| Summary: A strong start and stellar middle make Chevelle's sophomore attempt "Wonder What's Next" one of the angriest and most spirited hard rocks albums in recent history. |
1 of 1 thought this review was well written
Wonder What's Next, Chevelle's sophomore album, contains the most ferocity, anger, and passion one could ever pack into an album. It is the reason hardcore, screamo music started to make sense to me as a music style. The band should be remembered for this album for a long time to come as they truly unleashed everything they had for this.
The first few tracks on the album set the tone that they surprisingly keep for the entire track list. "Family System" will I'm sure be their best opening song forever, after hearing the most recent opening tracks like "Antisaint" and "Sleep Apnea". It is a song about the breaking apart of families, and the anger they feel resonates right from the moment the guitars lurch forward and begin the album with a bang. It is complemented by a slightly quieter, but no less angrier song "Comfortable Liar". This song, while catchy, speaks about those people who cannot help but lie to everyone, and thrive on it.
The album then brings in many of the singles that made this band well-known. In particular, "Send the Pain Below" ends off very nicely in the bridge of the song with lyrics such as "I can't feel my chest..." that speak to the pain we feel when we hold in our problems. "The Red", easily their most popular song, somehow manages to make whining-type lyrics amazingly powerful and memorable.
The third quarter of the album is by far their strongest effort on the CD. "Wonder What's Next" is in my opinion their angriest-sounding song ever, almost matching, but definitely complementing the achievement of the single before it without outdoing it. "Don't Fake This" is my personal recommendation and favorite song. It is about how people throw away who they are so easily in today's society. It starts off so beautifully (in hard rock terms), with a wonderful medley of bass, drums, and guitar. I hear it in my sleep it's so beautiful. And while the song starts off softer than usual, that temporary serenity is completely forgotten by the chorus as he yells it out so perfectly that it might be the epitome of what a perfect scream should be. "Forfeit" another one of my personal favorites on the album is a mockery of those who go to clubs, concerts, and venues looking for fights. It serves as a fantastic mosh-pit song.
The only reason this album even lost points with me was its finale. "An Evening with El Diablo" and "One Lonely Visitor" are shockingly weak album finishers. While the latter song is very heart-felt, I found the idea of the softer songs ending the album to be pointless. There is bias here, as I have unfortunately never truly been a fan of Chevelle's softer, acoustic guitar songs. These two songs however do not hinder the album from being one of the most memorable hard rock post-grunge albums in history.
Recommended Songs:
Family System
Comfortable Liar
Don't Fake This
Forfeit (for those who don't require a song to have a very deep and intellectual meaning)

Decent review. Few things I noticed though:
"The band should be forever for this album as they truly unleashed everything they had for this."
"with a wonderful medley of of bass"
Fix those things and it will be solid, couple awkward moments here and there though.

fromtheinside will love you whenever he comes back to the site.
But, yeah, there's a lot of spelling and grammar issues with this review. I'll post some of those in a sec.
Also, I would rethink your summary:
"A strong start and stellar middle make Chevelle's sophomore attempt "Wonder What's Next" one of the angriest and most spirited hard rocks albums in recent history and define what it means have an emo-spirit."
I see what you were trying to say, but emo-spirit? Change that to: "Chevelle's sophomore album is one of the angriest and most spirited hard rock albums in recent history." Still a bit fanboyish, but looks better.
Also, this is sort-of track-by-track (except you left out a couple), but without enough description. It would be better to give an overview of the album and highlight specific tracks to give examples of strengths and weaknesses.
Also, the review is pretty fanboyish in some lines like this: "Wonder What's Next, Chevelle's sophomore album, contains the most ferocity, anger, and passion one could ever pack into an album."
I won't pos or neg yet, but you need to look this over more carefully.

Thanks for the input guys! I realized after I should have read that over a few more times, but it's purpose remains that it was simply my first mock trial at a review, I appreciate it.
