The Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot

Album Cover is hosted by Siva.

Band/Album General Information

Billy Corgan: Guitar, Vocals
James Iha: Guitar, Vocals
D'arcy Wretzky: Bass Guitar
Jimmy Chamberlin: Drums

Release Date: October 1994

About The Album:

After the releases of the underrated Gish and the massive hit album masterpiece that was Siamese Dream, as well as all the accompanying singles, the Smashing Pumpkins had a formidible collection of B-sides and the like; songs that were not bad or discardable ideas, but that had simply not made it to an album. Billy Corgan must have realized that even the songs that weren't deemed good enough to appear on an album were still good listening... The result was Pisces Iscariot. This CD is from a time when the band was still quite young and still at peak energy, but with a more relaxed feel than a precisely set up full album release.

The sound and feel of early Smashing Pumpkins is all here. There is a great amount of variety on the disc, from soft and dreamy songs to paced, chugging ballads to hard rockers to all out insane jam session style rampages, and even a few tracks inbetween. There isn't very much sloppiness present, and most of the songs are rather complex with some very good guitar work, which is not something you might expect to be found in so many songs that didn't make the cut. It works as a companion CD to Siamese Dream, yet has enough to it to stand out on its own as a good album.

The outside of the packaging is a variety of blurry images in green and blue. Inside the thin cd liner is a message in typewriter style from Billy Corgan containing various things about the album, some interesting and informative, others quite random. Behind the disc is an interesting photo of the band during a session, having a good time, in rather unique surroundings. Thus the mood is set for Pisces Iscariot.

Overall Rating

3.5 / 5 using the standard MX CD review scale. Pisces Iscariot is a great collection of B-sides and other tracks that didn't quite make it to Siamese Dream, but it is not quite a critical album in the genre. It happens to be one of the greatest collections of B-sides you'll ever hear. If you're a Pumpkins fan, or if you particularly enjoy the Siamese Dream era sound of SP, this CD is an essential. How obscure these tracks are to most people is a shame.

What's Good About It

How many discs of B-sides do you see in the store? Not very many. How many of those discs do people buy? Hardly any. A B-sides collection usually has a few gems and decent songs on it, followed by a lot of lower quality work, much of it just plain crap, to serve as filler. This CD, however, has almost nowhere to trim fat from. It's for the most part packed with songs ranging from good to amazing. The tight feel of a final album mix isn't present (at the start of at least one track you can hear the tape clicking), and the band is genuinely having a good time. Remember at the end of Silverfuck when Billy says "Alright... this take... don't give a fuck"? Yeah, it's kinda like that.

What's Bad About It

It's not completely top notch. One or two tracks are bound to make you twist your face and wonder why the heck they showed up, while songs like Glynis are missing. Even if you love it, Billy's voice can get really irritating on some tracks (Landslide). One or two tracks (these are all going to vary by person, I predict) will also have you wondering why they move so slowly or go on so long. Also, it's a pieced together album of unreleased tracks, which to me takes away from the feeling that the album was designed to have these specific songs in this order. All in all, it's not their best album.

Individual Song Review

Song rating is relative to the rest of the album, with a 5 indicating the best song(s) on the album and a 1 indicating tracks that simply should never had gone into production.

1. Soothe (2:36)

3.5 / 5. This song is nothing but a guitar and the sweet strains of Billy Corgan's voice. It is very soothing, and a decent song, but it's a little early on for a slow and meaningful piece. You'll either love or hate this song, but it's really not a bad song at all.

2. Frail And Bedazzled (3:17)

4.5 / 5. From the moment this song rolls in on a phase shifting lone riff, you get a good vibe. It's a classic Pumpkins rocker that is very upbeat and positive, considering the lyrics. A trippy solo and unusual a cappella portion lead this song into a hard hitting finish. Frail will instantly come off as one of the gems on Pisces Iscariot.

3. Plume (3:37)

5 / 5. Not to bias the review of this song, but it might be my favourite Pumpkins number. Reguardless, I've never heard anyone say this song was bad. It's a slower, chugging, power number with lyrics about being bored, filled with thick, deep and repeating (but amazing and fun) riffs. The song really shines halfway through and at the end with two very unique, heavily phase modulated bend-filled solos. Another big track on Pisces.

4. Whir (4:10)

3.5 / 5. "Whir yourself around... just to fall back down." This is a relaxed and very light slow song that drifts along but doesn't really have a solid sticking point. There's some nice acoustic guitar work and octave stuff on here involving the bass, as the lyrics muse through a fictional life situation that the singer has to find ways to deal with. It's a good slow song with a neat ending, but doesnt possess enough to be very moving.

