Review Summary: With Get Better, Lemuria release a very pleasant pop-punk album.
Get Better is the first full-length release by pop-punk band Lemuria, and it combines quirky guitar work with elegant mostly female vocals in front of a simple, upbeat rhythm section.
Lemuria's sound features lightly distorted guitars playing mainly chords and simple riffs accompanied by an in front female voice that is sometimes backed by a soothing male voice, all on top of a really tight rhythm section. The rhythm section is very powerful, driving the band forward without ever looking back. The album starts off more laid back, and slowly picks up more steam, building up to very high energy songs such as "Dogs", which even features a short guitar solo. The album then begins to slow down, with the very calming "Hawaiian T-Shirt" to come soon.
Most of the songs are pretty short, and to the point. No real drawn out introductions here, and not a lot of repeated parts throughout one song, if any. With the album's longest song clocking in at just over 3 minutes, the songs fly by, and the album as a whole is rather short as well.
The lyrics to Get Better seem pretty standard, most of them seem to be about events in a romantic relationship, and how the relationship is developing, physically and/or emotionally. There is also a small commentary on religion, as seen in the song "Dogs":
"My secrets end up on oil canvases
In a gallery for everyone to judge
When I lost everything you offered Jesus
Didn't seem like a fair trade at all"
Normal style and approach for a pop-punk band for Lemuria, and the delivery of the lyrics is very nice and uplifting in a sort of way. The lead female singer has a very nice and soothing voice, which helps give the music an even more pop feel to it. She is then aided in some parts by a male member of the band, and they compliment each other pretty well.
Get Better solidifies itself as a worthwhile pop-punk album, full of catchy guitar lines, upbeat drumming and singing, and personal lyrics. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for some pop-punk that mainly focuses on a female singer. Get Better covers a decent range of intensity, so there is likely something to be found and enjoyed no matter what people happen to be looking for.
Some standout songs are definitely the opener, "Pants", and the very quick, intense "Dogs". Those two songs I feel capture the overall feel and vibe of the album very well, and they are the two I find myself listening to the most.
