Review Summary: flex your gold

With Black Pleasure Cities Aviv dives off a cliff straight into the unknown; surrounding himself with feedback and a sharp tongue he seems poised to hit something remarkable. And for most of Black Pleasure he does. He let's himself be berated by a maddening loop on "Escorts" that eventually drowns his voice out with fuzz and it's this play on repetition that Cities finds a strength. When his voice finally does surface from the dense production it's a landmark in an otherwise unidentifiable realm. The music found here hints at something that wants to be a fond memory gushing smooth 90's R&B beneath its caustic creator who booms his voice from a distance. This all culminates for one of the most original releases this year. Black Pleasure has the marketability of being a delicate ride that has some surprising twists and turns along the way. Maybe delicate is understating this albums' left hook. Hits like "Pure Infinite" and "Flex Your Gold" show how abrasive his distorted technique is and truly reveal this knack for taking the intolerable and twisting it's properties to create a worth. Ultimately, what's hidden within Black Pleasure is some excellent lo-fi that appreciates its raw insecurity.

Saw him live with death grips and was extremely impressed despite it being the loudest concert I've ever been to.

only similarity i can think of is that his rapping is sort of like death grips, but it's more just speaking loudly to be heard over the reverb rather than pure crazy hobo frenzy. but stylistically this is totally different
