Review Summary: yeah, Marya Roxx is her actual name.

When Marya Roxx left the Estonian rock group, Vanilla Ninja, it was no great loss. Looking back at it though, when one considers what musical atrocities Marya committed afterwards, the parting seems worthy of mourning. Although two of Vanilla Ninja’s band members made decent solo careers for themselves, Marya did the opposite and fell flat on her face. When Marya left the band, you would think her new found freedom would lead her to make something good, but such is not the case. Marya’s Payback Time is hit or miss and is only saved by a few good songs.

The girl always wanted to rock out, and that’s exactly the purpose of Payback Time. When on stage, she exerts the presence of a rocker without restraints, and riddled with angst. The music is similar to Halestorm with a mix of hard rock and metal that gives a nod to the ways of rock past. However, it turns out that the band nodded a bid too hard to the past and lost their head, ultimately making their band seem gimmicky. It isn’t the band’s fault, though, it is mostly Marya’s fault for ruining a perfectly fine if not average premise. Surprisingly, the band is actually pretty good during live performances where even the singer boosts her game – if only the band’s efficiency could be heard in the album.

When I say that Marya ruined the album, it is safe to say that she tried too hard to be a rocker. Contradictorily, she pulls off the rocking attitude and look extremely well, but there is still one thing that was left behind. In her effort to be a convincing rocker, she changed her voice in the album so as to sound more raspy and aggressive – it didn’t work. Instead, it sounds awful and childish, and is a pointless irritation which drags the album down to the depths of embarrassment. Knowing that she sings fine live only adds to the frustration, for why would she intentionally ruin her voice? Who knows.

Not too many to be honest. I'm lazy/forgetting, so I go to like 4-5 gigs a year only. I mean, if some big name comes to town I'll be there, but I don't listen to our local bands live that much.

So you don't often feel the need to go to live shows, I have the same problem.

After further analysis I have determined that the short length does not break down the quality of this review so I pos'd.

So you don't often feel the need to go to live shows, I have the same problem.
I'm just so damn lazy and it doesn't help that almost all my friends listen to different music, and that little percentage that does listen to the same kind, well, they're even lazier than me. So alas, the only one I can usually take with me is my gf...wait that's not alas that's awesome, but the point is I can't quite drag her to any show either. She needs melody in her metal, and if there's no melody, she doesn't like it.

Hi!

Im new here so I´ve found this review on google. And I think Marya Roxx isn´t bad. In my opinion It´s very good. I think the songs are played really well and I love her voice. I think she sing that really well. All 10 songs are special. I think in every song is diffrent to the other songs. Sadly there are only 10 songs on it so It´s a bit short. But I love to listen it. But that´s only my opinion. Everyone have diffrent taste. And I´ve saw her live and she´s very good on the stage. She sing live very well and rock the stage.

marya's new album "payback time" rocks big times!!!

in my opinion it is the best hardrock album of 2010 cause i liked all of the songs and not just a few like with other albums. then the production is amazingly good (what else would anybody expect from kevin shirley who also produced the likes of iron maiden, led zeppelin, rush, dream theater, etc.). marya's voice is excellent specially for her style of music (which i would call melodic hardrock with a touch of punk and metal) and her looks and her liveshows are fantasic too as i already experienced a few times.

but back to the album, sure some songs are stronger than others nevertheless there's not a single song that sounds weak or faint. the sound is powerful, her voice aggressive, the songwriting is almost perfect and i specially enjoyed the brilliant guitarwork of paul crook (meat loaf, anthrax, etc.)

some songs may sound a little similar specially when heard the first time but if you listen deeper it's easy to recognize each song and by the way it's also nice if they are all of the same style cause once you love that kind of music you will love the album from start to end - at least i haven't hear any other cd more often last year than the marya roxx album. many songs turned into real earcatchers and i personally favor the titletrack payback time, time to run and loverboy.

so everybody who likes female fronted melodic hardrock should check out this album and i'm sure he will be surprised how good it is :-)