5. Blew Away (3:32)

5 / 5. This song is just... beautiful. Soft guitar leads and a mellow flow along with very present bass make for a very pretty sounding piece, sung entirely by James Iha. After dancing around through a few bridging progressions the song quiets down and suddenly the distortion cranks up and a powerful solo backed by thick chords absolutely pours in for a final chorus. Smashing Pumpkins make some of the absolute best love songs out there.

6. Pissant (2:31)

5 / 5. The first thing you might notice about this song as the furious drumbeat comes running in is that it is mixed all as one, a rare live recording. A chunky and fast riff with pounding bass quickly takes over and is accompanied by loud, angst-ridden vocals. This song is fast, hard, and fun.

7. Hello Kitty Kat (4:32)

4 / 5. In the liner notes, Billy Corgan heralds it as his most passive-agressive song. This song gets into its heavy, neverending overdriven run right from the start. For having the format of a simple hard rocker, it contains a lot of creative variations, including a key change leading into a guitar solo'd ending. The mix is distorted due to Billy playing around with it, and as such there's some crackling, and the vocals are difficult to hear.

8. Obscured (5:22)

5 / 5. A long, slow, dreamy number containing massive quantities of guitars and some unusual alternate tunings to achieve unique sounds. It's much dreamier than Whir or Soothe, and you fall into it deep and float along with the river of sounds until the dramatic feedback ending. A very amazing song.

9. Landslide (3:10)

3.5 / 5. It seems like everyone's got a cover of this song... and it's a good song after all... but I tire of hearing it. It happens to be one of Billy Corgan's favourite songs, and it's not like this is a bad cover... it's better than most. It stays simple, but Billy gets very whiny throughout, subtracting from the feeling. After hearing Obscured, this track just feels shallow. Curiously, it is the only song on Pisces to ever air on the radio.

10. Starla (11:01)

5 / 5. This song is LONG, and it's in the best way possible. A truly remarkable progressive pattern is present here. Interesting backwards guitar floats around as a simple ascending riff begins, and Billy sings the verses. After a few minutes, the reversed guitar fades away and some distortion slams onto the riff while the verses repeat. The guitar steps off and a short, soft interlude begins. After a few powerful lyrics, the distorted main riff comes back for more and Jimmy's drums go into overtime as well. An insane lead composed of two guitars comes in over for a very complex 'solo' lasting no less than four minutes. When the action ends, a peaceful fading out riff comes to walk you to the door.

11. Blue (3:19)

4 / 5. A chime track introduces this song, which contains a very prominent bass with some noteworthy handling. The chorus line is simply, "For you.... Blue". After a while the song comes to a conclusion, but it is not the end... A short and very mellow follup section comes in to conclude the song.

12. Girl Named Sandoz (3:34)

3 / 5. This is a cover of a song originally performed by The Animals... and no, the original wasn't so hot either, but it might be better. A fun song that feels like significant heaviness has been added from the original (it has) with silly lyrics about an odd girl. A part of the song contains rather random guitars playing lead lines and making feedback and really deteriorates from the integrity of this song, which worked better with a simple structure. The solo is also mediocre, although not that bad. There's a good chance you won't be so keen on this track.

13. La Dolly Vita (4:16)

3 / 5. A slower song with some nice guitar parts. The feel is loose, and although it is nice sounding it's hard to get into, similar to Whir. "Cool as ice cream."

14. Spaced (2:24)

2 / 5. In the liner Billy ponders what he was thinking when he made this track. You will too. Starting with what sounds like a propeller gradually slowing down, this track becomes two minutes of two repeating measures on guitars gradually swelling in volume, accompanied by simple lead lines. All the while Billy is saying the most random and profane things, and they're all spliced together in the song, many parts overlaying each other. Spaced is simply disappointing, although it may teach you a few new innovative ways to use "fuck" or "whore" in a sentence.

Pisces Iscariot finishes overall as a quality piece of work. It defies all expectations for a collection of B-sides, and contains a few outstanding, memorable songs. It's a valuable part of any Pumpkin lover's collection as it completes the early years. At the end of the day, a few of their other albums are better, but Pisces Iscariot is still rich with goodies.

Pisces Iscariot = Arguably better than ANY B-Sides album EVER Released.
This is no ordinary B-Sides compilation that was thrown together from old
discarded songs and demos that were plain jane material.

Smashing Pumpkins were know for making loud and quite music and putting
it together rather nicely. This CD is no exception. The range of
songs is astonishing, from the raw angry “pissant” to the beautiful soothe.

I have included what Billy said about each song the Pumpkins wrote in italics.

