNihilist In reality though, most osdm is just good with a few really bright sparks same as at any other time. Tbh I sometimes wonder how much this nostalgic attitude is due to the idea that there's no where to go with metal in terms of genre and that all creativity is dried up. Personally I think this a load of bull as Samuel Butler was saying the same thing in the seventeenth century, just before the industrial revolution and they produced a whole sleur of writing.
    July 12 07:16 PM
  • ResidentNihilist Yeah you're probably right in regards to the balance of shred versus songwriting. I remember Keith Huckins once said that the scene is always the same; a lot of s*** with a few gems hear and there. It does make you wonder how much nostalgia has glossed over a good many turds. I mean you only have to look at Sputnik's and indeed the metal community's attitude towards osdm. Anything pre-93 is revered as a classic and anything post is mostly considered s***.
    July 12 07:12 PM
  • ResidentNihilist But yeah I think to be more accurate I felt that sometime's the word tech is used erroneously more than overused thinking about it. Wanted to ask though, do you feel that the whole shred syndrome is going to overwhelm most other music genres? What do you see happening with it in the future? Also sorry about crashing your shoutbox. I would write it as all one message but this bloody thing doesn't give me the space.
    July 8 04:14 PM
  • ResidentNihilist ut yeah that's ironic with Death's final album as that's the one I felt where Chuck was finally up to his reputation. Scott Burn's actually did a good production job on this one despite Chuck's guitar tone being brittle as hell and the melodies did seem to genuinelly powerful. It was let down by the fact that a lot of the songs felt half-finished and Richard Christie's drumming was a bit too flabby in style really. He spends too much time soloing and too little supporting the music.
    July 8 04:11 PM
  • ResidentNihilist He talked a lot about how jazz fusion has become dulled down due to it becoming about instrumental wankery and I agree with him on the matter. It's easy to see how people like Allan Holdsworth unintentionally inspired this and then others like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai to run the genre into the ground. The tech death issue just feels like a continuation/extention of this unfortunately. Ah well.
    July 8 04:07 PM
  • ResidentNihilist It's interesting though when you look at how the latest bunch of tech-death bands seems to concentrate on technicality over musicality and how many fans seem to think this is a new thing (in the last decade or so) but really it seems to be a continuation of mainstream tastes are overwhelming different genres, most notably jazz-fusion. I remember reading an article by Alex Skolnick recently about how shred is overtaking everything in music recently.
    July 8 04:03 PM
  • ResidentNihilist Tbh I've always felt that while the hate for Necrophagist is justified it isn't so much with Obscura. I mean they're unoriginal as all hell but the songs are catchy, coherent, actually surprisingly melodic and with a tasteful, albeit sometimes over the top, sense of theatrical technicality. They aren't that bad compared to say Spawn of Possession post-Cabinet or Brain Drill.
    July 8 04:00 PM
  • ResidentNihilist Death's Symbolic, for example, just feels awkward in many ways as if Chuck is trying to appeal to the melody while still maintaining the technical elements and not being able to decide between the two. Tbh that's a problem I found with most of Death's discog bar the first one. Have you ever found that problem in any of the music you've listened to? Also do you think 'technical' is becoming something of an overused term? As I've seen it misused so many times before.
    July 6 07:26 PM
  • ResidentNihilist Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. A good chorus pretty much trumps Christian Muenzer shredding off 3 millions notes per second. Which is the reason why I find Peter Tagtren's bands far better than any of the modern tech death that's come out in the last decade or so (Gorguts being the obvious exception). I found that technicality can be a more of a hinderance in music than a blessing.
    July 6 07:22 PM
  • ResidentNihilist bloc, how far do you value technicality in the music you listen? Also how far do you stack it up against how well a song flows? Reason I ask is that there does seem to be a staple for the more technical bands on this site, whatever the genre (punk, metal, rock etc.) and I was wondering how you percieved it as you seem to be more balanced when it comes to looking at the music you listen to.

  • crabroast22 Haha nope :) But hey! Each to their own and all that. I'm probably slightly biased because I've been a big fan since Discovery. I do however think they've always been known to take risks and experiment. Nice to meet you anyway!
    May 28 09:00 PM
  • Metalstyles But yeah, I do agree with you that there haven't been many albums that sound remarkably fresh or out of the ordinary in a spectacular way. On the other hand, I've always appreciated bands who can churn out quality music despite staying inside the confines of their genre. At the end of the day, stuff that sounds familiar can be just as great as stuff that sounds fresh, it all comes down to execution.
    May 24 05:56 AM
  • Metalstyles Yeah I get what you're saying. I haven't had much time for music listening this year, so I have only been able to check out a limited number of albums. I have dug most of them, though, which is uncanny actually, even when taking into account my often-lax standards haha. The sad part is that I may not have the time for true grower albums this year. I'll have my two months of freedom in July and August, as I don't think I'll be working this summer, but after that I'll probably be all busy again.
    May 24 05:53 AM
  • Metalstyles The guy in Dagoba has great screaming ability, but when it comes to his clean vocals, I can definitely see how people wouldn't dig them. He's not a great singer for sure. Also, the two new Dagoba tracks sounded too much like the last album, and while that was a really cool record, I don't want a vol. 2 of it. And I agree about Hacride, the new album really can be considered safe. It' musically proficient, but doesn't exactly offer anything fresh.
    May 23 03:07 PM
  • Metalstyles ...but I still think that both of them can do even better. Hord already made quite a leap forward with their latest and I hope they continue on that momentum, but Hacride easily have the potential for something grand imo (Back To Where You've Never Been was cool and all, but I really wanted that album to wow me and it didn't).
    May 23 10:42 AM
  • Metalstyles So, the new Hord's pretty cool. Nothing too spectacular, but the guitar tone is pretty ace and the opening trio of songs (counting in the intro) really rip. It could be a bit more exciting in general, but they play a style that I can listen to on any given day of the week, so I'm definitely not disappointed. Thanks for the heads-up, man! Also, I'm staying hopeful that the new Dagoba record really comes at me with something special. Both Hord and Hacride have released solid records this year...
    May 23 10:36 AM
  • crabroast22 Your comment on Daft Punk's new album just oozes with coolness.
    May 20 10:26 AM
  • Apollo No kidding man, Detroit is pretty messed up

  • Apollo I was up in Scarborough last week working. Kingston area. Naw man I'm heading to Windsor though so basically the butthole of Canada. Detroit is sketchy but my wifes family is there and we wanted a change from boring ass Kitchener.
    May 17 11:10 PM
  • Apollo Good to hear from you too brother. Got lots of stuff in transition right now but confident it will all work out in the end. Still in Scarberia?
