Review Summary: Overall this album is in my opinion amazing. This set the Pumpkins to go further and record the amazing Siamese Dream. Pick this album up if you havent already. Truely a mind-blowing album.
1991 was a great year for music. You had bands like Nirvana with Nevermind, Pearl Jam with Ten, and Soundgarden with Badmotorfinger, but theres one band that most probably most wouldn't think of-Smashing Pumpkins. Gish was the Pumpkins debut and the only thing I can say about this album: incredible. Gish was my first Pumpkins album and I was extremely impressed. This album is probably the most hard rocking of the Pumpkins career, and doesn't fail to impress. The guitar work, drum work, bass, and vocals all tie so well together in this album. Heres the lowdown:
1) I am one-Smashing Pumpkins have a tendency to have awesome openers and this one is amazing. The guitar melodies and vocals are so catchy and the drums are set on killzone mode in this song. With some amazing guitar as well, this is an awesome song that sets you up for the rest of the album. 5/5
2) Siva-Similar to "I am one", "Siva" is another hard rocking song that amazes. Billys vocals come in strong on this album and the guitar work is yet again superb. Amazing song. 5/5
3) Rhinoceros-Now the album turns around with a slower song. "Rhinoceros", is a slow mellow song that kicks in about halfway through. The vocals are soft and melodic and the guitar riff is slow and catchy. Once more the guitar work is fantastic with an incredible guitar solo by Billy Corgan. Fantastic song. 5/5
4) Bury Me-I love this song. The driving bass keeps the song moving while Billy screams, "Bury me in love." There's a lot of changes in the song which keeps the listener involved all the way through. ONCE again the guitar work is magnificent. The solo is an eye opener O.O 5/5
5) Crush-Now the album takes a slower route with the acoustic song, "Crush." This song is beautiful with its melody and simplisticness. Not my favorite on the album, but still amazing. The lyrics are amazing as well. Don't skip over this one. 4.5/5
6) Suffer-This song is somewhat like "Crush", just improved in my opinion. This is another song that takes a turn and definetly not for the worst. Its simpy amazing. The lyrics should be valued here. 5/5
7) Snail-This song is awesome! Billy Corgan is just amazing with his song writing ability. This is without a doubt the best song on the album. No question about it. Go listen to it. 5/5
8) Tristessa-This song sounds like "I am one" to me. This song is full of energy as well as grinding vocals. Not my personal favorite, but still a great track. Yet another wonderful guitar solo. 4/5
9) Window Paine-Simply put, this song is freaking amazing. My favorite on the album and my favorite Pumpkins song. It starts off slow with a simple D to E chord variation, but halfway through explodes into a monstrous jam. I cant help but go crazy when I listen to this song. Its so powerful and just ahhh. Do not skip this song. Ever. 5/5
10) Daydream-Sung by D'arcy Wretzsky, "Daydream" is a catchy tune with gorgeous harmony. A fitting end to an amazing album. A short song only clocking at about 1:45 until Billy comes in with the hidden track "Im going crazy." I dont really know what to think of this song? Just a short, odd song. Haha. 4/5
