Drowning Pool – Sinner (2001)
Most of you have probably heard of these guys through one song, Bodies. That song was banned from the radio due to its lyrical content and how close it resembles the 9/11 tragedy at the World Trade Center. I am kind of sad that they took it off of the radio, though. It starts out with Dave whispering "Let the bodies hit the floor" four times, and on the forth time, he screams the word floor which starts the whole shebang. Sinner, the title track is the first one on the CD and was featured in NHL Hitz 2003. It is kind of an anti-Christ song, but still very catchy.
Tear Away was probably the song that got me into this band, other than Bodies. It starts out very slow and has a very good vocal message. The guitar isn’t forced and matches well with the bass. The drum beat is very good and it creates a radio friendly song. Follow is my personal favorite on the CD and is the song which introduced me to Drowning Pool. It was on the PS One version of THPS 3. The guitars are tuned to drop B and they do a good job of adding harmonics and good rhythm sections. The verses are fragments of sentences trying to get a point across, such as
"Here I am, understand
With this comes frustration"
and the chorus
"better way to follow through
I'm far from done
The truth is right there in front of you
A better way to follow through
I'm far from done
The truth is right there in front of me."
He is trying to say that the truth is right in front of all us, but we can’t realize that yet. This is my favorite song on the CD.
Mute is another good one as it starts out with clean guitar that goes into distortion. The lyrics are pretty catchy as well, there is a solo that hugs the rhythm guitar and the bass, but does a good job revolving around it. The structure is a typical rock song structure, soft verse, loud chorus, but Dave got his point across.
Overall, the guitar can add some very catchy riffs and the bass is audible. Dave Williams had some killer vocals on this CD and it is a shame he still isn’t here to write more like this. The guitar lines with Dave’s vocals WILL get stuck in your head for a while. I will give this CD a 5/5 because it is the classic hard rock in modern times.
Good Things about the CD-
Dave Williams vocals
There are guitar solos
Extremely atchy songs
Bad Things about the CD-
Gets repetitive
Bass hugs guitar lines too much, although it is audible
Could use more guitar solos
Kind of a short CD (but a classic nonetheless).
