Jeez, look at that cover. The grim reaper with his scythe pointing out to the ocean, pretty weird but cool as hell. Now look at the title, Hatebreeder? Hatebreeder is the second album from the critically acclaimed Children of Bodom. Fusing a strong power metal influence with melodic death metal influences. This band sure are a treat to listen to. One could say the band’s main point comes from singer/guitarist Alexi “Wildchild" Laiho who comes up with COB’s concepts. One interesting part I liked about this album is that the keyboards and the guitar leads intertwine with each other making it a very interesting listen indeed.
Now a days the new fans are drawn in by Are You Dead Yet but listening to this you could make the assumption that this isn’t the same band. This is before the big change and is probably the band’s best effort. This album is more focused on power metal with the keyboards playing a big role on making the atmosphere that all the songs hold. The key point in COB’s music is the parts that they make use of the keyboards and the guitars effectively making them as one almost. Alexi’s vocals are dark here just using death metal-like vocals. All the more in making COB so unique I say. This is considered the strongest album in their discography with live favourites such as Silent Night, Bodom Night and Downfall. To be honest, there is not a poor album on here at all and you just get the best feeling ever listening to this band. This is not just for fans of Bodom, I recommend this to anyone in metal or even rock as this is an essential purchase.
The drums are really strong on here I noticed making good use of the double bass and other things. Like other Bodom records, the bass still doesn’t do much and is sadly the only thing that could drag them down. Alexi has a deep growl but it is debatable if his clean or growled vocals are better (discuss in the comments!). The guitars never falter, one guitar would be doing some basic rhythm chords while the guitar and keyboard would be going at each other. It’s great to witness this. The keyboard doesn’t just do these cool lead parts they also make some beautiful sounds changing the noise of the keyboard including a lovely harp sound (listen to Bed Of Razors to understand).
Now for the songs, my most obvious favourite would be Silent Night, Bodom Night which will stick in your head for ages. As soon as it starts you know you’re in for a treat. It keeps a fast-pace right through until the chorus which sounds very heartfelt and the way it’s structured just makes it a prefect listen. It isn’t even epic or anything going out at three minutes, twelve seconds. That isn’t all with songs such as Hatebreeder, Bed Of Razors and Downfall, you know this is a grand record. Every song plays a part on this, no stupid fillers or stupid songs to bring it down. Get this album now even if you don’t like metal!
+ Pros
Everything:
The guitar work is of a high standard
Every song is above average
A total listening experience
- Cons
Again, the bass could still do more but other than that, nothing.

| | | well, i wouldnt call them clean. maybe not quite as extreme as before, but not clean. i associate clean with melodic singing, not screaming/shouting/growling.
| | | Meh, it's what I meant.

Review could've been a little more detailed. Also, the bass does quite a bit, albeit it's rather hard to hear. I'm a bassist myself, and, having done a few CoB covers with friends, I can safely say that Bodom's bassist is far from untalented.
This is easily CoB's best album.
| | | I tried not to describe the songs too much for this review. How could I hear the bass and judge it if I'm not a bassist?

Turn on a bass boosting EQ and listen carefully before you jump to conclusions, perhaps? You don't have to be a bassist to pick out the bass, you just need to listen carefully (especially with the way Bodom mixes bass).

It's a schtick.
As for this, I find it their worst...I got Follow The Reaper first, and this is basically that album, just worse.
