| Summary: It's the birth of an amazing band, you can't hate on it too much. |
1 of 4 thought this review was well written
Nobody can honestly listen to this album and think the songs are amazing. When you listen to this album, you listen to it as a long time Metallica fan would. Though the sound may not be great, it still holds a special place in your heart, because it's part of what gave Metallica their start.
There's nothing terribly different about the tracks on this demo, compared to the material on Kill 'Em All. The main differences come with the obviously poorer quality of the sound, the vocals, and the guitar solos. I'm not going to go through each song on the album and write its own review for the song, there just isn't enough to say, so I'll point out the differences of this album.
Throughout the album James attempts a vocal style, in which he holds notes for longer amounts of time, in opposed to his rougher form of singing in later years. This is apparent in each of the songs, especially in the chorus. Honestly it's difficult to even think of it as James singing, due to how immature it sounds in comparison to later albums. Unfortunately it gives all the songs a less intense feeling in opposed to his almost Ted Nugent vocal style in Kill Em All. Out of all the tracks on this album, he has probably the best sound on Motorbreath, due to him using a little bit more of his lower range and agressive style.
The other obvious difference about the songs on this album compared to Kill 'Em All, is the fact that Dave Mustaine has different solos than Kirk Hammett. It's difficult to actually say which solos are better, since all of us are used to hearing the solos Kirk layed down, anything Mustaine does will sound foreign. The main difference I can hear is that Mustaine uses a little warmer sounding style of solos compared to Kirk, which on one hand gives the songs kind of an interesting sound, but on the flip side it kind of takes away some of the harshness of the songs. Kirk tends to use a higher pitched guitar squeal sound, more often than Dave does.
The Mechanix is the only track on this album that doesn't appear on Kill 'Em All. Obviously the song was changed to The Four Horsemen for the Kill 'Em All, though Dave Mustaine did use the song on the Megadeth debut album "Killing Is My Buisness...And Buisness Is Good!", even though the song is even a bit different on that album as well. I don't care much for the lyrics in The Mechanix, and prefer the lyrics in The Four Horsemen. I also prefer the longer version of the song The Four Horsemen offers, since The Mechanix is a couple minutes shorter.
All in all the main reason to get this album is to round out a collection of Metallica demos. It's very similar to the No Life Till Leather demo, though the sound quality is a little better on this demo...at least in the versions I have of each.

Terrible Sound-Off.
Digging: Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
| | | actually as a sound-off it's quite satisfactory.
as a review it's seriously lacking.
Digging: Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
| | | This is definitely the shortest review I've seen, even shorter than some bollocks iamrobots would put up.
Digging: Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon
| | | I was just kidding honestly. I've had a few too many. And my reviews have been terrible.

| | | It just needs a bit more description on the songs. The only description is a comparison to the other demo you mention. Considering it's just four songs, I can see an adequate length being only a couple paragraphs longer.
Digging: Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
| | | why would you want a descriptions of the songs?
| | | This took 30 seconds to read and isn't informative in the slightest. No mention of how Mustaine was in the band? No comment about the songs, production, feel? It also reeks of fanboyism, despite the rating. I'd neg this if I could be arsed.
Digging: Behemoth - Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond)

There is seriously not much you can even say about the demo. It's more than what was originally even here (AKA, Nothing). There's only four tracks...musically they sound just like No Life Till Leather for the most part. The only real difference is Jame's vocal style.
Digging: Orphaned Land - Mabool (The Story of the Three Sons...) | | | There is a lot more that could've been said. You didn't describe any of the instruments. The point of a review isn't to point out the differences between two albums or demos. Your supposed to describe the sound of that album and you did a pretty poor job doing that.
Digging: The Birthday Massacre - Violet

I tried to give you what the vocals were like, and what the guitar solos were like. In a demo like this...a little known demo, nobody wants to read the same things over and over again from the Kill 'Em All album, and the No Life Till Leather demo. We all know what the songs basically sound like, so I tried to describe how they are different. Nobody is going to look up Metallica material, and this be the first thing they come to. If you're listening to this demo, or looking into it, I would be willing to bet you're very familiar with Metallica's material. You'll run into the No Life Till Leather demo even before you'll find this. If this was an actual album, with fresh material, I would've described the songs in more detail. However, I personally felt it would be like beating a dead horse if I went over the same old thing with these songs. If you don't like it, I really don't care. I did what I felt was right.
