Statement: Women can not rock.
This is an untrue statement.
Statement: The 80’s are over
This is a true statement.
These are the two statements that come to mind from my umpteenth listen to all girl group, the Donna’s 5th studio LP, Spend the Night. In all honesty it is the worst album I have ever heard in my life. I know, I know, a little blunt, but let me break it down. The Donna’s are a cheap AC/DC rip-off with the lyrical content of a popular teenage girl’s yearbook. Limp riffs hold up lame tunes, which sound like they need more Viagra to get up than Angus Young at his 100th birthday (and I’m betting he’ll be dead). The drum beats are weak and extremely cheesy. Think Poison’s Rikki Rocket at his worst and most pathetically clichéd. All the songs on this CD sound exactly the same. Pop-rocky girl spunk tunes with pop-metal vocals singing sexed up junior high school lyrics. Some of lead singer, Brett Anderson’s genius lyrics include two liners like “All I wanna do is call you on the
phone
You got me higher than the ozone!”
And many other pleasantly dumb metaphors. As a child this type of music was intriguing to me, I was an AC/DC fan, and it was fun to hear 3 hot girls (and one so-so one) sing about sexing guys up and getting drunk before bed-time. Nowadays I’ll take Liz Phair’s first album over this if I’m into that sort of stuff; it certainly has a lot more creativity. Though Spend the Night was produced by Butch Walker, it comes now where near the power and creativity of his many projects. If I were to say one nice thing about this CD, it would be the Donnas are very energetic. Perfect for the type of child I described before, and/or old men who love to hear the sound of a young woman’s voice. Oh baby.