Soothe - 4/5. A Very mellow, sad acoustic ballad about loneliness and
being hungry. One of Billy's old acoustic demos from the Siamese era.
Here is what Billy said about Soothe:
"Recorded in my bedroom at my old apartment. You can hear the 7 a.m.
buses slithering by. A song for my babies. Children of the earth and such
I wanted to put this on Siamese Dream, but I wimped out. It's a song
about how you sometimes just feel empty inside. It always makes me cry. "

Frail and Bedazzled - 5/5. A nice, short, mellow rocker with some real
attitude. Corgan's solo is pretty fun to hear in this one.
Here is what Billy had to say about the song:
"Written for the monolith in '92- we jut never got around to investing
the proper time into this lullaby. We recorded this in about one hour,
and I wished we had spent more time, but... From the me vs. rock file.
Wrote these lyrics in the parking garage where i used to live/rehearse.
It was very cold in there-but quiet. You could hear the squeaking tires
at night, sounded like ghosts or something, but I wrote this message from
me to me to you. infinite lost at word sea. Owes a great debt to the band
Skunk, with whom I ripped part of this song off. Skunk was probably the
greatest band that I ever knew/saw
that is virtually unknown. "

Plume - 4/5 Taken from the "I Am One" single, this fuzzed-out Slow
rocker is a nice little song that takes the album into a different side
of the pumpkins. Relatively boring riff, but great solos.
Here is what Billy said about Plume:
"A groover from the Iha file- assembled I- in sane said bedroom and
recorded only a few days later at Kerry's studio. Another demo thing that
turned ugly and mean and got released. I know I wrote some of these
lyrics waiting for my dad to pick me up at the aeroport. My boredom has
outshined the sun. Sometimes you don't spend as much time on the lyrics-
and sometimes they're better- more how you REALLY feel. "

Whir - 4/5. Possibly the mellowest song on the album, this song is
respected by many, hated by few. It seems to have a bit of a country
twist to it.
Here is what Billy said about the Whir:
"Another recorded in an hour type that has been in the box. Part of the
Glynis lineage- sweet and sadness I've wasted all my years. I must have
written that line a zillion times, it just ended up here. Sometimes when
I listen to this, I hear who we really are. "

Blew Away - 4/5. From the James Iha collection. This song never really struck me until recently. My second favorite Iha song next to "The Boy"
Billy Corgan (taken exactly from PI liner):
"blew away - written by and produced by the man himself, welcome to
james. quiet and cool and whispered. this is a beautiful song. the only
song we have ever done that i was not did not stick my nose into and i am
glad i didn't. not to be confused with blue."

Pissant - 5/5. A nice two minute rocker with some super fast powerchords and some attitude. Loud, mindless fun, with the teenage angst we all love so much.
Here is what Billy said about Pissant:
"Pissant is one of the few things we have ever recorded live. Done during
the Siamese Dream sessions late at night and full of teenage pain. I made
up all these lyrics in ten minutes- got me a raygun, got me an altitude,
can't help feeling something's wrong with everyone of you- don't know
what it's about. Don't care. Rawk. Kerry and D'arcy tried to talk me into
putting this on the album and I was tempted, but no I just couldn't see
it in there amongst the tall trees. Not as much shade or room for the
little ones. "

Hello Kitty Kat - 4/5. A Slow Rocker that flanges in and out of your
speakers on high octane fuzz.
Here is what Billy said about Hello Kitty Kat:
"Now this song was a toughie because I really had intended to put this on
that album. But the ghosts of Gish said no no no so I left it alone kinda
because I really destroyed the mix. My most passive aggressive song. Say
hello before you say good-bye I should go before you make me cry she
wants to bleed every drop inside of me but I aim to please the little
girl inside of me too you know I hate say I always stay I don't want to
be like the others please who's sorry now if is how you how..............
love to love to love what you adore. Assemble a somewhat continuous
collection of this. "

Obscured - 5/5. Beautiful song, taken from the "Today" single. The lyrics for this are top notch, best on the album.
Here is what Billy had to say about the song.
"Obscured is old because it was originally supposed to be on the Lull
E.P. which was really supposed to be a single but they tricked me.
Written during Gish recordings, we have finished it and let it sit for
two years and then it can come out as the B side of Today in the U.K. The
darkland. So it was on all of friends tapes and supposed to be on the
next one but I swore I would never again re-record one of our own songs
because it is lame to do so."

Landslide - 3.5/5. Not the best job of singing by Corgan, and it's not
the best cover they've ever done. In my opinion, Dancing In The Moonlight
would have better fit in Landslide's Place.

