Bleach is nirvana's first and best album, imo. Its raw loud under produced grunge. The bass is low and well done, the guitar is loud and in your face, and the drums are loud and match the songs very well. People have said the underproduction of this albm ruins it, i love the sound of poorly produced stuff.
Nirvana were:
Kurdt Kobain: Guitar, vocal
Chris Novoselic: Bass
Chad Channing: Drums
Dale Crover: Drums on school, paper cuts and downer (not sure if thats 100% correct).
There are no bad songs on this album in my opinion. But if you don't like loud noise and screaming this is not for you.
Track-by-Track (sorry)
1. Blew: one of my favorite bass lines. Its very catchy and has a touch of distortion. The guitar is louded with distortion and the drums are simple, with short rolls every once in a while. Kurdt screams mostly, in his o-so awesome way. His vocals fit the instrumentation very well. I love the solo. It is very dark. This song is the best on the album hands down. 5/5
2. Floyd the Barber: A loud song. The bass does exactly what the guitar does, but this is a song where the bass shouldnt be different. The drums match the rythme perfectly. Kurdt's vocals are mostly un-comprehensible (unless you know the words). The solo is an up-beat like thing that is very well done. This song is pretty funny if you know the lyrics. This song is a more metal like loud guitar oriented song. 4.5/5
3. About a Girl: a nice chord thing on the guitar. The drums have some nice fills here and there. The bass has some nicer fills during the chorus that make it a little less boring. The chorus is pretty up beat like the rest of the song. The solo is like happy distortion. Kurdt does a good job singing on this song. His lyrics are well written. This song is like a nice song played with chords with distortion and a more punk sound. Theres a nice echo of Kurdt saying i do that adds a little some thing to this excellent song. 5/5
4. School: an awesome and simple guitar opening. This song is very metal-like and the lyrics don't vary much at all and the bassis a bit harder to hear over the distortion and the drums but if you took it out you would tell the difference (as is most songs). The solo is a typical loud blur from Kurdt with the bass and drums keeping it steady. Then after the solo you hear the bass and drums and Kurdt sings quietly then louder and screams, which is (a-part from the solo)the best part of the song. Very loud metal like song. 4.5/5
5. Love Buzz: this is a cover of shocking blue. Ive never heard the real version so i dont know if they changed it much. The bass here is very catchy and eastern like, the guitar is loud and fast, and the drums keep a solid beat the whole way through. The bass and drums are alone a lot in this song and it sounds really good. Kurdt's vocals are really good. He screams and sings and they go together very well. The guitar has a really cool solo that sounds a lot like random fills. Then after awhile theres a bass solo. This solo has got to be my second favorite bass part. Its a different thing for Chris but he does an awesome job on it. 5/5
6. Paper Cuts: Loud and distortiony with mostly guitar and drums. Kurdt mumbles mysteriously and screams at the end of every second sentence of the verse which adds a feeling of anger to this loud wonder. The bass hass nice part in the chorus. Kurdt is awesome on this song. Kurdt's moans of nirvana add more mysterious and darkness to this song. 4/5
7. Negative Creep: This is a loud song of guitar distortion and screaming. It has an angry feeling that makes you want to fight someone. Kurdt's vocals are hard to understand. This song is a good head banging song. The guitar is full of raw energy and the drums when they come in in the intro add to the amount of head banging you want to do. The song just fades out with kKurdt screaming "Daddy's little girl ain't a girl no more."
8. Scoff: starts with drums that reminded me of my sharona. the guitar is muted and loud and the chorus is just aweosme. Kurdt does a very good job on the vocals and guitar work. Chris keeps his bass going even though you can barely hear it. The drums fit here better then on any other songs, imo. The guitar is full of anger and energy. 4/5
9. Swap Meet: a somewhat palm muted guitar riff with lots of distortion. Then the drums and bass back that up perfectly. The drums do really nice rolls during the chrous. Kurdt's lyrics are pretty sweet here. His vocals are semi-screaming to screaming. The instrumentation matches the lyrics really well. The solo is a bunch of raw power and anger. I really like those drum rolls. 4/5
10: Mr. Moustache: the fatest guitar and bass on the album (except maybe on downer). This is loud and fast as hell. The you can hear the bass , and it sounds really metaly and it goes perfect with the guitar. The drums are loud and the fills are perfect. Kurdt's vocal performance is very good. You can understand the screaming he does here. The lyrics kinf of confues me. This is an awesome metaly song with really fast everything. This song is like happiness and anger fused together to form this awesome song. 4/5
11. Sifting: drums start this song off. then the guitar comes in matching the drums to a tee. The bass is heard well here and it add a lot of the darkness to this song. Kurdt's lyrics are really good on this song. His vocals are his mumbling to screaming thing. The instrumnentation blends with the vocals rreally nicely. This song is very dark with a hint of happy in there. The solo is the most dark and mysterious on the album. Kurdt humming adds some more darkness. Its got some screechy stuff with some A+ guitar playing. The guitair moans for awhile then you're back into the chorus. 4/5
12. Big Cheese: Really loud. I think its about a school principal. I've gopt to say the guitar and bass are really great. They're really simple but man they rule. Kurdt screams and moans and mumbles a lot. Theres some weird effect in the background during the chorus that adds to the weird sound to the song. The solo is just another Kurdt solo. The drum fills are extremely well placed. 4/5
13. Downer: everything is fast in this song. The bass and drums are really dark and when the guitar and vocals come in it adds more darknes and anger to this. Kurdt's vocals are excellent. He mumbles fast during the verse and ends it with a scream and screams the chrous. Then a palm muted outro ends this amaziong album. 4/5
