Hearts of Black Science is one of the most original electronica acts in the business today. Revolutionary and provocative, this band is unafraid to be influenced by several different genres of music. This gives their sound a unique edge no other band can mimic. Starting out just last year in 2005, Hearts of Black Science has made gigantic strides in this short period of time. With 2 self-produced EPs, a spectacular professional-quality video, and a live video shot at their first gig in Gothenburg, Sweden, this band is well on their way to success.
This EP starts out with the scintillating Empty City Lights
. A glorious track that showcases Tomas Almgren's ability to make synthesizers and effects really captivate and engage the listener, without ever seeming repetitive. Daniel Anghede's vocals and guitars shine on this track as well, and the song seems to reveal new layers with each listen. This is also the band's video track, and could be described as the single of the album.
Next comes Snowfall
. This is a truly beautiful song. One of my favorites on the EP, it compares the loneliness of lost love to winter. A largely melancholic song that also is very hopeful at the same time. The vocals manage to convey sadness without becoming draggy, and the synth intro is absolutely divine.
After that comes Driverlights
. This particular track took me awhile to get used to, it is rather a departure from some of the older material, with a more poppy beat. However, this song has grown on me so much that it is now my favorite song, by any artist. The intro is raw vocals with minimalistic guitar, and the synths pick up about 15 seconds into the song. This is definitely the greatest vocal work on the EP.
is the song that first attracted me to this band. The effects on this song are by far the best I’ve heard, they are beautiful. One of the darkest tracks Hearts of Black Science has done, and very powerful. Even though I have probably listened to this track over 1000 times, it still has the power to make me pause and appreciate the haunting atmosphere it creates. This is a song that can make a bad day brighter.
Finishing up the EP is In a Park
. This is definitely the darkest song the band has done so far. Similar in some ways to Revolvers, but every song on this EP creates a different feeling. The vocals closer to the end of the track is the best part, emotional yet somehow restrained.
Hearts of Black Science is an affecting and special band. Every song is pure and fulfilling, leaving the listener longing for more.
