The Adicts
“Songs of Praise” Review

For those of you who don’t know the Adicts, and are fans of punk rock, boy let me tell you, you are missing out on a highly influential band. They are also obsessed with the quite odd film, A Clockwork Orange. They have the same style. Back to music, The Adicts basically were the first pop-punk band to play with street punk and hardcore bands, such as G.B.H., The Varukers, and later American Hardcore bands. Their debut album is a classic, and every punk should own it.

1 - England
The first song is one of my absolute favorite songs by The Adicts, or songs by anyone for that matter. It starts out with some weird piano, and jumps into a quick guitar riff. The vocals are catchy, and by the time the song is over, you will have yourself singing this song for a long, long time. 5/5

2 - Hurt
This is one of more mediocre songs on the album. I absolutely hated this song when I first heard it. It grew on me eventually, but that did not stop me from not being able to listen to the somewhat whiny vocals. Still, give this a listen, but it is most definetly not a highlight. 2/5

3 - Just Like Me
This is a great song to make up for the previous win. This is a quick song that makes you want to get up and move, not in a stupid moshing way, but a “F**k yeah, this kid is right, it’s a great song!” type of way. The vocals are great also, and it has some decent guitar work. You will be singing this song for a while. 4/5

4 - Tango
Once again, they follow a great song with a song you can’t stand at first. With that being said, this is not a mediocre song like “Hurt”. It seems dull and annoying at first, but it has a good guitar solo, and a cool bass line. And the vocals grow on you very quickly. So, if you find yourself pressing the skip button when this track appears, resist pressing next and give it a listen. Trust me, you will enjoy. 3/5

5 - Telepathic People
Right form the get-go, you can tell this song will be enjoyable. The intro builds up into a big verse, which bursts into a catchy chorus. The guitar part is very, very quick, and although it repeated over and over again, you just want to admire it speed, because it is a fantastic riff, probably one of the best ever written by them. 4/5

6 - Mary Whitehouse
Once again, they follow a great song up with a mediocre song. The vocals do not even sound like them, and the song is kind of slow, and does not grab your attention. With that said, I see that they did not want every song to be in-your-face punk rock, so they took a chance on more of an up-beat soft rock song. Sadly, it is not a great song. 2/5

7 - Distortion
This song starts off weird, sounds like some weird experimental stuff. Then like the title suggests, there is a lot of distortion, which works ok. Although it has a quick verse, the chorus does not live up to what I thought it would be: the verse is building up, and then the chorus is just them chanting “Distortion” every few seconds. Does not impress, but is not bad. 3/5

8 - Get Adicted
Here is the Adicts! This is pure Adicts punk rock. This song has nothing special instrumentally, but the chorus vocals are extraordinarily catchy. You will find yourself singing this blazing fast chorus all day. This is one of the three best songs on the album. 5/5

9 -Viva La Revolution
Hooray! The first time on the album that there are two fantastic songs in a row! This song you may have heard from “Tony Hawks Underground” video game, or whatever it is called. This has a catchy bass line and vocals. Most punks know this song whether they know the Adicts or not. This is definitely a top three song. 5/5

10 - Calling Calling
This song is very unlike other songs on the album. All songs so far, (besides Mary Whitehouse) have consisted of power chords, and… that’s it. This song ditches the normal punk rock power chords and blazing fast choruses for a slower and more soothing song. Unlike Mary Whitehouse, they succeed on this song. It has a bass line that strays from the root notes, and does its own thing. It has two great guitar solos, and two great guitar parts. It uses ska-type chords, without an actual ska-rhythm. And the vocals are as always, great. This is the best song on the album, and the best song ever by them. It is a piece of art. 5/5

11 - In the Background
This song starts off with a soft guitar part which you can’t hear much. It almost sounds as if it is “in the background” (ha-ha?) It is a good song that has a bass and drum driven verse, and a cool sounding guitar in the intro/chorus. It is a decent song, which is not known thought of much, but after all is following Calling Calling. 3/5

12 - Dynasty
This has a chillingly creepy intro, but jumps into a bass driven verse, which sounds nice. The Chorus is one of the best on the album. It picks up pace in the chorus, and has a cool riff by the guitar. 4/5

13 - Peculiar Music
This is a weird song, in a good way. It has a cool guitar intro and verse. The Chorus is different, but in a good way, again. Instead of getting quicker and more upbeat, this chorus kinds of dies, and sounds cool when the vocals rise. 4/5

14 - Numbers
This song is kind of bland, and sounds like the rest of the CD. The musicianship is normal here, nothing special, besides a nice little solo here. The vocals and lyrics are good though. It talks about not wanting to be like everyone else, and criticizes people who do. It is a good song. 4/5

15 - Sensitive
This is a fantastic song that starts with a cool bass line which drives the song. The guitar comes in every few beats. The bass rises during the chorus which sounds awesome. This chorus is short and sweet, which is the band just screaming “You’re so sensitive, sensitive, sensitive, sensitive!” Not a highlight, but definetly a song to listen to. 4/5

16 - Songs of Praise
This starts off differently than the others. It is a good change. Thye all are humming together, and then… BAM!!! It bursts into the verse with a normal Adicts cool guitar part and a normal bass and drum part. The chorus is probably one of the best on the album, if not the best. The vocals are sung beautifully, and the two guitar parts sound good, and the bass not following root notes is also a good change. 5/5

17 - Sound of Music
This is a Very weird song. It starts off sounding like a crappy 80’s song, in my opinion. The verse fails to impress, it is bland and boring. The chorus is quite catchy, but sounds like a weird keyboard is in it. I have nothing against the use of keyboards; I just don’t feel it fits in this part of the album. 3/5

How much do you delve into Classic Punk Tom? From the Adicts, I recommend 27 and Joker in the Pack. However, they aren't nearly as good as this release.

yeah it is great. I think it is easily their best, ad some of their later albums do not live up to this (which is understandable as this is great). This and Sound of Music are easily punk classics.

"Get Addicted" served it's purpose because after hearing it I got addicted to the Adicts. Ah, the alliteration is killing me.
