Review Summary: "Bored with nothing to do, lay around listen to Deja Entendu thinking about you"
Moose Blood.
The band that can most accurately be describes as the love child of Jimmy Eat World and (Early) Brand New and this band wears it's influnces like a boy scout with all his merit badges, so It's inevitable we have to bring up the fact that this band is in fact an emo one. So what exactly does that mean, on this album, not much really, and that's not at all a stab at the band. They bring next to nothing new to the table besides the lyrics which are passable but very fun.
Which brings me to my main point. This is not a somber I wanna cry myself to sleep emo album, but more a I wanna sing along and dance about fun emo album. Much more in the vein of "Bleed American" Than "Clarity" and a hell of a lot more like " Your Favorite Weapon" Than "Deja Entendu" It's a nice blend of Pop Punk and Emo.
The band hails from the UK, and this is the first EmoPop Punk band I've heard from the UK so naturally the accent thing was weird for me at first, but after hearing "Gum" I fell in love with this album. Now none of the songs touch on anything particularly dark at all, aside from Pups being about his father, whom he once stayed out all night and drank with, and now his fathers gone, but mostly the songs are about young love, alcohol abuse, relationships, and lots of band references.
Where Moose Blood succeeds is their fun we don't give a *** attitude in their music, they may not be much of anything new, but with Moose Blood's combined influences they are a breath of fresh air in a genre filled with bands that all worship the same bands and sound largely the same as each other, but I don't get that feeling from Moose Blood, at least not on this album.
Their are more technical aspects to the album, it has some really cool sounding breaks and the guitarist and drummer can pull of some insanely catchy instrumentals that get stuck in my head, and this band has a great singer, he pulls of some fun melodies and the lyrics although juvenile mostly are good, but certainly nothing to write home about.
All in all Moose Blood made a fantastic EmoPop Punk debut with "I'll Keep You In Mind From Time To Time" and I paitently await their next offering
