Review Summary: Without those things you only know

A single voice bellows from a comparable Hell, but fails to do anything but initially confuse the listener and, frankly, scare those curious enough to listen. The constant static covers suffocated musical ideas – ones that bring strong melody, ravishing yet predictably abrasive textures, and what ultimately would anger any average Tool fan. The elements here make Wold an entry into these common, empty worlds for any curious wannabe-noise fan. The record can be used to demonstrate the way noise music paints particularly unique emotions. I feel the best way to give this record a relatable value is to bring up a noise music theory I’ve heard from time to time. Some say noise music can be used as a tool to visualize another world, one that seems to not only transcend but also to devalue and ignore culture, society, humanity, physical interaction, and even life itself. Some especially grating material seems to help picture a dimension devoid of any sort of relatable reality – almost as if the music comes straight out of a void zone in the universe. Postsocial, in the name, seems to picture a particular world devoid of society, musical tradition, and possibly people themselves. Instead lie uncontrolled lands, emotionless and directionless organisms, and, ultimately, paints a world filled with meaninglessness. Postsocial is a record that will leave you physically sick and incredibly depressed as eternal waves of migraine-inducing sound relentlessly pummel your virgin ears. Occasionally there will be a glimpse into this world, whether the static temporarily shifts into an almost recognizable rhythm or suddenly in a Swans-esque way this record becomes relatable even though nothing’s really here. And those temporary moments will anger and depress you to no end, because this record just is beyond the schema of pleasant music.

"although you pretty much neglect entirely the ties this has and influence this draws from black metal. From this review I'd think this sounds more like Kevin Drumm than Abruptum, when in fact it is quite the opposite."

first, thanks. and yeah thinking about it now it's a point i should have hit on more, but when i was writing the review i figured "well it doesn't really have any sort of bm," so i thought the supposed connection was just a joke. but i listened again after posting the review and reading your comment and yeah i definitely see it now.

pitchfork gave this like an 8/10 which imo is a joke. it can be a powerful album but c'mon, all it really does is fuck with your head a little. i'd definitely say you could give this either a 1 or a 4 and defend your rating well

this is among the worst bm I've ever heard. It's just some guy making the most lulzy screams overtop awful static and what you can barely perceive as instrumentation underneath.

honestly give a few screech owl tracks a shot. there is some good stuff in there

wold opinions seem to fall between kneejerk rage and kneejerk overcompensation. the truth of wold's music is somewhere in the middle.

mostly people will make the argument that if you don't 'like' it, you don't 'get' it, but that's a bunch of bullshit. just one of those artists that's inevitably contentious

"Rating-wise I'd say wold's music varies from a high 3.5-low 4"

;_; really

haven't touched anything on here in ages so I'll probably check it out later for the sake of making my making fun of it more objective.

glanced through screech owl:

the field hag - awful vocals on top of the music kill it. They should be mixed into the cacophony, not slapped on top completely separate from it.

Undying Fire Of Urian - interesting, because there are no discernible vocals :-]

Glanced through Screech Owl as well and I'm still not sure I get the idea behind noise.

I mean it's noise. I try to be open but the appeal just eludes me. Although the BM elements did make it more palatable than other noise I've heard so I might give it a real go and not just a glance

I can dig stuff like ambient/dark ambient or drone because I can get lost in it and drift away for a while but with noise I don't get that because of how abrasive it tends to be. I dunno

Great review for this.

although you pretty much neglect entirely the ties this has and influence this draws from black metal.

And that's why you have this rated so low, you went in looking for bm and weren't satisfied by the results.

nimb i wrote that review, what, 7 years ago?

i'd recommend not caring about it very much

or other people's musical opinions in general

I think Wiz's comment was directed at Nimb not at you. He said it was a great review
