1 of 2 thought this review was well written
Reading preliminary information on this German 80's glam-meets-00's "emo" outfit, I read a lot of comparisons to Disney-pop music acts that this band has little in common with other than an apparent shared goal in the area of attracting female preteens to their music (and God forbid a band might want to make money). Instead, I was somewhat (but not hugely) surprised to find that Tokio Hotel are indeed a rock band, albeit a safe one, putting out a real rock record, albeit a bland one.
In case you're a bit behind, this band has already reached the top of the charts in countries all across Europe and Australia. So supposedly that means they're guaranteed to be big here, they're the "next big thing," I mean they're already huge everywhere else, and AFI remixed their single so I mean it's already getting hyped up, blah blah blah. Whatever.
Lead singer Bill Kaulitz(notable for his girly-boy good looks and crazy haircut, which resembles something like a porcupine or some other weird rodent-type thingy) is not at all a technically proficient singer. Actually, he doesn't have a lot of charisma either. What he does have is an ability to come up with some attractive bubblegum melodies that get stuck in your head, like the chorus to "Read, Set, Go!", the first single here in the U.S. (it didn't chart.) Admittedly, the song is exhilarating while you listen to it, mostly thanks to big production and the aforementioned melody. The band does know hot to rock out, albeit in a less-than-original way (wow, a quiet three single note verse followed by a big power-chord chorus-- who-da-thunk-it!). But it's about as memorable as any Scorpions song not entitled "Rock You Like A Hurricane" (this band is a huge fan of the Scorps.) And about the same could be said of the rest of the album, with the sole exception of "Scream," which includes a simple but raucous guitar riff that will have you replaying the song over and over. And it's songs like that which demonstrate that this band does have potential.
The rockers on this album get extra points due to the excitement factor. The problem is that a lot of the songs end up being whiny power ballads, such as international hit "Monsoon." I don't see a single thing special in the song.
Then again, I might be totally missing something because the lyrics, translated from their original German, make about as much sense as drummer Tom Kaulitz's dreadlocks and gangsta fashion sense. "My room is cold, it’s making me insane" croons Sonic the Hedgehog. "But now the moment seems to have come, I see the dark clouds coming up again." It makes me want to learn German so I can go back and hear if they were better before, or if this band really is just that bad lyrically.
Trend-hunters and taste-makers everywhere are assuring me that this band is going to be "huge" here in the U.S. but I'm not so convinced yet. That will be determined by the 14 year old Dyed-and-Straightened Hair Club, based on the all-important criteria of whether or not their one-liners are Facebook-worthy (and honestly, the language barrier between us and these guys makes "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" read like Shakespeare); otherwise, they may just largely fall to the wayside before they even start, just as so many predicted "will-be-huge"'rs have done since the Beatles. Either way, the band will then stand at a crossroads as they prepare for Round Two: will they solidify their female preteen fan base with further exercises in singles-oriented parent-friendly rock, or expound on their obvious talent further by improving their technical and lyrical abilities and become a dangerous, respectable force in the world of rock n' roll? Basically, will they make a lot of money and get famous and watch tons of girls throw themselves at them, or impress nerdy music critics?
Well... What Would the Jonas Brothers Do?

| | | Yeah he seriously does need to give up though. I'm not leaving. Like seriously dude. If I get tired of making new "Ilikemusic" screennames (it'll be a while) then I'll just make a totally new one eventually, lay low for a while and then suddenly after you worship my reviews I'll reveal myself. So seriously Jom. Just give up. I know you don't like me or whatever. But live with it.

| | | ^Believe it or not, a lot of the girlies seem to be really into him. But if they're into the rocker girl look, why not like someone way hotter like Hayley Williams or something.
