Review Summary: The End Of Jawbreaker.
Jawbreaker's Dear You is an album that hardly anyone liked upon release, everyone hated it. The band broke up and that was it, but even though that was the end of the band's career their legacy lived on inspiring many bands and Dear You eventually was seen as the band's best offering.
Dear You is as all Jawbreaker albums are dark, Schwarzenbach sounds as though he's in a great deal of a pain when he belts out these lines pertaining to such topics as: wanting someone to *** , failing relationships, betrayal, and young love. Schwarzenbach's vocal's are top notch.
The instrumentation alone on Dear You is worth a listen, while nothing complex is being done I bob my head along to these amazing moments like in Accident Prone where it's buiding up into the chorus and the drumming gets faster and faster as the guitar follows suit all for it to come crashing together in an explosive chorus. Alot of Dear You is like that. Fun, dark , and explosive. I really feel for Schwarzenbach as he belts out lines like: "All I wants a steady ***" or "I couldn't wait to breathe your breathe cut, cut in line, and bled to death, got to you there was nothing left"
To say Schwarzenbach sounds depressed for the majority of this album would be an understatement. Schwarzenbach's lyrical prouise has always put Jawbreaker far above the punk bands of their era and in Dear You, Schwarzenbach doesn't hold back at all. He tells you his iner most personal thoughts and wants, and in the end. I feel that's what really did Jawbreaker in. Schwarzenbach opened up to his fans and for years was greeted with a collective "Boo!" I find it ironic that now this album as heiled as one of the best emo albums of all time.
Emo......That's definitely what describes this album personal. Very personal. Dear You may not be for everyone, it's lyrics can be seen as juvenile or pretensious to some and his vocal style has changed since 24 Hour Revenge therapy due to his vocal surgery. Their was a lot of heart and soul that the band put into this album it's just sad knowing for some people that wasn't enough.
