When I first listened to Glass Cloud’s debut album, The Royal Thousand
, I was impressed by their slightly unique blend of melodic metalcore. The heavier parts always hit hard and their more melodic sections didn't sound like they were lifted from one of the million other similar bands out there. Glass Cloud wasn't achieving anything overly ground-breaking, but they had the chops to craft a fun metal album that felt just fresh enough to genuinely appreciate.
With Perfect War Forever
, Glass Cloud has now made the move to nine string guitars, and flushed out almost everything that made them stand out. This EP is littered with muddy nine string breakdown sections and is almost completely devoid of clean vocals. Most of the tracks here run together, and a listener would be hard pressed to remember much here other than some low end nine string farts. Any moments or patterns here that get your toe tapping are either repeated to death or too brief to digest.
Opening two tracks “Trapped Like Rats” and “I Dug A Grave” sound virtually identical. I couldn’t even tell where I was at on the EP without checking. They both are chalk-full of chugs and contain almost all the same stop-start bits with mediocre screams. Jerry Roush isn't really much of a harsh vocalist. The interesting (and distracting) instrumentation from the debut album masked that fact before, but now it’s apparent that he doesn't have much to offer that isn't standard-fare on this EP.
a couple interesting moments that stop this from being a total waste though. “How to Survive Suicide” has a softer bit with clean vocals that proves to be a nice break from being bludgeoned over the head by breakdowns. Also, “Lilac” is probably the highlight of this release, since it contains actual riffs.
Perfect War Forever
is an absolute snoozefest, it's filled to the brim with breakdowns and boring low-tuned djent riffs. Perfect War Forever takes everything melodic and interesting from The Royal Thousand
and swaps it for a buttload of binarycore. The production is incredibly weak, with the guitars being way too muddy and unclear in the mix. There are a couple good moments scattered across the EP, and some head-bobbing parts that wouldn't be out of place on a Danza album, but overall you're probably not going to remember anything positive after listening to this.
