Review Summary: From the death of 'Climates' comes the birth of 'Blood Youth'.
Just weeks after the release of their debut full-length album, melodic hardcore band 'Climates' called it quits. However, four fifths of them decided to give it another go. So, loaded with a new singer, welcome melodic hardcore band, 'Blood Youth'.
It can be difficult to judge an EP. Often you feel like it's just about getting somewhere...then it's over. They need to just be treated as tasters of what's to come, and I think Blood Youth have made it fairly clear what they'll have in store. All five tracks on 'Inside My Head' are fast, melodic, hardcore anthems that will undoubtedly go down well live. You can hear when the crowd will be chanting the words, when the circle pits will commence and when frontman Kaya Tarsus will be commanding his troops to jump up and down. It's not just about the live show though. There are real moments of quality on this EP that point towards a bright future for the Lincoln lads.
It all starts with 'Piece By Piece'...and never really strays too far from that. There's little diversity on here but perhaps there doesn't need to be on an EP. It would just be nice if they offered something slightly different to get us music fans that bit more excited for the future. What we have instead is five well executed, but similar sounding hardcore tracks. Don't switch off just yet though, because what these guys do, they do well.
There's grit and fury on here right from the off with the aforementioned 'Piece By Piece'. Hit single 'Failure' is more a momentous sounding track, hand-crafted for the stage. This song seems to have everything that Blood Youth have in their arsenal. It delivers a superbly catchy chorus, a far more aggressive sound on the second verse, then the clean vocals come in before a post-hardcore influenced bridge precedes the big finale. I can't say I was too impressed by the clean vocals on that track but on 'Cold Sweat' they're placed and executed in far better fashion. 'Dead Space' is a ballsy affair and the heaviest song on offer, while 'Big Smoke' rounds things off in style with a truly great chorus.
There's no doubt then that what the UK's latest hardcore band lack in variety, they make up for in speed and aggression. This is a very enjoyable listen for those that want something fast, passionate, but fun at the same time. I do have a sneaking suspicion that seeing this band live might be the way to experience them, but at this day in age with album sales declining, that may not be a bad thing.
