Review Summary: Showcasing some of his best vocal work to date, hardcore act "Bayonet" proves to be the perfect outlet for singer/lyricist Buddy Nielsen.
After continuing to improve his vocals with each Senses Fail record, singer Buddy Neilsen took it upon himself to form the hardcore band "Bayonet". With its relentless aggression and harsh vocals, the group seems to be the perfect fit for the NJ native. The other members carry their weight as well. With them all having experience in other bands, this debut sounds like a band who know exactly what they are doing.
The album contains similar lyrical themes as most Senses Fail records. Songs about Buddy's anger towards his father or his self doubt helps create a dark atmosphere in which Buddy can let out his angriest growls to date. 'Who's Gonna Want Me Now' shows a newfound confidence in his screaming as he doesn't seem to take a single breath throughout the frantic minute long track. However, it's in songs like 'Harsh' or 'New York Minute' where we truly hear his talent. In both these tracks he saves his most violent screams for the end of the songs, closing them in great fashion.
At only about eleven minutes in length, my only real complaint about this debut is it could have been longer. From the pounding drums that open the album to the final screams on the closing track, the album ends as abruptly as it begins, leaving the listener wanting more. Some of the tracks also sound a bit similar so a little more experimentation would have helped improve the longevity of the songs.
Fans of Senses Fail may be caught off guard with this release since Buddy has basically ditched the clean vocals for a more raw and heavy sound. However, This new direction is sure to bring in some new fans and anyone who enjoys his more aggressive songs will be pleasantly surprised. Thankfully, Nielsen once again proves he is a force to be reckoned with as Bayonet's debut is a short, but impressive hardcore/punk ep that's sure to please fans of the genre. Here's to hoping he continues to focus on this direction musically because there's a lot of potential to be found here.