Starla - 5/5. Nothing is perfect, but this song gets a five from me,
because this is pure Pumpkins. It's raw Pumpkin power. It starts off with
a slow rhythm, leaves out with an Asus2 chord...then kick on the dirt box
and VROOM!! This thing takes off. Billy goes INSANE on guitar (using a
load of effects in the process) for the 6 minute jam session after the
actual song is finished. Beautiful noise. Don't skip over this one.
Here is what Billy said about Starla:
"My friend Aneta still says to me that this song should have been on
Siamese Dream. But back again to that no record 2x rule. This was
recorded at the same time as Plume, and was also intended to be a demo,
but we needed b-sides for our pretty worthless I an One U.K. Single (the
dark continent). So in a way Plume and Starla were their own single if
that makes any sense at all. Recorded over time, or recorded at two
different sessions, one for vocals and solos, and one for drums, etc....
Another song with vocals written at the last second. I wrote the middle
part on the back of an envelope- serve yourself no one else can do for
you like you and no one else fails like me but in my eyes I burn alive no
more words just you and I high in the sky- some of my favorite lyrics.
Better that I did not care. Solo played at 7 a.m. Listen for the police
car going by. I met this girl in Dallas when we were on tour with the
Chili Peppers and that was where I got the idea for the song because when
she said her name I thought wow, what a great title for a song.. Two and
one fourth years later, I run into this same girl at a part and I say did
you hear that song we recorded using your name, starla? And she said, no
my name is Darla but hey Starla, Darla whatever it doesn't matter, so
there you go. Never trust a girl who ends up with, well I can't say."

Blue - 4/5. This song takes several twists and turns. As soon as it's
done rocking, then it slows to a mellow pace, then starts rocking again.
Great song!
Here is what Billy said about Blue:
"Blue is the only Gish outtake represented here. From the Lull single.
Viva lull and remastered by our man Howie for your listening pleasure.
Yet another sad happy song from the O'Corrigan file. I thought about
using an acoustic version of the song for this album, but it seemed silly
to have a different version of an unknown song. Maybe someday. On tour
forever, blue I lay with you this velvet morning stay with me for a while
a million yes's and no's strewn across 6 long years. But it all adds up
to something even if you are not quite sure of what that is. "

Girl Named Sandoz - 3/5. An Animals' Cover written by the infamous Eric Burdon and John Weide. It's a good song to get up and dance to, which is not something the pumpkins' usual make you do.

La Dolly Vita - 5/5. Taken from the "Tristessa" vinyl. I understand why
it was a B-Side. It would have never fit with the distorted fury of Gish.
Sort of reminiscent of Crush, this is one of my favorite songs from the
Pumpkins. Absolutely beautiful.
Here is what Billy said about La Dolly Vita:
"So old yet it is kinda timeless in a strange way. I think it is because
it has a dignity all in it. So many mistakes but the raygun is always on
catch my assumption. Mary's always on the shoulder and the devil has his
pitch fork on that backside of yours. La Dolly Vita, true as blue sky,
cool as ice cream. The beside of our second single recorded with Butch
Vig. We recorded this and Tristessa on the same day somewhere in the past
and it was also the first day back. Many memories. Sorry, a tad too
personal. Be careful what you say but be more careful what you don't.
Well, a song like this we don't play live. Mostly not because it is a bad
song. But because the band has never found the right way to play it.
We've managed to record it in the studio. I would much rather not play a
song and have it be sacred. I don't want to sound religious about it.
But, I mean if something is dear to your heart, and you got to go out
every night a ruin it and trying to play that song live is we keep
ruining and ruining. Part of the problem to was that it has and alternate
tuning. So, if your playing it to friends... "

Spaced - 3/5. This is an odd one here. Experimental sounds and passing voices in and out. Vulgar language is all over the place in this one,
though you can hardly make out a word Billy speaks. Not really a song,
but a good closure for this collection.
Here is what Billy said about Spaced.
"Spaced is kinda hard to explain so I won't, but if you listen real close
you can hear the seven secrets of the seven veils of Apollo. Part of the
Siamese Dream debris collection. "

great review borth of u!!

Got the album the day i edited this messege. I love pissant, its very unique to the sound of SP. Plume is the best song on the album so far after listening to it 3 times. Although some songs are good and album standard, i cant picture any of these songs on the albums they were intended for origionally. Except i could imagine blue on gish, partly due to the loud bass lines that darcy played around that time. Hello Kitty kat is also a close contender for my faveourite song as well. This album also has slow songs, blown away being the only one i enjoyed. I was running out of time to listen to starla (we were going out to luch) but i will listen to it eventually. Its better than G-sides by gorillaz (the only other b sides album i have).

Till next time, marty

Theres a lot of debate over what the front cover is.

Billy says its him

Courtney Love says its her with a cherry in her mouth.

Billys ex wife Chris said she had something to do with PI (Most likely the necklace)

Im gonna go with this:

It looks like billy with a cherry in his mouth. Lol.

Then again, Billy used to date Courtney and he hates her now im pretty sure.
