BUTTHOLE SURFERS
Band
Gibby Haynes
Paul Leary
And Others
Year: 1983
The year was 1981 and the band known as the Butthole Surfers had just signed to Jello Biafra's "Alternative Tentacles" label. After 2 unaccounted years the band released their first studio album entitled "A Brown Reason to Live".
When first released the album featured no title but only a sticker that said "Pee Pee the Sailor" The album also made no mention of which band members performed on which songs, where and when it was recorded and who produced it..
1. Shah Sleeps In Lee Harvey's Grave ~ 2:09
"There's a time to f'uck and a time to crave but the Shah sleeps in Lee Harvey's grave". One of the weirdest songs on the entire album. It features someone maybe Gibby and a wall of noise and feedback. The song ends off perfectly with the sound of a man weeping and yelling.
2. Hey ~ 2:05
This song is one of the more punk influenced songs on the album. It kicks off with a nice catchy bassline and Gibby repeating the word "Hey" with echo effect. It's a very catchy song but it's way to short.
3. Something ~ 4:37
Another punkier song which starts off with the drums playing by itself and then followed by the guitar and bass. The song also features Gibby screechy singing and yelling.
4. BBQ Pope ~ 3:34
Another song with screechy vocals and hilarious lyrics. This song is sort of the same as the previous track except with a bitchin guitar solo!
5. Wichita Cathedral ~ ?:?? Wichita Cathedral
Another song with a fantastic catchy bassline and great drums. Gibby's voice on the song is absolutely beautiful. When I first heard the song I thought it wasn't a Butthole Surfers song. This song has got to be the high point of the entire album
6. Suicide ~
This song has Gibby pretended to be a suicidal teenager. The opening lyrics on the song are rather hilarious. This song really shows the bands punk influences.
7. Revenge Of Anus Presley ~
This song sounds a lot like the first song. The guitar and bass have a real sludgy sound that fits perfectly with the vocals and random noises.
An amazing punk/noise rock album. It was overlooked by the the mainstream and found a cult like following. Most people would think this album as a bunch of noise but others see it as a masterpiece.
