Review:
Fall Children - Starts out a haunting riff and then a distorted guitar comes in over it, as well as a slow beat from the bass and drums. Davey sings slow, then the song stops and the speed kicks in. This is the power that you will recognize from most AFI songs. Davey sings fast and the backing do the "whoa-oh's." There's a pickscrape into the chorus and the backing vocals and Davey trade off. A definate sing-along part. There's another verse and then the chorus. Then it gets slow again with the distorted guitar and then a great sing-along "whoa-oh-oh" part. Then Davey has a little part where he sings "hallowed" a few times, then the music stops and he screams "fall children!" and goes back into the chorus. At the end there's a nice little xylophone part. Good song, but not the best on the cd. 7/10
Halloween - (Written by Glenn Danzig - Misfits) A Halloween cd would not be complete without the song...Halloween, heh. It starts out with some distorted chords and a fast drum beat, and then the guitar and bass come in. You can hear the bass spike up and play a little riff every now and then, very fast. It's cool. Davey sings; it's not Danzig but it makes a very nice cover version. Too bad he didn't stay in the Misfits, oh well, his metal band is great. Anyway, the chorus is pretty nice though. Another nice sing-along part, with "Hallowee-ee-een." And that's basicly the song. What Misifts song is really longer than 3 minutes? Very few. But this isn't the 1:52 original. After the song has ended, there's some strange, haunting noises. I believe that it is a piano being tuned. Don't hold me to that, I just read it somewhere. I really love AFI, but this just annoys the hell out of me. Sure, it sounds cool, it just makes the song twice as long. 6/10
The Boy Who Destroyed The World - Then right after that ends, it gets back the power with a driving drum beat into the song, and then the bass and guitar follow. Another verse with some backing "oh-oh-oh's" and Davey singing. The chorus is yet again, a nice sing-along, with the backing vocals. After that, another verse and chorus, then the breakdown. There's an instrumental break and then Davey sings, and then the backing comes in a little bit later. Another chorus and end. After the end there's some rain sounds, but thankfully, they only last about 10 seconds. This song is also on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. You may have heard it from that. The second best song on the cd. 9/10
Totalimmortal - And of course, the all famous "Totalimmortal." If you're into AFI and haven't heard this song, you are most likely living under a rock. The Offspring have also covered this song for the Me, Myself and Irene soundtrack. I don't ever remember it being in the movie though. But it was actually through the cover version that I got into AFI in the first place. That was a few years ago. And I still love it. I'll probably listen to it once a week, at least. It starts out with one of the coolest, and funnest, guitar/bass riffs to play. Especially the bass, it took me forever to get it down. After the intro, it slows down to just drums and bass and Davey sings. His voice is quite wonderful on every song he does, but this one is just amazing. Halfway through the verse, the guitar comes in and it has this sharp, dark sounding riff. It's great. Then it slows for a part before the chorus, and then another sing-along type part, with the greatest "whoa's" I've ever heard. AFI does those quite well. Verse, chorus and then the bridge. This part is nice. Davey sings once through, and then the back up and another chorus, but this time it's different, the "whoa's" go straight through the chorus on the last time it's repeated. The others aren't sung the same way. The cover version has an extra chorus in it. One of the best songs I've ever heard. 10/10
Other things:
There isn't much to say else that I haven't. The artwork on the cd is of a scarecrow in a dark, cartoonish fashion. It has lyrics for every song except "Halloween." Because they didn't write it, duh. I give the cd a 3-4/5. It's pretty standard for AFI. The last two songs are great, and I'll play them till I die, but it just kind of weighted down by the first two. I'm kind of torn between ratings on it. Because I absolutely love two songs, but the other two are just okay, in my opinion. Even though I give it 3 or 4 out of 5, I would still recomend that people wanting to get into AFI, listen to this cd first. It's kind of the mid-point between all their old and new. So 3/5 or 4/5, take your pick.
