Review Summary: What to expect from a DJ dressed up like a Marshmallow?
Starting this review I will repeat the same question inserted in the summary: what to expect from a DJ dressed up like a marshmallow? Maybe this is not so peculiar if we are talking about a genre of music that also has DJ robots' Grammy winners and a big mouth DJ with mouse head, yet it is curious.
Everybody knows EDM has been producing a massive amount of generic electronic music, but Marshmello delivers here in his first studio album a pretty fun moment although do not denying the cliches of its genre. "Joytime" creates a good collection of upbeats, sometimes almost flerting with chiptune, constructing a "happy" aura that ilustrates well the name of the album. In some way Joytime reminds the good EPs of the early Skrillex carreer, with hard beats and good sense of melody. It sure has an easy melody to digest, and does not rely so much in repetition to get bored. Marshmello is now even crossing frontiers to present in foreign festivals, and the most crucial characteristics to bring attention right now is in "Joytime": great sound production, interesting and good beats to vibe with besides the charisma expected from a person in a marshmallow costume.
Let's hope Marshmello does not get sucked by the system and built his carreer in easy-sell songs. A hype would be good for a more advanced and mature sophomore album that certainly will end up being a surprise (good or bad, anyway).
