Review Summary: Raz is literally a genius when it comes to rapping. He can turn his thoughts into words in a very short amount of time. Raz can simply make a whole quality verse by simply choosing an interesting word and flowing around it. Raz is also very smart when it 2 of 2 thought this review was well written
Nowadays there are a lot of rappers that simply should not be in the game. Granted they do make club hits but do not convey a message and spit rhymes that a 15 year old kid could spit with a better flow and with a better rhyme scheme. This kid goes by the name Raz. He is actually quite the asshole when it comes to his opinion on main stream rappers in the game that really aren’t up to par with the rap game. This is why his first mixtape entitled “Raz Is An Asshole” is one of the best mixtapes ever recorded. He flows over different futuristic type beats. This kid is literally a lyrical prodigy with a flow that can only get better. This artist has been compared to the likes of Earl Sweatshirt, and one of the best rappers to ever walk the face of this earth, Eminem. This mixtape surely surpasses the teen works of any of the above artists.
Raz is a 15 year old rapper from Los Angeles. He sounds like a seasoned 10 year veteran in the rap game which is astonishing because he has only been rapping for about a year and a half. Raz uses metaphors that are simply mind boggling. While listening to each and every song on this mixtape I was forced to rewind the song to catch the metaphors. Raz is very wise beyond his years and it is proven in this mixtape numerous amounts of times. At the same time he relates to his generation in different songs. All in All he has amazing talent and is able to switch up his flows mid song or through a different song. He samples clips of the movie Pulp Fiction which was released in 1994 before he was born! Granted he was probably writing while in womb. He also based one of his best songs on the mixtape entitled “Mr. Orange” around the 1992 movie Reservoir Dogs. He also entertains his younger fans with funny samples from the movie Semi Pro found on the song Jive Turkey.
Raz is amazingly skilled when it comes to rapping. He can turn his thoughts into words in a very short amount of time. Raz can simply make a whole quality verse by simply choosing an interesting word and flowing around it. Raz is also very smart when it comes to his track placement on the mixtape. He saves his best song, “Mr. Orange” for last and starts off the tape with a very controversial track entitled “Asshole”. On the track “Asshole” he blatantly disses one of the more popular rappers out right now, Young Money Rapper, Lil Wayne by saying: “I’m not an asshole I just think Lil' Wayne ***in sucks/ A couple uppercuts roughly tough him up/ Bust him shut, shut him up till he screams, enough is enough/ Enough? I never heard of it. Is that what you said to Hip Hop before you murdered it?”
Regardless of whether or not you agree with what he is saying he certainly is forcing you to at least listen to the rest of the song or the whole tape. Raz is also very conscious of what a real rapper is. In the song asshole he states the truth when he says: “Now as soon as you use auto tune your career starts to bloom” Raz uses a very broad vocabulary and is quite witty at times. In songs like “Mr. Niceguys” he shows his inner 98 Eminem style with rhymes like: “I’m probably with your mom tryin sodomy in the Honda Odyssey” Raz really puts all of his feelings on the pad.
Raz is very opinionated on a lot of worldly topics. In the “F T C Song” he expresses his dislike for the pastor of the W.B.C. (Westborough Church) Fred Phelps. This is the group of Christians that protested at a seven year old’s funeral. Raz is obviously a very different rapper because; there are not five rappers in the game that would know who Fred Phelps or the WBC is and he is only a teenager. Obvious intelligence is shown within this mixtape. Raz also puts on his lupe fiasco hat and states his opinion on Obama, and gays and their rights. Once again I remind you, HE IS ONLY 15. I can't name 5 15 year olds who would have any opinions on any of these things. The way he is able to combine his talent plus personal opinions at such a young age id go out on a limb and called this kid a genius/prodigy.
Although the mixtape is lyrically better than a lot of mixtapes out there it has a few downfalls. One obvious one is the lack of a conveyed message through every song. He shines light on a message in every song but does not clearly stick to one topic. His hooks on songs like Jive Turkey lack originality but do what they got to do and get stuck in your head. Raz also fails to stay consistent with his flows at times. Some of his songs leave the listener wanting more because of the shortness of them. I feel like he may of become a bit a lazy on some of these songs for example the song "What You Ask From Us" is a decent song but it feels like he places it there as a filler song.
In conclusion “Raz Is An Asshole” is one of the best mixtapes ever released and he is only 15! Throughout the tape Raz proves why he is an asshole and states his opinion on anything and everything through clever metaphors and double meanings. Once Raz finds a flow that fits him he will grow to be one of the best rappers of his generation.
