'Death be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful Art Not So''
Children of Bodom Follow the Reaper
Children of Bodom are from Espoo, Finland, about 10 km from their capital Helsinki. Children of Bodom was found at the end of 1997 when their debut album 'Something Wild' was released. Before that the band name was 'Inearthed'.
The Band:
Alexi Laiho - Lead Guitar / Vocals
Alexander Kuoppala - Guitar
Janne Warman - Keyboard
Jaska Raatikainen - Drums
Henkka Blacksmith Bass
The reason I am doing this album is because I believe that the last review just didnt do the album justice. I am going to try and make a better review than the last one.
Just like the rest of my reviews thus far, this will be reviewed track by track.
1. Follow the Reaper
The verse has some excellent keyboard and guitar work. They just seem as though they work as one, and thats what makes Bodom so special. The breakdown guitar work is top notch, and it sounds like something from Hatebreeder.
The rest of the song is the same until we reach the solos. If this is the first Children of Bodom song you have ever heard, you are in for a treat. The keyboards come first with incredibly fast speed. What makes it so amazing is that Janne does it with one hand! After that is over we come to a shred solo by Alexi that blows you away as well. Then the song ends, and its a great opener to a promising album.
4.5/5
2. Bodom After Midnight
A quick drum intro takes us into another riff driven song by the Bodom boys. The chorus is the coolest part of this song, the riff filled with pinch harmonics sounds great. Alexis vocal work has improved greatly from their last two albums, and you can tell in this song especially. Then we reach another great keyboard solo. Its not as fast as the last one, but fits the song perfectly. Just like the last song, there is a guitar solo right after, but its not as great as the last one. Then we have a chorus, and then the song ends.
3.5/5
3. Children of Decadence
This is the best song off of this album, and possibly Children of Bodoms best song to date. The opening guitar riff is one of the coolest things I have heard in a very long time. I think what makes this song so great is the way Alexi delivers his vocals in the song. They seem to fit a lot better than in most other songs he has made. The lyrics are great to listen to if you want to get pumped up. There seems to be two choruses in this song, and the second part is what I think is the coolest part in the song. The song runs through the same song structure another time, and then we reach the solos. The keyboard solo does not take speed to the limit, but it goes on for a long time and its probably the only keyboard solo you can headbang to. We then reach another masterful guitar solo, then another keyboard solo, and then they end. The keyboard/guitar dueling is what Bodom is best known for, and this shows that quite well. Then there is a killer riff to end the song. Amazing, simply amazing.
5/5
4. Everytime I Die
This seems to be a favorite among fans of this band, and I can understand why. The riffs are very heavy, heavier than the riffs in the last three songs. The verse is filled with down tuned guitars with haunting keyboards in the back. Alexis vocals are really low and sound a lot like a black metal band. Its a good song overall, but I prefer Children of Decadence over this song.
4/5
5. Mask of Sanity
Starts out with a short and cool keyboard intro to get you headbanging into another Bodom riff driven song of mayhem. Alexi also has an impressive opening scream in the intro. The pounding drums and super fast guitars remind me of a Slayer song, in a way. The chorus is the highlight of the song, with the keyboards and guitars playing in unison. There is also a metalcore-like breakdown in this song. Bodom knows how to make great songs, but it wont blow you away.
3.5/5
6. Taste of My Scythe
The opening sample is incredibly creepy; make sure you pay attention to what the guy is saying. Hes talking about mutilating the innocent, pretty rough stuff. The intro sounds a lot like Mask of Sanity, but we can look beyond that. During the verse the keyboards provide a creepy atmosphere that makes the song better than it would be with just the guitars playing. There is another keyboard solo, which I personally enjoy more than the guitar solos. There is another duel between Janne and Alexi, which is what people seem to enjoy most about Bodom. Its another good solid song to listen to.
4/5
7. Hate Me!
I dont give a f*ck if you hate me!
That one line seems to be one of Bodoms most famous quotes in any of their songs. If you ask me, it sounds like it could have come out of a nu-metal song. The vocals in this song annoy me at times, but the keyboards in the back make up for it. You can actually also hear the bass do a decent fill in this song at one point, listen carefully. Its an average song at best, and probably the weakest song on the album.
3/5
8. Northern Comfort
Now, were back to the good stuff. The opening riff is great, and the verse is great too. The ominous keyboards with the soloing guitar on the right speaker are great. You can tell from the beginning that this is a major improvement from the last few songs that you have been listening to. Unfortunately, the song is fairly short, thats the only downside. The solo and interlude are great, definitely better than Hate Me! The guitars and keyboards do the same crazy fast part at the same time. Thats something that takes a whole lot of skill. This is a great song, one of the best on the album.
4.5/5
9. Kissing the Shadows
Youve got another solid Bodom track coming at you, but it seems to sound like all the past songs put together. Theres nothing wrong with it, its just that by the time youve reached this part in the album youve already heard everything that this song has to offer. You have your nice, fun riffs. You have your crazy keyboards, and a solid rhythm section backing all of this up. If you listen to this song by itself, its great. If you listen to it in the order that the album comes, its repetitive.
4/5
10. Hellion
This is the bonus track on the album. It starts off with ten seconds of samples and then the song begins with slow power chords, double bass, and improvising bass. The bass part during this part is rather impressive. The vocals in this song are more evil than in the past songs, and there are quick samples of a demons voice also. The songs really short, but the end solo is fantastic. Its a pretty good song to end the album, but ending it with Kissing the Shadows would have been better.
4/5
Songs on this album you can't live without:
Follow the Reaper
Children of Decadence
Northern Comfort
This album seems to be getting a lot of attention from metal fans, and I hope that you found this review helpful. This album is going to get a high rating from me because I believe that this is one of Children of Bodoms better releases and every song has something impressive in it. There arent many dull moments, and when there are they dont last long. I imagine that Children of Bodom is going to be the future of metal, and this album shows why.

I would agree with that statement except for Hate Me! The song just sounds like it was thrown together in about an hour.

I love that song!!! Just listen to the guitar/keyboard interplay. A little more simplistic than the other songs, but it had some great harmonizing.

Good review, however. You could have added the meaning of "Bodom", to your introduction about the band. It comes from, Lake Bodom, which is a lake near where they are from. There was a camping trip where three people were murdered at the lake. The fourth in psychological treatment since. This took place june,4,1960. The fourth person who lived, was charged with the muders in 2004. This is were the band name comes from.
Great band, best album would be Hatebreeder

I agree with Shattered Future, this probably is there best album. Every song on it is brilliant.

This is the only CD I have from COB and it's absolutely great. I plan on buying Hatecrew Death Roll next.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
you'd be better off getting hatebreeder first or something wild
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Why do you say that? Just curious. I've heard Needled 24/7 and Angels Don't Kill from HCDR. I really love the music from those two songs but the singing isn't that great IMO.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
HCDR is a bit heavier, and hatebreeder sounds more like Follow the Reaper. So if you want a bit heavy fo for HCDR which takes some time to get into. but if you more of the same then get Hatebreeder

This album is equal to Hatebreeder as a starting album. I really don't recommend Something Wild, Hate Crew Deathroll, or Are You Dead Yet.
| | | Album Rating: 5
This album is better than hatebreeder. There I finally admit it. There is not a bad song on this. It's amazing from start to finish with the title track FTR to start and I believe kissing the shadows ends it.
