Review Summary: .

Sempiternal could essentially be seen as the culmination of every album Bring Me The Horizon has put out to date. This is a release that certainly has everything that their fans could possibly have asked for (and a lot more besides) but is also clearly an album that aims to change the opinions of the vast amount of haters this band has picked up across their four album career. This album was put out in 2013 to a mass fanfare of excitement across pretty much the board, so it could be said that the band accomplished what they aimed to achieve on this release.

The songs are quite a varied bunch, from the fast-paced metalcore numbers such as The House Of Wolves, Anti-Vist and Crooked Young to the Linkin Park-sounding hit single Sleepwalking and the more progressive sounding song The Snakes Start To Sing. Variety is something this album could definitely never be accused of being devoid of, and the tracks themselves are fairly strong for the most part. Can You Feel My Heart starts off with some glitch electronics before moving into a softer section featuring much more melodic clean singing from Oliver Sykes, showing off one of many new bells and whistles that Sempiternal brings to the table. Following this there are two faster songs (including a fantastic breakdown on Empire), before we are given two more commercial tracks in Sleepwalking and Go To Hell For Heaven's Sake. The listener is then kicked in the face again by the pinched harmonic infested single Shadow Moses, before the two best tracks here (And The Snakes Start To Sing and Seen It All Before) lead into the low point of the album (Anti-Vist). So, yeah, this is a roller coaster release from BMTH.

The guitar work is effective but nothing original, with the high pitched notes in the chorus of The House Of Wolves standing out as one of the better moments here. The faster riffs to this release contain a massive amount of hardcore influence and are near enough indistinguishable from their previous album, whilst the slower moments usually follow the formula set down by the chorus of The House Of Wolves. Breakdowns here are as frequent as ever, but they are better placed and better utilized so as to actually allow the energy of the band to be channeled better. Anti-Vist is really the only track here that contains any musical disappointment to be honest, but this isn't an album that will make history. The lyrical content primarily focuses on Oli's struggles with depression throughout his life and it perfectly compliments his newer vocal style. Throughout this album one will encounter moments that will seem like a throw back to their past album vocally, but for the most part the screams are kept to a lesser amount in favor of some much nicer clean vocals that suit this album startlingly well. Bring Me The Horizon did the impossible here and actually put out a fantastic album that has something for everyone.
