Review Summary: Groovy slickly refined sci-fi tech death shred.

In the crowded technical death metal genre it can be hard for new bands to make an impact. It's a genre where even dazzling technicality seems to have diminishing returns. However, there is always still the opportunity for great bands to make an impact and make a fresh sounding album. With the debut album Laniakea The Ritual Aura have done just that.

The Ritual Aura is a band from Australia whose new sci-fi themed album makes a case as a fresh (for its genre), highly entertaining, and addictive record. The music is high speed and relentless with note choice leaning toward the more progressive/sci-fi side rather than the “classic” metal side. A lot of what you would expect is here: slick riffs, warping time signatures, fast as humanly possible playing, and the ability to stop the music dead on a whim. But it is all done as well as ever. It sounds like a mix of The Faceless' Planetary Duality and Necrophagist's Epitaph by using an alien theme and extreme high speeds that manage to be so catchy at the same time. In fact, one of the biggest strengths here are the motivic repeated riffs and rhythms that even out nicely with the overall sporadic nature of this brand of high speed tech death. Christian Muenzner even makes an appearence! Other strengths include the absolute clarity of the instrument tones and production, unique and immense layering, and high speeds never sacrificing the album's driving melodic force. The lead guitar work here manages to take some of the signature elements of tech death shred and freshen it up with imaginative guitar harmonization and chord choice. And the bass player does it all on the NS Stick; often tapping his way through whole songs. Hell yes!

The vocals are usually mid-low growls but sometimes go to high shrieks. Their phrasing is good, but this album is extremely instrumentally driven, even more than most tech death. At only 25 minutes it could have used one more track to flesh out the experience. Essentially the true final track is an instrumental that gives the end of the album a nice “jam it out” tone but doesn't do anything specific to take advantage of being an instrumental and is ultimately overshadowed by the other tracks. The official final track is also the title track but disappointingly is just over a minute long of ambiance. Thus the end of the album is weaker than the proceeding seven tracks.

If you are looking for a completely new take on extreme metal this isn't it. But if you are looking for extremely technical death metal that adheres to the genre with refinement and excellence this is one release you don't want to miss. With a conviction to some of the best elements of the style and superb execution, you will truly feel like you are witnessing devious alien machinations.

Planetary Duality meets Epitaph? Really?

Could one possibly find two more kick-ass tech-death albums to throw in a blender? I'm checking this out, albeit skeptically.

They say they sound like Decrepit Birth, Death, and Beyond Creation. I have not done a lot of listening of those bands but I think Planetary Duality and Epitaph are good comparisons. I would say this is just as good as those, with more emphasis on shred.

Tell me what you think bro.

I would say the best are Time Lost Utopia and Era of the Xenotaph. It does lose steam after the first three proper tracks. The slightly less strong tracks "Precursor to Aphotic Collapse" and "Erased in the Purge" would work better in the album to me if they could have had one more great near end track.

Listening again the instrumental is a fitting end, just wish there was more.

I still feel like this is some of the best tech death of the year.

What makes those tracks weaker to you guys? Just interested.

Wow. I couldn't care less whether this was the most original thing on the planet or not; it's the most fun I've had listening to tech-death in *years.* Thanks for the recommendation, Dmax! Huge pos for you.

I'm apparently an odd duck here because I loved "Precursor of Aphotic Collapse."

Sweet dude! I actually love it too haha. Thanks for checking the review. To me this is strong enough that the "weakest" song on here is still top tier :P Utter insanity.

Btw anyone; what do you have to do to get newly added band's albums onto the "new releases" section of this site? It's not on there, and I know more people would see this if it was.

I bought the loathing requiem album. I thought that it was all really solid but just not catchy enough for me. Granted I only heard it once. I remember it had some great moments. I'll have to spin it again.

I haven't heard of those other guys. I know you know your tech deth so I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the rec!

Crazy they were playing an 8 string bass and 9 string guitar live. Wouldn't have thought it with the guitar. They are going to get to work on the next album.

I almost wish this was longer and had more progressive sections because it just kind of feels too miniscule for a sound like this

Hey thanks! I really appreciate it. This really blew me away on my first couple listens. Someone on their facebook page said it should have been longer and the band responded that the next album will be twice as long. :P

@mindleviticus - yea I really like the tight and concise approach but this could be much more if at times they branch out and give it more room to expand. It would def add some runtime, depth, and interest.

On another note, the random cleans on Erased in the Purge were very nice.

After listening to this again I might bump it up. These guys are like if early Rings of Saturn conceived a child with Shores of Elysium.

Yea the cleans were nice. More are welcome.

I hadn't heard of Shores of Elysium and haven't listened to Rings of Saturn much but I see what you mean.

Listening to Shores now. Wow it's great, so melodic and dark thanks for the rec!!!

Love your avatar/pic btw. What was your fav sonic game? Or did you just watch the cartoon? Ha.

I love SoE. Ohio pride!

Rings of Saturn are a heavily disputed group; some people despise them completely and want them to die, then there are people like me who like that kind of sound. I own their whole discography and I think each CD has it's own tone to it.

I'm the classical lover of the old generation. Everyone keeps pointing out the flaws, but I'll stick by Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 forever. No other Sonic game has really grabbed my attention since those came out.

Interesting I have to listen to them more. I'm rarely bothered by what many call wank.

The Sonic Adventure games are my favorite sonic games. I was too young to play the older ones but those were great. Playing it is like a continuous nostalgia wave. LOVED the music on those games. Still in my top soundtracks of all time.
