Theresulting disc, Get Some, was released in 1997and immediately began receiving favorablenotices.GetSome is adynamic, hardcore metal offering that exhibits the punk and metal roots of Snot members Strait,Doling, bassistJohnFahnestock, drummer Jamie Miller, and guitarist Sonny Mayo.Snot began touring in support of their newrecord andpartlydue to the factthatthey were so very well received within the community of rock musicians, they were givena slot onthe1998 Ozzfest tourwhere Strait(among other dubious accomplishments no doubt) was arrested in Mansfield, MA,forindecentexposure after anonstage encounter with amember of Limp Bizkit's touring entourage. While Snot was runningamokall overAmerica, theirdebut wasn't getting quite as warm areception as the band and their label would have liked, andaftertheUniversal-Polygrammerger, their future with the new company seemedto be in jeopardy as many lesser and newartistswerebeing cut free fromtheir contracts. Undaunted, the group continued to work on newmusic while pursuingwhateverbusinessand recordingopportunities they found available to them. It was during this tough time for the bandthatStrait waskilled in acar accident. On December 11, 1998 a truck struck the singer's car on the 101 freeway near SantaBarbara.Straitwas 30years old. Alsokilled in the accident was Strait's dog Dobbs, a boxer that appeared on the cover of GetSome.FahnestockandDoling tookthe tracks that they had been working on with Strait at the time of his death and had friendsofthe singercome by(Korn'sJonathan Davis, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, and Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, among others) and laydowntheirown vocalsas a tribute to thedeceased. The subsequent Immortal Records release was called Straight Up. Thisrecord isasymbol of thetremendous outpouring of griefand sympathy -- especially within the L.A. new metal andalternativemusiccommunity -- thatwas indeed massive and sustained. Thevigilance of fans and concerted effort to sustain hislegacy byotherartists affirmedwhat many close to Strait had known for a longtime: thatthe singer had incredible magnetismand spirit, andthat while hewasn't always an angel, he managed to inspire and entertain people. Thesewere certainly amongtheman'sgoals, which heobviously accomplished during his lifetime. After the release of Strait Up, Fahnestock joinedAmenandDolingsigned on withSoulfly. « hide |
